Subject: Lyr Add: DEAR MR. FORD (Kevin Blackmore)
From: GUEST,Dale
Date: 27 Apr 05 - 12:32 AM

I couldn't decide if we needed a thread about every kind of car or just one generic thread, but I figured since we've already got Edsels and Lincolns started, we'd surely have to go with at least a FORD thread, since that's the parent company. This first song is about a Ford Econoline Van that wouldn't go, done up in the unmatchable style of Buddy Wasisname And The Other Fellers.

DEAR MR. FORD
Kevin Blackmore, 1988
As recorded by Buddy Wasisname And The Other Fellers

Dear Mr. Ford, I dearly loved my van,
My '85 F-150 was a beauty . . . when it ran!
But it didn't run a long, long time,
So I buried it in the ground,
Sure it makes a little bit of smell,
But it never makes a sound!

Chorus
Cause things fell off and things let go!
And nuts loosened up and I was always being towed!
Things would seize and refuse to work.
And I always felt like a real jerk.
Out there on the road,
When my van wouldn't go,

So . . .
I got sick of draggin' it home
Wouldn't it rot your socks?
Just as I fixed one thing on, another thing fell off!
So I buried it in the ground,
With a four inch pipe up through 'er,
And now I got me an '85 F-150 Econoline sewer!

Chorus

So . . .
Dear Mr. Ford,
Got thinking the other day;
You know myself and the other fellers kind of liked the old interior
I guess we're willing to pay.
We're ordering a brand new van,
With them seats custom made,
I'm going to park it on top of the sewer pipe,
And that's where it's going to stay!

Final Chorus
Things won't fall off and won't let go!
Nuts won't loosen up, I won't need a tow!
Things won't seize or refuse to work!
Though I might look like a real jerk,
Every time I got to go!
But it will pleasure me to know,
That my outhouse will be . . . a Ford!

Subject: Lyr Add: FORD ECONOLINE (John Stewart??)
From: open mike
Date: 27 Apr 05 - 12:51 AM

nanci griffith has a great song about a ford econoline
which had Rosalie Sorrells in it and 5 kids..
it was written by John Stewart...

FORD ECONOLINE
(John Stewart, as sung by Nanci Griffith)

She drove west from Salt Lake City to the California coastline.
She hit the San Diego Freeway doing sixty miles an hour.
She had a husband on her bumper, she had five restless children.
And she was singing as sweet as a mockingbird in that Ford Econoline.

And she's the salt of the earth,
Straight from the bosom of the Mormon church,
      With a voice like wine,
Cruising along in that Ford Econoline.

Her husband was a gambler, he was a Salt Lake City rambler,
And he built a golden cage around his silver-throated wife.
So many nights he left her crying with his cheating and his lying,
But his big mistake was in buying her that Ford Econoline.

She's the salt of the earth,
Straight from the bosom of the Mormon church,
      With a voice like wine,
Cruising along in that Ford Econoline.

Instrumental.

She's the salt of the earth,
Straight from the bosom of the Mormon church,
      With a voice like wine,
Cruising along in that Ford Econoline.

Now she sings her songs around this country from Seattle to Montgomery,
Those kids are grown and that rounder knows you cannot cage your wife.
Along the back roads of our nation, she's become a living legend,
She drives a Coupe De Ville but her heart rides still in that Ford Econoline.

She drives a Coupe De Ville but her heart rides still in that Ford Econoline.

Written by John Stewart.
( Irving Music / Wing And Wheel Music.)
From "The MCA Years: A Retrospective", 1994, MCA
Note from Joe Offer: The Harry Fox Agency (songfile.com) says that Nanci Griffith wrote "Ford Econoline."

To give at least a little balance for the Econoline, here's Nanci Griffith's tribute to Rosalie Sorrels.

Ford Econoline
Nanci Griffith, 1987

She drove west from Salt Lake City to the California coastline
She hit the San Diego Freeway doing sixty miles an hour
She had a husband on her bumper
She had five restless children
She was singing sweet as a mockingbird in that Ford Econoline

Chorus
She's the salt of the earth
Straight from the bosom of the Mormon church
With a voice like wine
Cruising along in that Ford Econoline

Now her husband was a gambler, he was a Salt Lake City rambler
He built a golden cage around his silver-throated wife
Too many nights he left her crying with his cheating and his lying
But his big mistake was him buying her that Ford Econoline

Chorus twice

Now she sings her songs around this country
From Seattle to Montgomery
Those kids are grown and that rounder knows
You cannot cage your wife
Along the back roads of our nation, she's become a living legend
She drives a Coupe DeVille but her heart rides still
In that Ford Econoline
She drives a Coup DeVille but her heart rides still
In that Ford Econoline

Idle aside: this was from Nanci's first MCA album, Lone Star State Of Mind, 1987. It was my very first CD purchase, a couple of months before I even had a player. I had no faith in MCA's willingness to keep it in print long enough for me to get a player. I'm glad to say I was wrong on that count, as it is still available.

Well, there ya go, Open Mike. You know what they say about great minds. I thought it was by Nanci though. I saw the reference to Stewart, but didn't believe it. Looked for my CD, but couldn't find it. Found practically all I have by her BUT that one . . .

Subject: Lyr Add: HOT ROD RACE (George Wilson)
From: GUEST,Gene
Date: 27 Apr 05 - 02:04 AM

a favorite of mine from the early 50s

HOT ROD RACE
as written by George Wilson:

Now me and my wife and my brother Joe,
Took off in my Ford from San Pedro.
We hadn't much gas 'n' the tires was low,
But the doggone Ford could really go.

