I have a notebook for work and I travel with it a lot.

If I use a broadband connection I generally get a pop up when I connnect asking me to choose which way I want classify where I am. Office, away, home etc.

I brought my pc home as we are on holiday and when I connected this morning I did not see the pop up and I am blocked from getting on line.

I am pretty sure that it is to do with that pop up box. I have looked in all the menus for Norton Internet Security and I cannot find where it is hidden so I can alter it.

Any ideas folks.

BTW I am using my desktop to get onto the net to write this, but I like to keep all my work stuff off my desktop.

It doesn't really sound like a Norton thing to me. It sounds more like you're not getting through to your ISP with a proper login.

The place where you ordinarily set up connections is in Start - Settings. If you are using WinXP there should be a "Network Connections" button there. With other Win OS you may have to go into control panel and double-click the network settings.

If your system is asking where (who?) you are, it suggests that maybe you've set up different "user profiles," and it may be that you need to "log in" as the user appropriate to the particular kind of connection you want(?) Since you don't actually have to set a password for a user, sometimes people don't realize they're working as "different persons."

If this is an "unusual" use for your machine, you may want to go to Start-Control Panel-User Accounts and create a new user, then run through the network setup while logged in as that user so that any changes in settings you make will apply only to that user and won't upset your customary setup(s). (Hardly anyone will know that you're "Mary Jane" instead of your normal persona.)

"Network Settings," and the new "Security Center" if you're using WinXP SP2, both in Control Panel, would be the places I'd look for connection problems ... I think ... once you've confirmed that Norton isn't doing something obvious.

Mostly, though, don't use Norton: it's a nasty piece of work.

Please don't abuse a music forum by asking for free technical support for antivirus software. Try a proper technical support forum if you have the balls for it. You'll need to describe your problem properly, though; which you haven't bothered to do here. If you're too lazy to do that, why the hell should anybody (apart from John, who can't resist it) bother to help you?

Guest. I am not abusing the forum. I asked here because there are helpfull people, unlike your anonymous self, who have might have had similar problems.

If you care to search on other tech problems you will see similar enquiries for tech support on software.

I have been trying other forums with no result, so a pre-judgement on what I have been doing implies that as well as being anonymous you are telepathic too.

From another "GUEST" who is a sorry piece of work. No name, just here to bitch and moan. Someone who can't resist opening a thread just to find an opportunity to complain.

If you can't understand that connectivity is a vital part of our ability to use Mudcat or any other online site, then you're short-sighted as well as intolerant. John may give 25 cents worth of advice when 15 cents was all that was needed, but I'll tell you, these are great threads to revisit when the problem that the extra material covers crops up.

Meanwhile, I agree with John. I doubt that Norton or Symantec is the problem. Once you find out how to set up this notebook on the network, you should be fine.

Thanks to you all, with the exception of the anonymous telepathic guest. *Thinks* I should have used Guests magic powers to see what was wrong.

I have cracked the problem now, as usual Norton's own website was not usefull so I tried uninstalling Norton which worked. Dont like doing that as it leaves you open.

I'm goig to try and find another package as I find Norton often gtes in the way.

Clinton is right..AVG is a very good AV system for free. It is doing **DAILY** updates right now, and I have had NO virus problems for 4 years.

I agree, AVG is good.

It was recommended to me when I was attending a local IT course run by the local education people(Vocational Education Committee) who had been recommended it to them by their expert advisor. If it's good enough for them, then so it is for me!



P.S. I had been using Norton but I noticed as soon as I switched over to AVG all sorts of viruses were starting to be alerted to me which didn't seem to have been picked up by Norton!

Another vote for AVG..

I struggled for over a year with all types of virus and pop-up problems on my home PC and Laptop - one on Millenium and one on XP. Eventually removed Norton AV from both machines, installed AVG re-installed Norton Firewall and all now works well, no viruses, easy to update AV and no bl...y pop ups !!   Totally agree with Hen Harrier, when I eventally gave up with NAV, AVG found over forty infected files on one machine and five on the other which Norton had missed completely.

I use the Google Toolbar to eliminate popups. They're not viruses to be blocked by Norton Anti-Virus, so if that's what you were using NAV for, you were mis-applying it. The Norton Personal Firewall has an ad blocker (it removes the on the page ads that are linked to the page when it is designed). Another way to eliminate some malicious software and ads is to set your browser to the security level that allows trusted sites through and blocks the shady ones.

I don't use Norton products but have just paid a quick visit to thier site and had a look through the user manual for Norton Personal Firewall which I believe is one of your programs and seems to be the most likely place within the suite for a possible cause of your problem. I've used the 2004 version of the manual.

It has a feature called "Network Detector" and has 4 preconfigured locations (Home, Office, Away and Default). Try looking there.

Maggie, I seem to remember hearing (here, I think) that the Google toolbar was full of spyware, adware, and the like. Anybody have any info on that?

I'm also wondering if JIK has any thoughts on Norton vs. AVG. I've been using Norton since the days when 256K was a lot of RAM, and it doesn't seem to cause me any problems. But I'm always willing to learn something new. Maybe when John finishes with his hogs he'll weigh in.

Well, Garg, I beg to disagree. I've found many valid solutions to computer problems here. That's what makes this, in my opinion, such an enjoyable community: lots of interesting people with a wealth of knowledge (and opinions, of course) about many subjects in addition to music. But, as my dad used to say, "That's why they make chocolate AND vanilla...and butter pecan."

Great motorcycle but fraught with problems - finicky at times but when it ran it ran BRILLIANTLY - sounds like the computer has inherited the same problem from the bike via the name :-D

I believe the warning you may be thinking about concerns a spoof website calling itself gookle.com, in the hopes of catching the unwary user and loading him/her with malware.

Google, as far as I know, is safe.

I got rid of Norton completely two years ago because my PC worked about as fast as cold molasses. I use AVG and free Zonealarm, and it works like lightning, and I have not had a virus, or a hacking incident since. AVG found thirty five viruses, missed by Norton, on my hard drive.

BTW, Don't be put off by anonymous guests, who try to set themselves up as moderators. I would suggest that their posts come much closer to abuse of the forum than yours.

I have to agree with several others that AVG is the way to go. I used to have Norton, but still managed to pick up a couple of viruses in spite of updates. Since I've had AVG (about a year) it has been problem free - just quietly goes about updating daily and doing its job. And it's free.

John in Kansas started a thread about Gookle.com and described the horrors of popup screens and trojan horrors that are loaded into your computer. Read that thread instead of trying to go there yourself to see what it's all about. Sounds nasty. Google Toolbar is a great device and offers lots of setting options. I've enjoyed using it.

How's the move to the mainland coming along?
