Ron, your search is over, someone told me my song was a discussion point on Mudcat website so I had to have a look!. I will try to post lyrics and chords on here when I have some time. The Storyteller is a song about the transmission of tales and wisdom from one generation to another through the spark they ignite in some, but not all, who hear them. I find it astonishingly appropriate that the internet should now be part of that process.
Rick

Just so I stop worrying, this not that wonderful song sang by Jim Mc Adams: "I am the Bard, the story teller".
I know it can't be, it would have been picked up already.

Subject: Lyr Add: THE STORYTELLER (Eric L West)
From: oldhippie
Date: 11 Nov 06 - 08:32 AM

Probably not the same song, but the only one I know with the title.

^^
The Storyteller - Eric L. West
(In Memory of Clyde Monk) (Titus 2:6-8 and Lev. 19:32)
(c) 1998 Eric L. West. All Rights Reserved. Used by permission.

Key of G
No Capo

He was only two months older than the state of Oklahoma,
But his face would show, he'd lived a lot more life.
He could sit and rock for hours, talkin' 'bout the weather,
Or one of many mem'ries of his wife.

And the storyteller knew a time, that I have never seen,
Two world wars, covered wagons and a clumsy Model T.
But if I can draw the wisdom from the life he shared with me,
Then someday down the road, a storyteller I might long to be.

He'd go on about his farmland, how high the corn must be now,
If we'd only get a rain next week or two.
But the stories he repeated, over and over,
Were about the many people that he knew.

And the storyteller knew of men that I have never seen,
The local hero, countless farmers, and his high school baseball team.
But if I can draw the wisdom from the life he shared with me,
Then someday down the road, a storyteller I might long to be.

He was just a simple farmer, who loved to tell his stories,
But I found in him a living testament.
To the value of a lifetime following a Savior,
Who promised us a life, more abundant.

And the storyteller knew a faith that I have never seen,
Trust in God, true contentment, and a soft humility.
But if I can draw the wisdom from the life he shared with me,
Then someday down the road, a storyteller I might long to be.

I am the storyteller
I am the dreamer of dreams
Of unknown lands the dweller,
Seeker, singer, and the song,
The turning, crystal road along,
The streamer of silver streams.

Sing with me, Tell the tale,
Call to me, Western gale,
Call down the years with your song.
Call down the years with your song.

Sorry Crowdercref those are not to words to the song that are required - nice sentiment though

Thanks for that, Clare.
BTW, are you the Clare who sings, very nicely, unaccompanied songs she's written herself? PM me if you wish.

Had an email from Rick this morning with the lyrics...enjoy!!

THE STORYTELLER
(Rick Huddleston) ©1989

The Storyteller sat by the dusty roadside
A thousand tales were shining in his black and laughing eyes
But no-one stops to hear 'cause they're too busy
They've got no room for stories in their lives
But he just sat there waiting for the ears he knew would listen
The eyes he knew would see and once more, deeply, see again
Because one in every million has a dragon slaying heart
And the love of life to tell the tales again

CHORUS
You should have heard the loving and the laughter
You should have seen the dragon slain
You should have heard these dream as they unfolded
The stories may not be this way again

One day a young man walked the dusty roadside
Weighed down by his labours and the shortness of his life
He heard a voice say, "Son, you are the sword that fought the dragon
And the prince who took the princess for his wife
The hero whose laughter turned the giant from his mountain
Whose sword has freed a thousand with a thousand more to find"
Each word shone like a candle in his darkness
Each line a lesson to his troubled mind

CHORUS

He stopped and laid his burden by the roadside
Looking deep into the storyteller's black and laughing eyes
Where he saw his mettle tested to the limit
Heard the old man's tales so wonderful and wise
Then he walked on down the road with so deep an understanding
That a life of labour earns a life of rest
And that not every sword that swings is someone's saviour
But what you be you must be at your best

The ages flew, the grey hairs grew, his labours left behind
He languished in the rest the old man said that he would find
He recalled the many stories that has made his mind so free
And told them to his children that they may live as he
And so it is the passing of the deepest understanding
Goes in stories told from age to worries youth
And so on throughout history's generations
While there's dragon-slayer hearts to hold the truth

CHORUS

Thanks a lot, Backwoodsman. We've been waiting for an answer since 2004 (in this thread and another). Can you give the proper spelling of Rick's surname? The thread title says "Hudleston" and you have "Huddleston." I think the spelling you give is more likely.

