I know there are dozens of versions of Gypsey Rover/Raggle Taggle Gypsies/Black Jack Davy etc., but does anyone have the words or know of a version where the gypsy is a woman, dressed as a man, who comes courting the lady?

I have tried searching all over the web, & have found reference to both a Canadian & American song, but no further details.

Bert Lloyd mentions this version, so I would think it must exist somewhere.

Quite a few versions, particularly in Canada and the USA, have acquired the title The Gypsy Daisy. I'm afraid it's just a mis-hearing of Gypsy Davey, though. The story is the same as usual, and there is no hint of cross-dressing or anything like that.

Beware of making assumptions based on song titles! Mind you, it's perfectly possible that someone has made a modern redaction of the kind you envisage. It might be interesting, if it exists, but it wouldn't be a "version" so much as a modern re-write with no basis in tradition.

Thanks guys, I thought when the person who told me about the version that it was probably a corruption of 'Davey', though I knew that if anyone could come up with a version, then it would appear through knowledgeable Mudcatters.

Or then again he may have been 'pulling the leg'!
