Jan. 11, 2005 — Females among many insects and animals, including humans, enjoy receiving gifts during courtship, but a new study on flies reveals that males can woo their intendeds with worthless, fake love tokens, even if such cheating is otherwise undocumented for the species.

By the time the female fly realizes her lover is a cheapskate and beats him off with her wings, the male already has mated with her and leaves with his faux present to find another partner.

Marvellous what some people will do for a kick. Watching flies shagging must be nearly as interesting as watching paint dry.....
Or would it be anthropomorphising their motives and reactions that makes it exciting.

reminds me of the old joke...

...then there was the story about the heeseet flay and the sheeseet fly...
it seems the heeseet fly cannot tell the difference between a sheeseet fly and another heeseet fly...and the sheeeseet fly cannot tell the difference between a heeseet fly and another sheeseet fly!....which brings up the problem: if a heeseet fly cannot tell the difference from a sheeseet fly and another heeseet fly and a sheeseet fly cannot tell the difference between a heeseet fly and another sheeseet fly......where do they get the WEESEET flys????
