Subject: RE: Tech: folk trousers From: Mr Happy Date: 15 Nov 04 - 08:41 PM I was at barn dance Sat nite last- 3 chaps+ a little boy wearing kilt type skirts. 'Twas a cold nite & though I'd removed me long johns ready for dancing, I'd added extra outerwear to compensate which could be emoved without embarrassment + the Mr happy braces to keep my end up! The kilt wearers must've bin hardy souls [but it aas very sweaty dancing!] |

Subject: RE: Tech: folk trousers From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 15 Nov 04 - 08:51 PM "Folk trousers" - I ask you... So long as they keep you warm and have a few pockets, that's good enough, and always has been. As a song I've been trying to find for ages unsuccessfully goes "These are the Good Old Days". |

Subject: RE: Tech: folk trousers From: Mr Happy Date: 15 Nov 04 - 09:50 PM While getting ready for ceilidh- I tried on some trizers I'd worn about 2 yrs ago- didn;t fit! Why is it that when u hang up trizers & other togs in wardrobe for a while & don't wear 'em- why do they shrink?? Anyone a scientific explanation of this phenomenon? |

Subject: RE: Tech: folk trousers From: Blissfully Ignorant Date: 15 Nov 04 - 10:18 PM I get that too. I think there's Goblins in the closet who take in all the seams when you're not looking... |
Subject: RE: BS: folk trousers From: Rapparee Date: 15 Nov 04 - 10:59 PM Chaps. Batwing, shotgun, fringed, whatever. But good, solid leather chaps. Nothing else except maybe footwear of some kind. Be careful of stringed instruments, though. |
Subject: RE: BS: folk trousers From: LadyJean Date: 16 Nov 04 - 12:47 AM There's nothing I like better than a man in a kilt. But someone is making denim "utility kilts" now, with lots of pockets, and they look kind of silly, with the pockets bolted on. Just make sure your pants fit well, but not too well. I don't need to know your religion. |

Subject: RE: BS: folk trousers From: Gurney Date: 16 Nov 04 - 03:03 AM If this isn't a send-up, Guest, I'd be interested to know why you want to know. A dedicated follower of non-fashion? A dedicated follower of fashion who wants to know what NOT to wear? A trouser salesperson? |
Subject: RE: BS: folk trousers From: Davetnova Date: 16 Nov 04 - 03:21 AM I say folk trousers too. I prefer me kilt which is much warmer than people think. |
Subject: RE: BS: folk trousers From: Georgiansilver Date: 16 Nov 04 - 03:29 AM I would suggest you wear whichever type of trousers make you perform better..Oh...they don't!!! Well, just put on whichever ones come to hand then!!! Best wishes. |

Subject: RE: BS: folk trousers From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 16 Nov 04 - 08:33 AM I agree! Folk 'em! Why, just the other day, I saw a whole gaggle of trousers just trousing around like nobody was watching. And nobody was watching! You can ask him yourself. He was right there with me when it happened. 'Twas a disgusting sight. Folk 'em! |
Subject: RE: BS: folk trousers From: GUEST,Mingulay Date: 16 Nov 04 - 08:48 AM Whole bunches of razor creased military trousering rampaging about the place attacking innocent folk trousers just because they happen to have been made in Baghdad! I'm going to have them retuned to GADBAD. That'll stop 'em. That doesn't appear in the US - Iraqi phrasebook. Let my trousers free. |
Subject: RE: BS: folk trousers From: Rapparee Date: 16 Nov 04 - 08:52 AM Chaps! Beloved by both performers and groupies of both genders! And what better wear for singing such folk standards as "The Whistling Gypsy" or "Little Joe the Wrangler" or "Lord Randall" or even "Greensleeves"? |
Subject: RE: BS: folk trousers From: GUEST Date: 16 Nov 04 - 10:09 AM its my fault.. i confess.. i started this thread after 1 too many malt whiskies.. and lack of confidence in a new pair of blue cotton rugby/jogger tracksuit pants the mrs bought me in a sale.. Ok for home and decorating.. but not too certain if suitable stagewear...???? damn comfortable though.. with the expandable string tie waistline.. anyway I claim those leather cowboy 'chaps' as a suitable reward for not singing my favourite Roy Rogers songs in public.... so is it necessary to wear anything underneath them..??? |
Subject: RE: BS: folk trousers From: Mooh Date: 16 Nov 04 - 11:07 AM Jeans pour moi, but my shorts are some other cotton. Was thinking about cords, are they back in style (like I give a shit about style). I see a lot of ratty old track pants on folkies. What's in the good will bin these days? Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: BS: folk trousers From: Big Mick Date: 16 Nov 04 - 12:06 PM I wear them all, but not at once. In fact, just this past Saturday I wore a black kilt. Commando style, of course. But most of the time I wear jeans. And I agree about the silly looking utilikilts with pockets. If I wanted pockets, I would wear pants. I do wear the casual kilt made of "duck" material. I like them every bit as much as the wool. All the best, Mick |
Subject: RE: BS: folk trousers From: Rapparee Date: 16 Nov 04 - 12:11 PM Wear chaps and let your fly flee free! You can wear 'em with a kilt, you can wear 'em with a dress, you can wear 'em with jeans, you can wear 'em with a sporran, you can wear 'em "with" or "without." (By the way, they're pronounced "shaps" and not "chaps." Bet a lot of you folks didn't know that, did you?) |
Subject: RE: BS: folk trousers From: MBSLynne Date: 16 Nov 04 - 01:36 PM Well the last festival I went to I was wearing purple glittery jeans......... |
Subject: RE: BS: folk trousers From: Blissfully Ignorant Date: 16 Nov 04 - 03:11 PM Well, i've got purple trousers that aren't glittery, and glittery trousers that aren't purple...but i've never seen purple glittery trousers. Have you been breeding trousers? :0) |