Now along about the middle of the night,
We were rippin' along like white folks might,
When a Mercury behind he blinked his lights,
And he honked his horn and he flew out o' sight.

We had twin pipes and a Columbia butt,
You people may think that I'm in a rut,
But to you folks who don't dig the jive,
That's two carburetors and an overdrive.

We made grease spots outta many good town,
And left the cops heads spinnin' round 'n' round.
They wouldn't chase, they'd run and hide,
But me and that Mercury stayed side by side.

Now we were Ford men and we likely knew,
That we would race until somethin' blew,
And we thought it over, ---
    Now, wouldn't you?

I looked down at my lovely bride,
Her face was blue, I thought she'd died.
We left streaks through towns about forty feet wide,
But me and that Mercury stayed side by side.

My brother was pale, he said he was sick,
He said he was just a nervous wreck.
But why should I worry, for what the heck,
Me and that Mercury was still neck-and-neck.

Now on through the deserts we did glide,
    A-flyin' low and a-flyin' wide,
Me an' that Mercury was a-takin' a ride,
And we stayed exactly side by side.

Now I looked in my mirror and I saw somethin' comin',
I thought it was a plane by the way it was a-runnin'.
It was a-hummin' along at a terrible pace,
And I knew right then it was the end of the race.

When it flew by us, I turned the other way,
The guy in the Mercury had nothin' to say,
For it was a kid, ---
    In a hopped up Model-A.

Subject: Lyr Add: THE LITTLE FORD RAMBLED RIGHT ALONG
From: GUEST,Dale
Date: 27 Apr 05 - 02:09 AM

Johnny Nord had quite a bit more luck with his Ford back in 1915. Pert' near indestructible, I'd say. No indication as to what make of limousine poor Henry Jones was driving. You can probably be safe in the assumption that it was NOT a Ford!

THE LITTLE FORD RAMBLED RIGHT ALONG
C. R. Foster & Byron Gay
Recorded by Billy Murray, 1915

VERSE 1: Now Henry Jones and a pretty little queen
Took a ride one day in his big limousine.
The car kicked up and the engine wouldn't crank.
There wasn't any gas in the gasoline tank.
Just about that time, along came Nord,
And he rambled right along in his little old Ford,
And he stole that queen, and his engine sang a song,
And his little old Ford just rambled right along.

CHORUS 1: And his little old Ford it rambled right along,
And the little old Ford it rambled right along.
The gas burned out in the big machine,
But the darned little Ford don't need gasoline.
The big limousine had to back down hill.
The blamed little Ford is going up still.
When she blows out a tire, just wrap it up with wire,
And the little Ford will ramble right along.

VERSE 2: Now they ran over glass and they ran over nails,
And they ran over pigs and puppy dogs' tails.
They spotted a cop and shot out of sight.
They rambled all day and they rambled all night.
They smashed up fences and telegraph poles.
They bumped into ditches and deep chuck holes.
They bumped into a preacher and the preacher took a ride,
And the Ford rambled on with Johnny and his bride.

CHORUS 2: And the little old Ford it rambled right along,
And the little old Ford it rambled right along,
He swung around the corner and he bumped into a mule,.
And the darned old jackass kicked like a fool.
He kicked and he kicked and he kicked the wheels,
But he had to quit kicking to save his heels.
When it runs out of dope, just fill it up with soap,
And the little Ford will ramble right along.

VERSE 3: You can smash the top and smash up the seat,
You can twist it out of shape 'til both ends meet.
Smash the body and rip out a gear,
Smack up the front and smash up the rear,
Smash up the fender and rip off the tires,
Smash up the lamps and cut out the wires,
Throw in the clutch and then forget the juice,
The little old Ford will go to beat the deuce.

CHORUS 3: And the little old Ford it rambled right along,
And the little old Ford rambled right along.
Now cut that out you naughty tease.
'Tis a left-hand drive and a right-hand squeeze.
Patch it up with a piece of string.
Spearmint gum or any old thing.
When the power gets sick, just hit it with a brick,
And the little Ford will ramble right along.

That last section is very reminiscent of what we said long years ago about the kid down the street. We always said his bike was held together with spit and string and chewing gum.

Subject: Lyr Add: RIDING IN THE COUNTRY (Kate Wolf)
From: Pauline L
Date: 27 Apr 05 - 03:30 AM

Here's one by Kate Wolf.

RIDING IN THE COUNTRY
(Kate Wolf)

Going riding in the country in a Model A ford
Past the cows and the chickens, through the fields of corn
Out across the flat lands and the rolling hills
Feel the summer sun shining, hear the motor purr.

CHORUS:
And I'm just sitting on the front seat with two friends of mine
Going to the country sure makes me feel fine.

Working in the country, cleaning up yards
With a model A truck you know it can't be hard
Folks smile and pass up, walking down the road
Going to the county dump with another load.

CHORUS

Hayfields are cut, harvest has begun
Riding through the orchards in the morning sun
Good times in the country, can't you smell the air
Apples and apricots and plums to spare.

Chorus

Down gentle roads with no white line
Like a pathway to another time
Old houses passing, frontyards of flowers
I could ride in the country for hours and hours.

Chorus

I have two comments. #1. I've had almost the same experience, including the part about the county dump, and felt the same way. #2. I thought I'd never know lyrics that weren't in DT.

