Subject: RE: Gainsborough Folk Club Friday 12th Nov From: Michael B Date: 09 Nov 04 - 08:35 PM Rozza suggested I write to y'all....I'm Michael Bonner, and I'd be interested in talking with anybody who remembers the early days of the Gainsborough Folk Club, or as it was known then, the Bothy Folk Club. I'm talking 66-70. Michael Whyte and I started the club in the Horse and Jockey (while I was an apprentice at Marshalls) and he was about to go to Ireland to work in a cheese factory. We soon moved to the White Hart and Alex Campbell opened for us for 15 pounds! The Meggies used to come for beer money and I remember the front row was always filled with "bikers". So, please correspond if yous feel like it....I've been living in Minnesota USA for the past 21 years. Mike B |
Subject: RE: Gainsborough Folk Club Friday 12th Nov From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 10 Nov 04 - 12:24 AM Hi Mike, remember you well from our apprentice days at Marshalls (along with Nick Raven, Graham Cater, Dave Toward et al), and the early Bothy. Mike and Jack Whyte and I played in a local band in those days (pre-Canada and literary fame for Jack) and I went to school with Mike and worked with him (and his mate Philip Stevenson) making cheese at Saundby Dairy. I distinctly remember Nigel Denver at the first-ever Bothy at the Horse & Groom (or 'Oss and Doom as some used to call it!) - heard not long ago that Nigel's still around and was living in Lincoln - I'm 57, must make hime about 97! Those were the Halcyon Days for folk music in Gainsborough - everyone who was anyone played the Bothy, usually for sweetie-money and a space on someone's living-room floor to put their sleeping-bag. You may remember us talking at The Old Hall four or five years ago when you called in at the Gainsborough Folk Festival. If you find yourself here again, try to coincide with a folk-club night - we can always lend you a guitar! Cheers, John B. |

Subject: RE: Gainsborough Folk Club Friday 12th Nov From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 13 Nov 04 - 02:30 PM Told you they were excellent Villan - trust your Uncle Strollin' every time! Glad they went well and enjoyed by all - looking forward to hearing about them next time I see Sooz. The considerable financial gain from my R&R gig did soften the blow of missing Kathryn and Sean a little, but even belting out 'A-Wop-Bop-A-Loo-Mop' doesn't hold the same charm as hearing Kathryn sing 'Workington way, when lads left school' or 'It was always my opinion, it's my opinion still....'. See you all in two weeks. S:0) |
