Subject: Song books for sale - values?? From: Hrothgar Date: 15 May 05 - 06:27 AM Kathy Arthur is selling the late Stan Arthur's collection of folk music books. Many of them are fairly run-of-the-mill, but there are some of special interest or rarity for which we want to establish realistic values. We don't want to go to the trouble of registering with eBay/Paypal etc. We have made a few enquiries through Amazon and a couple of other sites to try to find market prices. Does anybody want to suggest values for the following: Australian: Folk Songs of Australia; John Meredith, Hugh Anderson; hardcover, no DJ, Ure Smith 1968 reprint. Folk Songs of Australia Volume 2; John Meredith, Roger Covell, Patricia Brown; paperback; NSW Uni Press 1987. Farewell to Old England; Hugh Anderson; hardcover, with DJ; Rigby 1964. Subject: RE: Song books for sale From: rumanci Date: 15 May 05 - 10:28 AM Thanks Mariner It may be nit-picking of the semantics involved BUT I didn't actually mean to imply the Hugill book was unavailable to buy now in paperback form but unfortunately, there seems to be a definite NO for a future re-print. rum |

Subject: RE: Song books for sale From: Joe Offer Date: 15 May 05 - 12:53 PM I'd be interested, too - particularly The Wanton Seed (Frank Purslow), More Irish Street Ballads (Colm O'Lochlann), Folk Songs & Ballads of Lancashire. Heck, I'd take them all if the price were right.... That's a nice assortment of books, and there are very few that I have already. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Song books for sale From: open mike Date: 15 May 05 - 01:17 PM i second the recommendation for abe books.. (Advanced Book Exchange) you can finid what the going rate is for books there...the site is where many thousands of book dealers...8-10,000 i believe list most if not all of their books for sale, so you often get a good comparison of values, prices, condition, etc. good luck... it must be a sad chore to sell these books from a loved one...i wish her the best success. |

Subject: RE: Song books for sale From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 15 May 05 - 02:20 PM You'll have no trouble selling the O Lochlainn books (whether they're worth more, or less, because of the signatures is moot, perhaps), and most of the "Non Australian" list is well worth having; I can't speak for the Australian selection. Price, as you know, is largely down to condition and can vary widely. Bear in mind also that most dealers will have paid less than half the price they are asking, so you can afford to undercut if you wish. Certainly worth asking Dave Eyre for advice, as "rumanci" suggested. You can contact him via his website at http://www.collectorsfolk.co.uk/. It's very difficult to suggest sensible prices without knowing more precisely what the condition of each book is; what you'll mostly get here is people trying to bag them (I admit to being in the market for several myself). Registering with ebay isn't as daunting as it looks, and using PayPal makes accepting payments from other countries much simpler. |

Subject: RE: Song books for sale From: GUEST,Maggie Holland Date: 15 May 05 - 03:04 PM People reading this thread might be interested to know that there's a bookseller in south Edinburgh who is currently cataloguing and gradually selling the private book collection of the late Dr Hamish Henderson (School of Scottish studies, poet, songwriter....) I went round to have a look when it was still largely uncatalogued - an eclectic mix of song books, novels, poetry and political pamphlets. Hamish tended to write his name in the flyleaf of most of his books. They have a website at http://www.scottish-books-photos.co.uk/ and can be emailed at gordon.wright11@btopenworld.com for electronic copies of the book lists. Best wishes Maggie |

Subject: RE: Song books for sale From: Anglo Date: 15 May 05 - 05:20 PM I would put up a fight for hardcover copies of the O'Lochlainn, as a pair. If you can't stand the thought of eBay, there's always the Mudcat auction... though you'd probably do better on eBay. |
