Subject: Life In Two Dimensions From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 29 Oct 04 - 10:23 PM In the thread about The English Beat, michaelr expressed surprise that I would be asking about the group. He took me as the gospel guy. That made me stop for a minute to wonder how two dimensional we all are in here. Yes, I do have a gospel quartet, and have talked about that fairly often. But, although I have a big collection of gospel music, more often than not I don't post in the gospel threads. That's because I am not a scholar (by design.) There are others in the Cat who are far more knowledgeable about gospel than I am. But, my involvement in gospel to any significant extent is relatively recent. If I had to list, in order of how often I listen to CDs, the music I listen to most regularly, it would probably be this: Jazz Rhythm and Blues Gospel Rock and Roll Soul Reggae and African Blues Country Folk and Folk rock "Oldies: Chamber music Depending on what is happening in my life, the order moves around a little from time to time, but jazz has most consistently been number one. While I love traditional folk music, I don't listen to it very often. When I do, 90% of the time, it's re-issues of recordings made in the twenties and thirties. I also love to play video games and for many years collected comic books. Makes me wonder what I'm missing in your third dimension... Jerry |

Subject: RE: Life In Two Dimensions From: Mudlark Date: 29 Oct 04 - 10:53 PM Video games! Now that is a dimension I would not have figured on, Jerry! It seems to me life on the web is sort of like knowing people at work, or at music sessions, or in a painting class. You may know some things about them that even close friends don't know, but this particular vein of friendship tends to run an inch wide and a mile deep. I know very well your love of jazz, your kindness and generosity, your song writing and performing talent, even your philosophical bent. But I never for a minute think I really "know" you as I would if we hung out in the 3D world. In some ways, the narrower focus here is a help. It's not always possible, for me anyway, living out in the boonies, to be able to strike up or join in a discussion on The Muse, say, or the origin of some folk song, with 3D friends. I like being able to know you, and how you think and feel, through your posts, even if only in 2 dimensions. Besides, this way every once in a while I get a surprise that makes me smile.
