I've seen a lot of references in Mudcat to Israel as an Apartheid country. So I did some research into Arabs in Israel and found out that:

-11 Israeli Arabs serve in the Knesset, the parliament of Israel. Two of them are members of Likud, the governing party of Ariel Sharon;

-one of the nine justices on the Israeli Supreme Court is Salim Joubran, an Arab;

-The Israeli government is currently implementing a 4-year, 4 billion shekel plan to develop infrastructures in the Arab sector;

-Israeli Arabs attend and lecture in every Israeli university. In fact, prominent Arab Israeli academics such as Sari Nusseibeh were outspoken against the recent boycott of Israeli universities by the UK's Association of University Teachers;

-While Israeli Arabs are not drafted into the army, many volunteer and serve with distinction;

-Arabs occupy posts of distinctionin Israel's diplomatic corps. For example, an Arab Israeli was consul general in Atlanta and another was ambassador to Finland;

- Israeli Arabs consistently state that they'd prefer to remain in Israel rather than join a future Palestinian state. A May 2001 survey found that just 30 percent of Israel's Arab population would agree to the Galilee Triangle being annexed to a future Palestinian state. By February 2004, according to the Haifa-based Arab Center for Applied Social Research, that figure had reached 90 percent preferring to remain in Israel.

I think that anyone who calls Israel an Apartheid country is either totally ignorant or a liar.

I think it's worth noting that there is a very big difference between calling Israel an apartheid country, and saying that the government of Israel practices apartheid in the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem. But I suspect that GUEST,Cunningham knows this, is maybe just having a slow day where he or she lives, and probably just wants to stir up some shit here in the Mudcat.

Obviously a stupid question, but how does one distinguish between an Israeli and an Arab?
Is it religion, place of birth, or is there some genetic difference?

I've often wondered this in the past.
Judging from the posts above, there seems to be a definite and presumably obvious distinction, so what am I missing?

In trying to find out the difference between Arabs and Jews I stumbled across "The Genetic Bonds Between Kurds and Jews"

this article says something similar, in more academic language

However this article argues that there is a close genetic affinity between Jews and Arabs.

I guess the differences are cultural, religious and political.

I am not sure that you have stated any particular truth, Cunningham--the fact that Arabs have important positions in Israel doesn't mean that aren't socially and culturally isolated. It doesn't mean that they are, either.

However, both the Muslims and the Jews of Middle Eastern background in Israel claim that they are discriminated against by the Jews of European background, who dominate. I don't know why anyone would be surprised by this--When cultures exist side by side, one tends to dominates, and the others tend to be subordinate--This human history--like it, or not--

I have not denied anything. There are some very good points made in the opening post to this thread. Plenty of other points could be made as well, but my main complaint about the opening post to this thread is the implied suggestion that all references to the word "apartheid" here in the Mudcat, in connection to the State of Israel, pertain to the part of Israel that does not include the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem.

That implied suggestion is, of course, libelous, designed to mislead, and is a use of the classic propaganist's tool of trying to discredit the people who have said that the government of Israel practices apartheid in the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem, with a lie.

But nice try Martoon/GUEST,Cunningham.