Note from Joe Offer: these lyrics are an exact transcription of the lyrics in The Kate Wolf Songbook, page 14. Words and music by Kate Wolf, © Sundown Publishing, 1972

Subject: Lyr Add: ICEMAN (Bruce Springsteen)
From: Dave'sWife
Date: 27 Apr 05 - 03:56 AM

Only one line about a Ford in this song, and not a specific Ford.. but, a Ford nevertheless. What would a thread about car songs be without art least one Springsteen song?

This song dates from the period when Springsteen was in conflict with his former producer, Mike Appe, and was conrtactually unable to record. You can see him testing out lines that later made it into other songs asuch as the line 'I wanna go out tonight, I wanna find out what I got' which made it into 'Badlands' and onto the DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN LP. There's some nice imagery in there such as him and his girl trying to drive back to the Garden of Eden in 'this dirty ole Ford.'

Does it show much that I spent an awful lot of time in Jersey as a kid or that I married a guy from the Jersey Shore? (who is not Davetnova) Naaaaaaaaah!

ICEMAN
(Bruce Springsteen)

Sleepy town ain't got the guts to budge
Baby, this emptiness has already been judged
I wanna go out tonight, I wanna find out what I got

You're a strange part of me, you're a preacher's girl
And I don't want no piece of this mechanical world
Got my arms open wide and my blood is running hot

We'll take the midnight road right to the devil's door
And even the white angels of Eden with their flamin' swords
Won't be able to stop us from hitting town in this dirty old Ford

Well it don't take no nerve when you got nothing to guard
I got tombstones in my eyes and I'm running real hard
My baby was a lover and the world just blew her away

Once they tried to steal my heart, beat it right outta my head
But baby they didn't know that I was born dead
I am the iceman, fighting for the right to live
I say better than the glory roads of heaven better off riding
Hellbound in the dirt, better than the bright lines of the freeway
Better than the shadows of your daddy's church
Better than the waiting, baby better off is the search

Back in 97 we had a conversation that quickly got away from Ford Econoline without ever posting the lyrics. Interesting stuff though.

And there's the Lord Mr. Ford that Stewie linked to above, and one that's about the Battle of the Yellow Ford, but somehow I think that particular Ford can't be blamed on Mr. Henry.

Here's one no one mentioned written and recorded I believe in the 1930s----Title When you drove a buick a big yellow buick and I drove a litte red ford. Same tune as when you wore a tulip a big yellow tulip and I wore a big red rose. There was a big law suit over this song and if I remember correctly the person who wrote the ford song didn't have to pay because he changed all the words

I don't want to trivialize this excellent thread, but when we were singing with migrant farm-working families in the New York State orchards, some of the kids sang:

I'm a little piece of tin,
Nobody knows the shape I'm in.
Got four wheels and a runnin' board.
    I'm a Ford, Lord, I'm a Ford!
Honk, honk, rattle, rattle, rattle, crash, beep, beep.
Honk, honk, rattle, rattle, rattle, crash, beep, beep.
Honk, honk, rattle, rattle, rattle, crash, beep, beep.
Honk, honk, rattle, rattle, rattle, crash, beep, beep.

Then one of the mothers sang (same tune, slightly blues-ified):

I'm a little nut so brown
Lyin' on the cold, cold ground.
    Everybody steps on me;
That is why I'm cracked, you see.
Honk, honk, rattle, rattle, rattle, crash, beep, beep.
Honk, honk, rattle, rattle, rattle, crash, beep, beep.
Honk, honk, rattle, rattle, rattle, crash, beep, beep.
Honk, honk, rattle, rattle, rattle, crash, beep, beep.

Subject: Lyr Add: THE BALLAD OF THE LITTLE FORD LASER
From: JennyO
Date: 28 Apr 05 - 11:31 AM

Here's one from a local duo, Craig Dawson and Simone Olding, written allegedly by a character called Frank Sample, who looks remarkably like Mr Dawson!

THE BALLAD OF THE LITTLE FORD LASER
(Frank Sample)

When I was about 16
I had no idea I was so green
but somehow got involved with a girl.
Then one night beneath the stars
we were in the back of her new car
we thought perhaps we'd give it a whirl.
But there aint a lot that you can do
You can try and try until your
face turns blue -
there aint no room in the back
of a little Ford Laser.

And so a few months went by
we were doomed to fail
though we did try
It doesn't even matter how poorly
endowed you are.
So we split up went our separate ways
but you'll never guess within a few days
I met another girl who owned a
similar type of car.
And I never thought
in my wildest dreams
I'd stay a virgin throughout my teens
The greatest contraception
is a little Ford Laser.

I know what you're thinking
about this song
I didn't think - I had it all wrong
Just take out a blanket and head
for the nearest tree.
But there's one thing
you don't understand
A Ford Laser girl doesn't like the land
A prim and proper and fussy
little Missy is she.
And the front of the car is still too small
Just four cylinders and that's all
You slip and slide on the bonnet
of a little Ford Laser.

This anti-sex machine is carefully designed
by an engineer with the weirdest
sense of humour
With seats too small to steer
and no room in the rear
you wonder what's the use
of a little Ford Laser.

I can't work it out - I'll never know
why these women thrill me so
Is it their smile or that look
within their eyes?
That seems to suggest
they know a lot more
Than you or I could ever bargain for
When you jump in the car you'll
no doubt get a surprise
'cos you'll think you're bigger
than what you are
when you twist and strain inside the car
A modern day chastity belt
is a little Ford Laser.

