Can anyone(eg Masato?) recommend a good recording of this? A friend needs to learn it.

Greg

I have a recording somewhere in my attic, on an LP I bought in a charity shop over twenty years ago - I think it was a Cathay Pacific Airline promotional record.

If you don't get any better suggestions, PM me and I'll see if I can dig it out and tape it for you. It should be good enough to learn from.

Jos

Greg,

How about these:

Music of Japan (koto emsemble) May be good for beginners.

Lullaby For The Moon : Japanese Music For Koto And Shakuhachi

Encantado por los Clasicos (for guitars)

Rita Streich: Folksongs & Lullabies Not recommended by me.

On the song, see Lyr Req: Sakura.

If it's the same tune...

The Mel Bay Book, Mastering the Guitar 1A (which has an accompanying cd), has a tune by that name in A minor. I know these sort of sources might be dumbed down a bit, but they're better than nothing.

Peace, Mooh.

I have a Japanese black enamel music box that plays this tune. I used to collect the boxes when I was a kid. I wonder if it still plays?

Thank you everyone for your kind assistance. We shall now be able to entertain our Japanese hosts when we visit in Sept. With plenty of time to get it perfect! LiBi.

Lovely tune! I worked it up on my Mountain Dulcimer. A real contest show-stopper. Complete with weird tuning, melody bounces from hi to lo strings, vibrato, hammer ons, pull offs, flat pickin, faynger pickin. Really fun, too.

Whoops! Uh, forgot to say that I rather enjoy the recording I have of Yo Yo Ma playing 'Sakura.'

It's also been used for two sets of classical guitar variations that I know of: Yuquijiro Yocoh's Theme And Variations on the Japanese folk song 'Sakura' (recorded by John Williams, among others) and Takashi Ogawa's Chorale, Variations and Fugue on 'Sakura'
