A friend of mine who's resident in Aberdeen is looking for a replacement string for his autoharp but is having problems finding a supplier. I know nothing about the instrument personally or where to buy bits for it but thought someone on here might know where he can get what he needs, either locally or through the net.

Thanks in advance

Chris

Here are some web sources.

If time is short, take the broken string to a local music shop and have them measure its diameter with a micrometer. Then buy a banjo, guitar or mandolin string with the same diameter. Autoharp strings are shorter than any other instrument (except a ukelele, maybe) so length won't be a problem. But, if it's a newer autoharp it will need a "ball end" string so be sure you get one of those. Older harps require a "loop end" string but you can convert a "ball end" to a "loop end" simply by carefully removing the ball.

For years now I have been making my own autoharp strings (not the wound ones). I have several coils of music wire and a digital caliper, for measuring the string guage. The exact diameter is not required, merely something close, but not larger, than the original. I remove the ball from the broken string and re-use it. I make a double loop in the end of the string, so as to wrap the ball twice, and then spin the ball while holding the string and free end with pliers, so as to twist them together for about an inch. This method works well for me.
