I've been an appreciative and awed follower of Doc Watson's since I first saw him in the sixties.Last summer I was at an Irish festival near Boston,here in the States, and for the first time,heard/saw John Doyle playing some unbelievable tunes on his guitar.Recently,I've heard a bit more on a CD.My reaction to Doyle was about the same as my first reaction to Watson...STUNNED!Methinks I may have found a new "idol". Anyone else share this opinion??

Doyle's a great player, but I haven't seen anything from him that's as sublime as Doc Watson. But then, I haven't seen him in a while. I will see him again in April, so I'll take a close look!

I had the pleasure of seeing Doyle as the guitarist for Tim O'Brien's "Crossings" band. He's a terrific player.

The John Doyle stuff I'm familiar with is primarily in his role as an accompanist with Solas and Eileen Ivers. And he is a great one. He seems to bring everything up several notches with his rhythmic drive and dynamic sense. Some of the tune backup that he and Seamus Egan did in Solas is just phenomonal. Reminds me of Django comping behind Grappelli. Yeah, I guess I'm a fan. vl

John Doyle has influnced musicians with his fine voice and playing long before he landed in America. I have heard recordings of him in The Chanting House going back to the 1980's. He has a good grasp of the Irish language and is also a very generous person.

However... I saw video of John Doyle backing Linda Thompson on a recent tour, and thought it a terrible mismatch. Sure he does the bashing rhythm thing well, but her songs needed a more subtle approach.

I saw John Doyle perform for the first time today. We have an enlightened house concert host in the area, and she snags all kinds of wonderful performers you wouldn't expect to see in a town with 10,000 population.

John kind of apologetically says that since he's left-handed, he had to come up with all sorts of strange things. I think that left-handedness forced him to be so completely one with his instrument, that he can do amazingly creative things. Our local dobro/steel guitar genius (Pete Grant) performed the last few pieces with John, and they both had an exhilarating time. It was a pleasure to watch and hear them play together.

I've had the pleasure of hearing John Doyle on a couple of occasions in the last two years - accompanying Michael McGoldrick and John McCusker in concerts. A superb trio, helped along no end by Doyle's excellent playing.

Bang, wallop, thud with exactly zero connection to the music he's supposed to be accompanying. I've avoided going to a couple of concerts by players I would otherwise have wanted to hear because Doyle was going to be there fucking up the whole experience.

I saw Joan Baez a few years ago at Nottingham Victoria Concert Hall, when she had JD in her band. He was superb, as was Joan, of course. Nothing 'fucked up', just skilled, sympathetic musicianship which added hugely to the band's performance. A great evening.

Whilst I wouldn't slag off a fellow musician in public, I'm quite happy to give praise where I feel it's due; John Doyle is definitely my favourite guitarist playing Irish trad, particularly when it comes to accompaniment.

Pete Grant! I had the pleasure of seeing him play with some visiting Irish musicians (can't remember who) at maybe the Sebastopol Celtic Festival, some (can't remember when) years ago. He was great!

I think he is a lovely player

He is definitely rhythmic. I have an accompanying Irish trad music DVD from when he was quite young.

But I liked his Exiles Return album with Karan Casey which is a different side of him eg Exiles Return or Leezie Lindsay with Eddie Reader
