Date: 24 Mar 05 - 06:56 AM According to Entertainment Weekly, the top sketch of the 20 top sketches on Monty Python is --The Spanish Inquisition! -- No one expected that.... The Dead Parrot is, I think, number 4, which seems a bit low. I would have it as a tie for first. Two others missing in the top 20 are the Cheese buying scene, and my favourite, the race that includes untying the brassieres from the dummies. yours, Peter T. |

I believe it was performed on stage at Drury Lane Theatre, and was recorded as part of the LP "Monty Python live at Drury Lane". Likewise, the "Last Supper" sketch was banned by the BBC on religious grounds and never shown. It was performed as part of the Amnesty International benefit show, "Pleasure at Her Majesty's", and featured Jonathon Lynn as Michaelangelo and John Cleese as the Pope. The Pythons did indeed show some brilliant individual sketches, but in both the TV series and their films ("Monty Python and the Holy Grail", and "Life of Brian"), what made them immortally funny was the insane but coherent continuity between the sketches. ("Meaning of Life" perhaps pushed things artificially a little too far but the musical sketch "Every sperm is sacred" deserves a medal on its own.) |

From: Ragman Date: 01 Apr 05 - 09:57 AM I'm sure at one time there was a sketch with elements similar to the "No one expects the Spanish Inquisition" where a gang of bishops and priests burst in to a baptism in progress shouting "Don't baptize that ...". there is an explosion then the head 'bishop' states in a New York gangland accent "We was too late...". The thing that attracted me to it at the time was that is was preceeded by some wonderful cartoon titles, with dramatic music, very reminiscent of Danger Man, which was also cult tv at the time. One of the titles was a caption "CofE Enterprises Presents...". I have the feeling that this may have only been broadcast once and it offended the Church of England (CofE) so much that it was never shown again. Does anyone else remember this, or am have I dreamed it up? |

On many, many occasions one of them would create a sketch, another would suggest a change and another would add a bit. Or sometimes they would completely rework someone else's sketch. Or combine two sketches into something different. Or, or, or . . . . In addition to that, there are disputes over who wrote what. Some of the team remember things one way, others another. All in all, there aren't too many sketches which can be claimed with 100% certainty as being written by just one Python. |

About halfway through, suddenly on the screen are Cleese and Palin -- performing the Parrot Sketch! Live, unannounced, the crowd goes nuts!!! Only, it kinda went like this.... Mr. Praline: 'Ello, I wish to register a complaint. (The owner does not respond.) Mr. Praline: 'Ello, Miss? Owner: What do you mean "miss"? Mr. Praline: {pause} I'm sorry, I have a cold. I wish to make a complaint! Owner: We're closin' for lunch. Mr. Praline: Never mind that, my lad. I wish to complain about this parrot what I purchased not half an hour ago from this very boutique. Owner: Oh yes, the, uh, the Norwegian Blue...What's,uh...What's wrong with it? Mr. Praline: I'll tell you what's wrong with it, my lad. 'E's dead, that's what's wrong with it! Owner: Oh, all right then -- here you go! Mr. Praline: Oh, thank you very much. -- They then left the stage. The live audience was in shock, then realized that was it, and went completely ballistic with applause.