Hi Joe, it's Rick Huddleston - those lyrics and accreditation are a copy and paste straight from the Word file he sent me.

Rick's a very nice guy, and a prolific writer of superb songs. Along with his wife, he attends several of the folk-evenings and sessions that I go to, and he's entered songs a number of times in the BBC 'Write a Song for Lincolnshire' competition.

Thank you Backwoodsman, Annette and Rick, this is brilliant! I'll print a copy off and present it to Ron at Warwick. Not sure as to whether he's up to speed on this thread, but I am sure it will be a nice surprise for him. Thanks all.

Backwoodsman, I confess that I made some very slight adjustments to spellings on his lyrics. It's the editor in me I guess. Every time the word "whose" appears in the song, it was "who's" in the original. I agonized over that, but I just couldn't leave that unfixed.

Nice song there.

Here's some musical drift that this thread prompted. "The Storyteller " is the kind of name for a song which is hard to resist if you write songs, and here's another that I wrote a few years ago. (Not prompted by this thread, which I'd never seen, nor by coming across either of the songs that have turned up here or any others called that, just because I was prompted by the idea of that as a name for a song, and this is what turned up.) So I thought I'd put it in here:

       The Storyteller
There was a man told stories
To help us understand,
And he went by the name of Jesus
And he wandered round the land,
He had time for everybody,
But especially for the poor,
And he never turned his back upon
The ones who needed more,
And he healed the sick and wounded
Such wonders to behold
But the greatest wonder of them all
Were the stories that he told.
   And here's another story,
It's a story that is true,
   And the stories live forever,
   And the storyteller too.

Once a woman lost a silver coin
But she didn't sit and and weep,
She searched about to find it,
And she gave the house a sweep,
She rubbed it and she scrubbed it,
And she hunted round and round,
She turned the whole place upside down
Until the coin was found -
And when she found what she had lost,
Said Jesus, with a grin,
She said "Let's have a party
And invite the neighbours in."
   And here's another story,
He told for me and you
   And the stories live forever
   And the storyteller too.

There was a man, said Jesus,
And he was much the same,
He had a little flock of sheep,
He could call each one by name,
He built a little shelter to keep them safe and warm
And he lay across the door at night,
To guard them from all harm,
But one day one went missing,
And he left the rest behind,
He searched the hills all over,
Till the lost one he could find,
And when he found the one was lost,
Far from the beaten track,
He put it on his shoulders,
And he brought the wanderer back.
   And here's another story,
He told for me and you
   And the stories live forever,
   And the storyteller too.

Do you know what makes a neighbour,
Well, I'll tell you, Jesus said
A traveller met some robbers,
And they left him there for dead
And as he lay there bleeding
Some good folk came along.
And if you think they helped him,
Why then, you've got it wrong.
No, one by one they saw him there
The holy men and wise,
And they crossed the road to get away,
Passed on the other side.
But a stranger stopped, he bound his wounds
And carried him away,
And took him to a friendly inn,
And he paid for him to stay.
And who was then the neighbour?
Not the holy nor the wise,
The man who wasn't one of us,
The sort that we despise.
    And that's another story
He told for me and you
    And the stories live forever,
    And the storyteller too.

And there were many other stories,
That he told us, night and day,
And each one had a meaning,
To help us on the way,
And in the end they killed him,
The wealthy and the strong,
They hung him up upon a hill
And they thought they had him gone,
And they thought they had him silenced,
And his words would not live on,
But the story wasn't over,
And by God, but they were wrong
   And that's another story,
It's a story that is true
   And the stories live forever,
   And the storyteller too.

Joe, I hadn't had a chance to read through the lyrics when I posted them, I just copied and pasted them! I'm sure that no-one, least of all me, will be offended by your editorial efforts!