Subject: RE: BS: folk trousers From: Blissfully Ignorant Date: 16 Nov 04 - 05:36 PM See if you do have a trouser farm, could you breed grown-up boring jeans with sparkly patchwork cartoon-covered kids jeans? I really want some, but they don't have them in my size...*sigh* |
Subject: RE: BS: folk trousers From: Joybell Date: 16 Nov 04 - 05:37 PM I like those jeans from the 60s, embroidered by - like Shel Silverstein's "freaky Old Lady, name'a Cocaine Katy", myself. True-Love wears blue-striped Big Smith overalls sometimes. I like them a lot too. Joy |

Subject: RE: BS: folk trousers From: Maryrrf Date: 17 Nov 04 - 10:45 AM Jeans, cords, casual pants/trousers are okay but I don't like rugby/jogger/tracksuit pants. Yes they are comfortable but I just don't think they are right for performing on stage. I would view them as loungewear or sportswear, which is really what they're made for. My personal preference is jeans or cords. This is a female perspective of what "folky" guys should wear. |
Subject: RE: BS: folk trousers From: Cluin Date: 17 Nov 04 - 06:29 PM I got your folk trousers, right here. Though I don't wear `em any more. Got tired of putting on a new patch every time they came out of the washer. Also, they're about 12 yrs old or more and they got a bit too tight to be singing in. Gone from a 32" to a 34" waist. Damn beer! |

Subject: RE: BS: folk trousers From: beetle cat Date: 18 Nov 04 - 12:24 AM Old Leather Breeches; shaggy, shaggy locks Old Leather Breeches; shaggy, shaggy locks With your old leather Breeches and your shaggy shaggy locks You are pulling down the pillars of the world, George Fox!!!!! ... "'The man with the leather breeches is come', it was said of Fox." - From the antagonistic chorus of that old Sydney Carter song. Quote of Carter, as well. then there is... a rather obscure verse of All For Me Grog; I've got me breeches, me nobby, nobby breeches I've got breeches a-seen a lot of rough weather For the pouch is near wore out and the seat's all flying about And me knees are looking out for better weather so, old nobby leather breeches it is. |

Subject: RE: BS: folk trousers From: Gurney Date: 18 Nov 04 - 02:10 AM Eschew bifurcation? That's A trouser. That would be a maxi-kilt, wouldn't it? |

Subject: RE: BS: folk trousers From: GUEST,Mingulay Date: 18 Nov 04 - 09:04 AM In the best thespian traditions underpants are unnecessary. One merely has to THINK underpants, the rest will follow. Exits stage left red faced and bare arsed. |

Subject: RE: BS: folk trousers From: Rapparee Date: 18 Nov 04 - 09:26 AM The name of the thread says it all: Folk trousers. Don't wear 'em. Wear whatever you want, but folk trousers! I'm going to be on TV this very afternoon, and I'll do just that! Gonna wear my chaps, and that's all I'm gonna wear. Oh, wait. I have to wear a tie. Oh well, no problem. I'm not all that sartorially inclined anyway. Chaps and a tie, chaps!!! Folk trousers! |
Subject: RE: BS: folk trousers From: Mooh Date: 18 Nov 04 - 09:45 AM Cluin...That picture brought back memories of high school for me. The only difference now is the SO won't let 'em get so far gone. Best part of jeans is the last wearable month or so. Mooh. |
Subject: RE: BS: folk trousers From: Cluin Date: 18 Nov 04 - 03:35 PM Agreed, Mooh. My GF wouldn't let me wear those jeans anymore around her either. She didn't much care for my habit of wearing two different shoes either (a white Reebok and a dark blue Nike, though I switched the laces for a nice Yin-Yang effect). She said it made me look homeless and reflected badly on her. |

Subject: RE: BS: folk trousers From: Ebbie Date: 18 Nov 04 - 09:13 PM Rapaire. Think. Chaps and and a tie? The mind reels. |

Subject: RE: BS: folk trousers From: Rapparee Date: 18 Nov 04 - 09:27 PM I was an immense hit. Highly popular with the viewers. Problem was, I was seated at a table, and during the show there must have been a ghost around because there were several incidents of table tipping even though all our hands were in plain view. |