Well now I'm older and married too
my days of matchbox cars are through
but I have to tell you 'bout the
woman who moved next door.
Well, it's not her hair or her pretty eyes
Its more to do with the car she drives
my heart skips a beat and my
jaw falls to the floor
I'm reminded of my misspent days
when we tried and tried a million ways
I'm a frustrated man with a passion
for a little Ford Laser.

2004 Frank Sample

This reminds me of a ditty I heard as a boy...

Farmer Brown sold his wheat the other day
Like a doggone fool threw his money all away
He went into town in an old buckboard
And he came back home in a little red Ford.

He got to the fence and he got to the gate
Kicked at the pedals and kicked at the brake
He cut all the wires and he cut off the top
But the little red Ford just would not stop.

He took out his knife and smiled so keen
Cut a hole in the tank let out the gasoline
Took out his gun filled the tires full of lead
But the little red Ford went chugging right ahead.

Out in the yard in a big mud hole he hit an old pig
You shoulda seen him roll
Out in the yard they landed in a heap in that big mud muddle
'Bout six foot deep.

That's all I can recall, anyone else know this one?

Digression:
New Mexico is 42% Hispanic.
"Mi lindo Nuevo Mexico" is the official bilingual State song. 1995, New Mexico State Statutes, Title 12, Article 3 Section 12-3-12, where the lyrics are also published.

In my childhood Cord would have been an implausibility, and anyway that's another thread ;-) ...

Incidentally, for me "There was a little Ford" was never a stand-alone, it always came as a trailer on "A Zulu King". Hmm. Don't recall if I've ever posted my childhood Zulu King (a check of the archives suggests not; I did once link to it but the page I linked to is no longer available...

A Zulu King
Source unknown*

Well, a Zulu king with a big nosering made love to a dusky mai-ai-aid,
And every night, by the pale moonlight, across the lake he stray-ay-ayed.
Well, a hug and a kiss from a Zulu miss in the shade of the old palm tree-ee-ees,
Each starlit night their troth they'd plight by whisp'ring words like the-e-ese:

"Barumph # # Barumph # # Barumph tiddle-ee-ah-dee-ay-ee-ay!
Barumph # # Barumph # # Barumph tiddle-ee-ah-dee-ay!
I'll build a bungalow big enough for two,
Big enough for two, my darling, big enough for two,
Walla walla walla,
Then when we're married how happy we'll be,
Underneath the gumdrop, underneath the gumdrop tree.
If you'll be M-I-N-E mine, I'll be T-H-I-N-E,
And I'll L-O-V-E love you all the T-I-M-E time.
You are the B-E-S-T best of all the R-E-S-T rest,
And I'll L-O-V-E love you all the T I M-E time,
Rack 'em up, stack 'em up any old time,
Match in the gastank, no Ford."
There was a little Ford, the cutest little Ford,
The cutest little Ford thatcha ever did see.
The Ford was on its wheels and the wheels were on the ground,
And the ground was in a street and the street was in a town,
And the wheels on the Ford went 'round 'round 'round 'til
... Match in the gas tank, NO FORD.

I learned this as a kid in the Seattle area in the 1960s. Or maybe we cobbled it together ourselves (it is after all a bit of a medley).

I see the DT does have a text for this, though a bit homogenized and without the Ford trailer. Most versions have "bamboo" rather than "gumdrop", and we knew and sang both when I was a kid. Oh, and of course I forgot to mention that the # # in my text stands for {KISS} {KISS} or "smack smack". Mudcat MIDIs also has three MIDIs that are quite similar to the way I sing the portions covered (the Ford trailer again is missing).

this is one i wrote some time ago, if it's any good please use it

Now young Ford walked to work each day
Said to him self must be an easier way.
So he got a cart and a bunch of string
Found a unit called an E..N.GINE.

Now that was back in nineteen ten
No breaks, no lights, no laws back then
But it had a horn, so folks would know
Get out the way, cause it a'int slow

He got an order for another one
Folks realized it was much more fun
He made them cheap, he made them strong
He made them go, they did no wrong.

The million mark he soon did meet
Mass production kept them real real cheap
No breaks, no lights, no laws around
But it had a horn, folks loved that sound.

That was back in twenty three
Now Fords are every where you see
But the good old Tee did fade away
Laws and rules finally came to stay.

And so the Tee became a toy
Comes out now, with so much joy
No breaks, no lights, but it has a horn
And from her,    the car was born.

HOPELESSLY MIDWESTERN
(Joel Mabus)

If you live life in the middle and not on the edge,
You're hopelessly Midwestern.
If a big weekend means cutting the hedge,
You're hopelessly Midwestern.
If you shop at Sears and drink a lot of iced tea,
Love to dance the Polka and watch TV.
Then the verdict is in and the jury agrees.
You're hopelessly Midwestern.

CHORUS:
Hopelessly Midwestern, corn-fed boys and girls.
Hopelessly Midwestern, square pegs in a big round world.
Well, you can go from sea to shining sea,
But right in the middle, that's the place for me.
And if you like it like that then you're a lot like me,
You're hopelessly Midwestern.

If you like all of your roads, narrow and straight,
You're hopelessly Midwestern.
And if you think sushi looks a lot like bait.
You're hopelessly Midwestern.
If you like your potatoes mashed and your chicken fried,
Your green beans boiled and your apples pied.
And you ain't trusted nothin' since Rock Hudson died.
You're hopelessly Midwestern.

