Subject: Review: Bruce Murdoch 'Done in 1980' From: Clinton Hammond Date: 01 Jul 05 - 02:13 PM Got this CD in the mail yesterday... For a transfer from old tape to CD, it's not half bad quality at all... Some few skips and 'buffering' issues, but I've heard a LOT worse done by WAY more knowledgeable people... As for the content! Yer jealous and you know it.. cause I have these 11 songs and YOU don't! :-P Bruce sounds really very late 70's folk-rocky, kinda Murray McLauchlan-esque sorta meets Bob Dylan in the most pleasing of ways! I found myself thinking back to when I was (well, I woulda been 10 in 1980...) young and my mom played all kinds of LPs (remember those?!?) all the time. Brucies CD woulda fit in nearly seamlessly... I mean, IF we'da had a CD player back then! Good job mate! Thanks for sharing this stuff with me! :-) |

Subject: RE: Review: Bruce Murdoch 'Done in 1980' From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 01 Jul 05 - 03:52 PM Here, here! A seamless album, very much a reflection of the times.. each song beautifully written. I too would like to hear what brucie's been up to all these years. Funny thing is, when I listen to recordings of myself 25 years ago, I sound pretty much the way I do. No discernible change to my ears. With brucie, that's good news. If he sounds today like he did in 1980, then he would be a real pleasure to hear. I just hope that bruce really wasn't "done" in 1980. We could use his music these days. Jerry |

Subject: RE: Review: Bruce Murdoch 'Done in 1980' From: Ebbie Date: 01 Jul 05 - 04:22 PM I got my copy a couple of days ago and I'm enjoying it hugely. I had forgotten how much I liked rockabilly. The songs themselves reveal a lot of pain (sorry, brucie) but also an exuberance that is catchy. His voice is flexible and resonant, with overtones of Roy Orbison. I have a number of favorites already, like 'Come Across to You'. Oh, yes, and I love 'Fool Like Me'. So far there's none that I DON'T like. I don't know who the backup band is, whether it's a studio band or someone with whom Bruce played but it's a good 'un. Bruce, put in NOW for vacation mid-October and come to the Getaway!!!!! OK? |

Subject: RE: Review: Bruce Murdoch 'Done in 1980' From: GUEST,ragdall Date: 02 Jul 05 - 02:18 AM Before I listened to the tape, last September, I had no idea what Bruce's music would sound like. I was amazed and thrilled to discover that Bruce's music is of the sort that I most enjoy listening to. Bruce is a very talented singer and songwriter. I eagerly await his next CD. I don't think anybody has mentioned "Maximelienne", yet? It so beautiful and calming? "Rough Night in Jericho" is a particular favourite, of mine, too, alanabit. As Ebbie said, " there's none that I DON'T like." I often find myself humming/singing a song from "Bruce Murdoch". Bruce, thank you for sharing your music with me. rags |

Subject: RE: Review: Bruce Murdoch 'Done in 1980' From: Amos Date: 03 Jul 05 - 04:46 PM There is no question this guy is a gem, and if the vagaries of fate had altered only a little he could well have been at the top of the Great Canadian Constellation, because he has style, energy, wit, musicality and is as genuine and as talented as any of 'em. I am delighted to have this CD and can't wait for his next one. Amos |

Subject: RE: Review: Bruce Murdoch 'Done in 1980' From: Mooh Date: 04 Jul 05 - 04:19 PM Got it just in time for the long weekend (Canada Day was Friday) and enjoyed it very much. Put me in mind of the David Bradstreet, Michael Lewis, and Valdy recordings (studio, and some live stuff from small "hometown" gigs) of the period. Now to get the lyrics and teach myself some songs! Bruce, thanks so much. Peace, Mooh. |

Subject: RE: Review: Bruce Murdoch 'Done in 1980' From: Peace Date: 05 Jul 05 - 07:37 PM My gawd, I thought I couldn't blush anymore. Thank you all for--well, thank you. OK, before this thread goes the way of the dodo, have I missed anyone? I am very disorganized, and I erased addresses after sending the envelopes. I have no addresses left. So I must be done, right? However, if I DID miss you, let me know PDQ and I'll get the rest gone this week. Bruce |
