I came across this term and it seems to be some kind of Scottish term for an undesireable person. What does it mean????

Neds are those little gangs of spotty youths who loiter on corners with the sole pupose of noising up whoever passes by, breaking empty bottles of whatever pocheen they've managed to procure and spitting on pavements. They usually wear hooded sweatshirts and are fluent in Anglo Saxon, Hope this helps.

It is supposed to go back to the 50s/60s when we had a rash of 'Teddy Boys', Ted/Edward/Ed/Ned, the expression has been around for a long time, but seems to be enjoying a new lease of life at the moment.

In some other parts of the UK, the more usual term is "chav", I believe.

Non Educated Delinquent Scum. Only, we're not allowed to say it any more, in case it offends the poor wee buggers. Also, there are different degrees of Nedness. There are the truly nasty specimens, the ones who randomly smash thing s and mug people. These ones don't grow out of it, the only reason most of them are young is that they tend to remove themselves from the gene pool before reaching maturity.

THen there are the ones who are just normal teenagers, but are poor enough to be termed Neds.

You see, I come from Glasgow and I am working class and I can speak dead broad Glaswegian when I want, and I can dress dead tough when I want and I have got big chunky highlights in my hair ( I am a burd ! )

You know what makes me not be a ned ? I got out . I live abroad , otherwise I would have been a ned ( or mother to a whole family of neds by now ).

Is akenaton about ? What do you think about neds ? You see I refuse to distance myself too much from them, because I narrowly escaped being one. And I think someone must be to blame for the fact that , say, 20% of the folk from my city are neds. Poor , not well educated folk that speak with an accent taht will not let them climb any social ladders, that's for sure.

Like with most things, I am going to blame Thatcher. But I know it's deeper than that. We are a city full of workers that have been exploited for centuries, and the result is the neds, that don't even realise they should have a bettre life.

Thatcher be buggered, why does everybody blame her for everything from the South Sea Bubble to the San Francisco earthquake. Neds were around long before her arrival on the scene, I remember the word being used in Hamilton in 1957, it was more specific in those days, whereas now it has become a generic term.

Flamin eck neddy yev'e jist taken in 75% o the population of Glasgow includin masel born an brought up on a hoosin estate. The difference is an attitude of mind a ned wants to grow intae a weehard man the rest are just chinas tryin tae mak it tae next week.

When i wis a bairn they used tae gaither on a grass square near our house before going across the fields tae fight. Unfortunately in those days we like everybody around us depenende on the public telephone (only posh fowk hid them) my mum and dad used tae walk right through the middle of them to phone the polis. Ahll say that fur them in those days a glasgow ned new his manners they aye held the door open fur ma mum.

Well funilly enuff me a huv just came doon the road last week an oot side the princess gairdind in buchanan street there wur sum neds oot palyin but no wan ae rum looked pure poor tae me all in there Burberry gear and all the best trainers an o that. See even noo the junkies that hing abbot ther huv goat oan tha gallus gear tae asking for muny and aw a rat.
