Subject: RE: Any Mudcatters in Dubai? From: Terry K Date: 11 Jan 05 - 02:23 PM My company is making me go there for a week this year. I guess if there isn't much local culture I'll have to make do with the champagne and lobsters. Ho hum. cheers, Terry |

Subject: RE: Any Mudcatters in Dubai? From: pavane Date: 12 Jan 05 - 03:00 AM What do you mean by 'local' culture? The population is (or was) about 80% Indian, 10% Western and 10% 'local' i.e. arab. We met very few 'locals' during our time there. I lived over 20 years ago, so my information is well out of date. I was a member of Dubai-Sharjah Morris - there is still a phone number for them on the web, but I don't know if they still actually exist. There were also some folk clubs, (The Diving club, and Wings) but again, my info would be rather out of date! Lobsters - yes. We used to have them at the Costay club, after Morris practice. That's probably gone as well! Given time, I MIGHT be able to track down one or two people who are still there. |

As for local culture ... tricky - you probably have to find the Bedouins. Even the Arab music I came across in the mainstream Emirates was imported from Lebanon, etc. Maybe it's something local people do among themselves but think would be boring for their western guests? |

Subject: RE: Any Mudcatters in Dubai? From: Splott Man Date: 31 Jan 05 - 08:30 AM Looks like we're taking our own music with us. Although I'll be there in a non-music capacity, but the KilBride Bros augmented by Dean Ryan on bass will be there at the same time (it's a Welsh cultural/marketing thing), and they're notorious session queens, so listen out for some wild fiddle music if you are in the Emirates around St David's day. There'll also be a harpist, but I don't know who yet. |