If annual rainfall is a real hot topic,
You're hopelessly Midwestern.
And if the Pocono Mountains sounds kind of exotic,
You're hopelessly Midwestern.
If you like Gerald Ford just as much as Betty,
And a big old cornfield looks mighty pretty.
And you'd rather go to hell than to New York City.
You're hopelessly Midwestern.

Hey, you didn't say WHICH Fords...   :^)

That's legitimate, Sharon, same thing happened in the Lincolns thread. (And a similar thing happened earlier in this thread with the allusions to crossings of streams.) Speaking of which I see the movie of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy just opened, and one of the major characters (by the standards of majority that apply in this case) is an alien researcher named "Ford Prefect". I can't watch the trailer because I have to upgrade my MediaPlayer and I'm afraid the upgrade may leave it unable to read MIDIs (I've seen a couple of computers with upgraded MediaPlayers that did great on movies but couldn't play a simple melody). Anyhow, the movie's signature piece is a bunch of dolphins singing "So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish". I do plan to see the movie; whether before or after Madison I haven't decided yet. Do we have a thread about hydroplane songs? I knew a parody of the Titanic based on the sinking of the Miss Exide in the mid-60s, but I doubt if I can reconstruct it now.

Boy, that's nasty, SharonA. What made you post such an awful thing? We may have to report you to the decency squad. :-)

Anyway, back to Fords.

http://www.aaca.org/junior/cartunes/lady/external.htm

HENRY'S MADE A LADY OUT OF LIZZIE
Walter O'Keefe, 1928

Have you seen her, Ain't she great?
She's something you'll appreciate,
I'm sure you understand just what I mean,
Ev'ry body, Every where, is falling for her now,
I'm talking bout the new Ford and boy it's sure a wow!
When you see her, You'll agree,
She's just the one for you and me,
She's everything that any one could ask,
"Sit tin' pretty yes I am, With her I'm always found
You "ought ta" see her Chassis, it's sure the best a round.

Talk of this and talk of that,
Boys you must take off your hat,
HENRY'S MADE A LADY OUT OF LIZZIE!
Has she plenty, has she much?
Got the "tin" you love to touch,
HENRY'S MADE A LADY OUT OF LIZZIE!
They used to park her in a lot,
For that they charged two bits,
But now they charge you nothing,
And you park her at the Ritz.
She once had rattles in her wheel,
But now she's full of "sex appeal"
HENRY'S MADE A LADY OUT OF LIZZIE!

She's like all the other vamps,
Pretty shape and lovely lamps,
HENRY'S MADE A LADY OUT OF LIZZIE!
Since she's taken on some weight,
Honest, folks, she's looking great,
HENRY'S MADE A LADY OUT OF LIZZIE!
Her dashboard has a clock,
That's a hit with all the Scotch,
A Scotchman saw the clock,
And promptly stopped his watch.
You've all heard the Frenchman song,
Fifty million cant be wrong,
HENRY'S MADE A LADY OUT OF LIZZIE!

Just a girl who knows her stuff,
Plenty fast but never rough,
HENRY'S MADE A LADY OUT OF LIZZIE!
Always tidy, always clean,
Faithful as an old Marine,
HENRY'S MADE A LADY OUT OF LIZZIE!
She's not the kind who tries to get
Your money all at once,
She only wants ten dollars down,
The rest in fourteen months,
Good for sister, nice for ma,
Ev'rybody rides but Pa,
HENRY'S MADE A LADY OUT OF LIZZIE!

Ev'ry groom and blushing bride,
Now enjoy their buggy ride,
HENRY'S MADE A LADY OUT OF LIZZIE!
No one curses, no one swears,
Lizzie never needs repairs,
HENRY'S MADE A LADY OUT OF LIZZIE!
She used to kick and jump around,
On ev'ry trolley track,
But now she's very ladylike,
And never answers back.
She will surely catch your eye,
You know salesmen never lie,
HENRY'S MADE A LADY OUT OF LIZZIE!

No more chug chug chug chug -bang!
No more cuss words, no more slang,
HENRY'S MADE A LADY OUT OF LIZZIE!
Not the noisy flapper kind,
Simply quiet and refined,
HENRY'S MADE A LADY OUT OF LIZZIE!
They used to say "We own a car,
It looks like one I mean"
But now they say, "I'll have you know,
We own a Ford machine"'
No more playing Jack and Jill,
No more tumbling down the hill,
HENRY'S MADE A LADY OUT OF LIZZIE!

When she's coming down the street,
All the boys say "Ain't she sweet"?
HENRY'S MADE A LADY OUT OF LIZZIE!
Every man will go for her,
She's the kind that men prefer,
HENRY'S MADE A LADY OUT OF LIZZIE!
Why even Thomas Edison,
The wizard that he is,
Could not resist her charms,
And was the first to take out "Liz"
He said "She's Okay to me,
All she needs is company"
HENRY'S MADE A LADY OUT OF LIZZIE!

Haruo, it was with a LOT of misgivings that I updated to Media Player 10, and have had no problems AND have been happy with the resulting player improvements. I did do a lot of research before downloading, and virtually every place I checked gave 10 a good report.

Now, don't take this as an absolute endorsement. Anything a person does on the net is at their own risk, I think. Just because it does well for me doesn't mean it will necessarily do so for you.

We have one machine at work which absolutely will NOT play midis. We try to be careful, but those pesky imbedded midis will come on and instantly we get the fatal blue screen of death. Playing music files is a large part of what we do, but we certainly have to avoid midis on that particular machine.

