To anyone interested,

The Millenium Ecosystem Assessment report has been launched today by Kofi Annan.

To quote from the BBC website:

The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment was drawn up by 1,300 researchers from 95 nations over a period of four years.

Further details here at the officalMillenium Assessment website.

It doesn't make for very encouraging reading.

Peace

moo

yes, I read the high points in today's paper. (on page 2!! not page 1!!)It's really nothing new, but maybe hearing from there will cause some notice....

it is sad, but many will never believe there's a problem until THEY are hungry or cold or can't find any expensive gas to buy.(or are besieged by those who have even less!)

The math doesn't lie, and the signs have been there for 40 years. No one can predict 'exactly' the order and timing of each crisis, but you younger folks ain't gonna like 'em...and I am SO sad to be leaving my son a world like this.

Millennium: derived from the two Latin words "mille" = "thousand" and "annus" = "year" ==> "Millennium" = "thousand years"

Therefore, the following must be true:

Millenium: derived from the two Latin words "mille" = "thousand" and "anus" = "rear body opening" ==> "Millenium" = "thousand assholes" ;-)

There are spelling errors which I really like! ;-)

As I like to say, one's mood about the future of the planet often depends on which person one meets at any given time -- if you meet a nice person, you think, oh well, humans aren't that bad, we'll figure it out; and then there are various GUESTS, and you think, what a stupid species, we will never get out of this.

yours,

Peter T.

George won't listen....he is almost emotionally and constitutionally unABLE to hear those arguments. He can't deal with anything that might threaten short-term Republican interests, and there is some evidence he doesn't believe that we'll be around long enough for it to matter, anyway.

We had a Sec. of the Interior, James Watt, awhile back, who was just as bad...he just didn't comprehend the issues, and he once was caught on an open microphone saying, "You know, we don't need to worry about the environment and all this, because the world's going to come to an end, and then there's going to be the return of Christ, and since the world's going to be destroyed anyway, we might as well just go ahead and let it be destroyed."

and under Richard Nixon, we had another Sec. of the Interior, Walter J. Hickel, who once disputed the need for population control by saying that there was plenty of room in this country, because he had just flown across it the other day and looked out and SEEN all the empty space.

When the Republicans put that kind of stewards in charge, there is a serious problem.