A fairly ancient parody of the 23rd Psalm:

The ford is my motor I shall not want - another
It maketh me to lie down in wet places,
It despaireth my soul,
It leadeth me into deep waters,
It leadeth me into the paths of ridicule for its name's sake.
It prepareth a breakdown in the presence of mine enemies,
Yea though I run through the valleys, I am towed up the hills,
I fear much evil when it is with me,
It anointeth my face with oil,
Its rods and tappets discomfort me,
Surely to goodness the damn thing won't follow me all the days of my life,
Or I shall dwell in the house of the insane forever.

My Grandad & Daddy had an auto salvage just outside of Tulsa for many years, so there were always songs about cars-whether the words needed changing to make it happen or not. I do recall that my older cousins sang one about a Cord, but I can no longer recall the lyrics. Some of the old oilmen got $$ together & had some Cords made in Tulsa for a brief time.
My Daddy taught us kids a slightly different version based on local doings. During prohibition days, they did a "conversion job" under the back seat of a big black Ford for a local feller who was known in those parts for his ability to distill & quickly deliver. Sugar Loaf Hill was the place where John Frank originally got the clay for his "Frankoma Pottery." Miss Jackson was a lady who borrowed a lot of $$ from some oil men to start her ladies department store at which their wives & mistresses shopped. It is still there, & more hoity-toity than ever.
Daddy always sang:
"I got a hot rod Ford & a two dollar bill;
I know a spot over Sugar Loaf Hill;
thar's barley pop & the dancin's free;
put on yer Jackson duds & come along with me . .

Sean Gagnier (nee John Gonyea--died about two years ago) sang and I think wrote a song entitled "Out of Sight, Out of Mind." It was a hoot.

It was a spoof of C and W songs and Sean made it work. I don't recall much of it, but the chorus went

Out of sight, out of mind,
That's all I am to you,
Just your friend what can I do?
Out of sight, out of mind.

In one of the stanzas he said

Late at night when I close the light
I pray and ask the Lord
Why every car that passes by
Sounds just like your Ford.

Maybe one of the Quebec or Ontario 'catters could post the lyrics. Possibly Beer could see if anyone still in the Montreal scene remembers it (Penny possibly?).

I suppose if you could "take the Chevy to the levee" you could "take the Ford to the fjord."

I'm not sure what you do with the 1936 PACKARD DIETRICH DUAL WINDSHIELD PHAETON.

Hey, Deb! Now just HOW are people supposed to send them to you if you don't give them an address? :-) I figure there are about ~ ~ oh, maybe THREE people here who know you. The number might be higher, it depends on how many actually claim to know you.

OK, that's enough grief giving for now. Now about Bill Moser's Ford ~~ I have heard of it, but never actually have heard a recording. I know of at least two versions, one by Vernon Dalhart and one by George Tucker. I thought I might have it in an old song book, but couldn't find it. I'm thinking it might be by one of the Masseys or Carson Robison.

I do think I can help you out, but it might be the weekend before I can get at it. You've waited this long, so a few more days shouldn't hurt. If you don't hear from me by Monday, feel free to jog my memory.

My E-mail that I give out to just about anybody is dale8r@hotmail.com

Hey, it is good to hear from you, and now back to the Fords . . .

An old boy who used to sing in a pub in Kent, usedto sing a parody of "I'm forever blowing bubbles". I can only remember the following:

I'm forever having troubles
Ever since I bought a Ford.
.
.
.
Radiator's boiling over
Blowing bubbles in the air.

OLD BILL MOSER'S FORD
Vernon Dalhart

Sounds like this to me...

Old Bill Moser rode a horse
Till the old horse died one day,
And then he tried to buy a Ford
But the dough he could not pay.

So he went and shook the rent man off
And he made a payment down.
He was proud as a settin' hen
As he drove it 'round the town.

Old Bill Moser nursed his Ford
Like a baby two weeks old.
He even wrapped it up at night
For fear it might take cold.

And if you asked him for a ride,
He'd never take a chance.
Before you ever got aboard,
You'd have to dust your pants.

He started home from work one day
A-drivin' his Ford along,
Makin' fourteen miles an hour
With his engine singin' a song.

Zeke Masters' Ford came up,
And as he turned the curve,
He hit Bill Moser in the rear
And busted up his nerve.

It almost broke Bill Moser's heart
To see his Ford bent up.
He said the durn thing looked just like
The chain gang's drinkin' cup.

He turned and looked at Masters'
Face and the words came fast and hot.
I could repeat just what he said,
But I guess I better not.

And now Bill's workin' night and day
To pay the rent man off.
His Ford looks like the [can't make out]
And his engine's got a cough.

With an old flat tire and a bailin' wire
And a piece of hickory board,
That's all there is. There ain't no more
Of old Bill Moser's Ford.

"The Little Red Ford"
Once there was a little red Ford, the cutest little Ford you ever did see. The Ford was on its wheels and the wheels were on the Ford,.....

From: Re:Lyr Req: songs about Fords.
From: Huro
Date: 29 Aptil 05 -- 04:16 AM

My husband used to play his guitar and sing this to our children. They are now in their late 40s and everytime they visit and we go riding in the car, they try to sing this song. My husband added many things to this car i.e. little girl sitting on the seat -- hat on her head -- feather on her hat and so on back down to the "motor" in the car made the wheels go round. They would like to get a copy of the sheet music so their husbands and boys could play it on their guitar for their children and grandchildren.

Can you help me with this? Thanks a bunch

I'M AN OLD COWHAND

I'm an old cowhand from the Rio Grande
But my legs ain't bowed
And my cheeks ain't tanned
I'm a cowboy who never saw a cow
Never roped a steer cause I don't know how
And I sure ain't fixin' to start in now
Yippee iokiyay

I'm an old cowhand from the Rio Grande
And I learned to ride
Before I learned to stand
I'm a ridin' fool who is up to date
And I know every trail in the Lone Star State
Because I ride the range in my Ford V8
Yippy iokiyay

I'm an old cowhand from the Rio Grande
And I come to town
Just to hear the band
I know all the songs that the cowboys know
About the big corral where the doggies go
Because I learned them all on the radio
Yippy iokiyay

Track 3 from "REVIVAL" (Almo, AMSD-80006)

VERSE 1:
            D
I've got an old V - 8, from the year I was born
       G                     F          Em7
Don't look like much, just a flat black Ford
       D
But the engine's clean, I could paint her some day
    G                           F             Em7
But most of the time, I think I like her this way

CHORUS:
      G
Don't turn no heads, don't catch no eye
          D                               Bb   F Em7 D
I'm just a wind on the road, gonna pass you by

VERSE 2:
Well I used to talk tough, and I used to get loud
Want to paint my name, all over this town
But folks lined up, just to dog my day
Now if I stay quiet, they stay out of my way

(CHORUS)

VERSE 3:
I got a brand new plan, gonna help myself
'Cause it's the fat man's turn, gonna share the wealth
Put the money in the bag, and keep your hands in sight
Turn around, count to ten, I'll go back into the night

(CHORUS)

CODA:
Don't call for help, don't scream, don't cry
Just a wind on the road, gonna pass you by.

Song: The Storms of Life
Artist: Randy Travis

          D
There's a dirty piece of cardboard
    G
that reads Montgomery Ward
A                        D
taped across the window of my old Ford.
                                  G
A six-pack on the front seat and a box of chicken wings,
A                                                 D    D7
I'm dialin' 'cross the radio for a song that I can sing

G
I'd better change my wandrin ways,
D
I know I've seen my better days,
A                              D    D7
always gettin' high when I get low.
       G
Well, I left my soul out in the rain,
D
Lord, what a price I've had to pay.
A                                 D
The storms of life are washin' me away.

An old mail pouch, tobacco sign
fadin' on the barn,
bringin' back sweet memories of Mama's farm/
When love was just a country girl that lived on down the road.
Spoken: you know, she almost had me turned around,
but that was years ago.

I'd better change my wandrin ways,
I know I've seen my better days,
always gettin' high when I get low.
Well, I left my soul out in the rain,
Lord, what a price I've had to pay.
The storms of life are washin' me away.
Yeah, the storms of life are washin' me away.

Old buddy of mine--passed on now, named Sean Gagnier--used to sing the following when he was of a mind to. The song was entitled "Outta Sight, Outta Mind".

"And every night
I close the light then
I pray and ask the Lord,
Why every car
That passes by sounds
Just like your Ford.

Outta sight, outta mind
That's all I am to you
Just your friend what can I do
Outta sight, outta mind."

It was done to a C+W chording and rhythm with that 'play it backwards and the dog lives, wife comes home, pickup starts' sorta sound.

From: pdq
Date: 06 Nov 05 - 09:17 PM

John Hammond did the hell out of this one at Newport Folk...

"No Money Down" - Chuck Berry

As I was motivatin'
Back in town
I saw a Cadillac sign
Sayin' "No Money Down"
So I eased on my brakes
And I pulled in the drive
Gunned my motor twice
Then I walked inside
Dealer came to me
Said "Trade in you Ford
And I'll put you in a car
That'll eat up the road
Just tell me what you want
And then sign on that line
And I'll have it brought down to you
In a hour's time"
I'm gonna get me a car
And I'll be headed on down the road
Then I won't have to worry
About that broken - down, ragged Ford
"Well Mister I want a yellow convertible
Four - door de Ville
With a Continental spare
And a wide chrome wheel
I want power steering
And power brakes
I want a powerful motor
With a jet off - take
I want air condition
I want automatic heat
And I want a full Murphy bed
In my back seat
I want short - wave radio
I want TV and a phone
You know I gotta talk to my baby
When I'm ridin' alone"
Yes I'm gonna get that car
And I'm gonna head on down the road
Yeah, then I won't have to worry
About that broken - down, ragged Ford
"I want four carburetors
And two straight exhausts
I'm burnin' aviation fuel
No matter what that cost
I want railroad air horns
And a military spot
And I want a five - year guarantee
On everything I got
I want ten - dollar deductible
I want twenty dollar notes
I want thirty thousand liability"
That's all she wrote
I got me a car
And I'm headed on down the road
No money down
I don't have to worry
About that broken - down, ragged Ford

WE'll have fun, fun, fun
til daddy takes the T-Bird away..

but then, again, i have heard that
Henry Ford had some political views
that might be aligned with fascism..

i heard it form this song..by David Rovics,,
http://www.davidrovics.com/ he comments here:
"Henry Ford Was A Fascist In fact, he was a
proud fascist, along with what's his name,
GW's grandpa. History is not nearly as
clearcut as the victors would have us believe. "

any one have any further on this?

As to fascist connection, read this for starters.

From: leftydee
Date: 06 Nov 05 - 10:55 PM

Chuck Berry had a great Ford song called "Dear Dad".

The best I can remember it....

Dear Dad, don't get mad, what I'm asking for,
Is by the next semester can I get another car?
This one keeps a missin' on the wide open road,
I might as well be walkin' as to drive this old Ford

She just ain't got the appetite for gas somehow,
and Dad, I got four carberators hooked upon her now,
I tried to hook another see if it'd do a little good,
But there ain't no place to put it lest I perferate the hood

So Dad send the money, see what I can see
Try to find a Cadillac, a sixty-two or three
Something that won't worry us and keep me on the road
Sincerely Your Beloved Son, Henry Junior Ford

Played with a standard Berry blues pattern. There may be more lyrics but I don't recall. Hey..... it's from about 45 yrs ago, gimme a break!   Lefty

Tune: On the Road to Gundagai
Don't know the author

There's a T-Model Ford made of rubber tin and board
Upon the road to Gundagai.
The spark plugs are missin',the radiator's hissin'
And the oil tank's running dry.

There's water in the petrol, there's sand in the gears
And it hasn't seen a garage for over forty years
You oughta hear it roar when you shove it to the floor
Along the road to Gundagai.

Cheers, Joy

Chorus (after each verse):
There's benefit in the whiskey
It's good for you, that can't be denied
There's benefit in the whiskey
I'd take a drink of it cold

Did you hear around this area
Of the Ford that Lamond got
It'll stay where it's left
And won't move unless it's towed

That's a car that's dangerous
If it gives you a thump
Wherever it sets you down
You'll stay there, knocked out

If he goes to town with it
It'll lose steam by Black Brook
It won't make it up Dirty John's hill
It hasn't got the power

Donald Angus said to him
The man who checked it out
"The steering is all bent
Before it causes serious damage, get rid of it"

Now I'll finish this song for you
And hope you'll do me this favor
Don't tell this to Lamond
In case he gets upset with me

"Grandpa has a car, it is a Ford machine
His whiskers come in handy for straining gasoline"

this line comes from the song Grandpa's Whiskers..
and here is the chorus...
Oh they're always in the way, the cows chew them for hay,
they hide the dirt on Grandpa's shirt, they're always in the way.

There was a line about grandma chewing on his whiskers at night
and dreaming of shredded wheat...

now i can't seem to recall ano of the other verses...

does anyone else?

(and couldn't twin pipes mean dual exhaust pipes?)

"Gotta new car" by Troyce Key and J.J. Malone does have the line "...and when I say afford, I mean a Ford".

Subject: Lyr Add: TAKE IT EASY (Jackson Browne)
From: open mike
Date: 05 May 06 - 06:12 PM

i posted this right after my post #99
and it should have been #100, but did
not go thru..the Ford shows up in the third verse

TAKE IT EASY
(Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey)

Well I'm a-running down the road trying to loosen my load
I've got seven women on my mind
Four that want to own me, two that want to stone me
One says she's a friend of mine

Take it easy, take it easy
Don't let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy
Lighten up while you still can
Don't even try to understand
Just find a place to make your stand and take it easy

Well I'm a-standin' on the corner in Winslow, arizona
With such a fine sight to see
It's a girl, my lord, in a flatbed Ford
Slowin' down to take a look at me

Come on baby, don't say maybe
I've got to know if your sweet love is gonna save me
We may lose and we may win
But we will never be here again
Open up I'm climbin' in to take it easy

Well I'm a-running down the road trying to loosen my load
Got a world of trouble on my mind
Lookin' for a lover who won't blow my cover
She's just a little hard to find
Take it easy, take it easy
Don't let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy
Come on baby, don't say maybe
I've got to know if your sweet love is gonna save me

You know we got it easy
We oughta take it easy

I got a Taurus from my friend Animal X. Having been ticketed twice in 40 minutes for driving an uninspected vehicle, I decided it was high time I took the thing to the local garage. It was there that I discovered that, according to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, my Taurus is a Crown Victoria. It seems Animal X didn't know that her Crown Vic was also a Ford, so she got the wrong title. I now have both in my purse, and, as soon as Animal X feels up to dealing with bureauocracy, I will get things straightened out. But this may take a while. I suppose it serves me right for getting a car from someone named Animal X. If anyone wants to write a song about this, they are welcome to do so.

'Cause the Lord Himself
Owns a Chevrolet, etc.

A bit of useless trivia: The reason Ford painted his Model T cars black is because black dried quicker than any other color.

"Grandfather" by Chris Hennessy :

"You should see the old Ford Model T's on the street"

"Gaspereaux" sung by the Fiddeler's Sons:

"tried my hardest to impress her with my father's LTD"

"King of Saturday Night" - Charlie Taylor, mentions a Mercury

" '61 I built my masterpiece, a '50 Merc...."

There's a hymn, "God's Ford", from the Model T era. Haven't found the music yet. The words were in The Hymn maybe a year ago.

A parody of 'That Old Fashioned Mother of Mine' learned in Liverpool when I was at school.

Just an old fashioned Ford car with old fashioned seats,
And an old fashioned driver in front.
An old fashioned garage where in it does go
When the end of a long day has come.
Though it has no bright hubcaps or lights in the front
There is something that makes it divine,
For the angels above come and give a quick rub
To that old fashioned Ford car of mine.

Got a model T Ford,
A tank full of gas,
A mouth full of titty,
And a hand full of ass.

Ala boogy, that's all I crave.
