I'm curious.Where is Doug?

Gas is out of sight, Karl Rove should be fired, Pat Robertson, a Christian, is advocating murder or kidnapping, and even the Bushites in Ohio are finally waking up.

You're right, kendall. Intellectualism and liberalism go hand-in-hand.

...and, of course, I learned from my Education professor (a good liberal) that IQ, as a measurement, is too culturally biased to be of real value when assessing actual intelligence.

The fellow with the highest IQ in my highschool is a street person today. Ditto my good friend's brother who has a PHD, as well as a masters in engineering, and is fluent if three languages.

I do find that liberals, as here with kendall, do assume more about conservatives than conservatives assume about liberals. The liberals I know do believe that they are more intelligent, where the conservatives I know merely assume that liberals are philosophically bent differently. The conservatives I know aren't nearly so dismissive of liberal's intelligence -- conservatives accept better that intelligent people can disagree. Liberals are more convinced of their superiority (as with kendall here).

I think that much of that can be attributed to the fact that, on the whole, conservatives are far more familiar with liberal ideology than liberals are with conservative ideology. If asked, a conservative can argue a liberal point of view FAR more convincingly than a liberal can argue a conservative point of view. When liberals here attempt to present a conservative's point of view (and they do with great regularity) -- it is usually unrecognizable as conservative ideology.

In fact, as a case in point (RE: the subject of liberals assuming the worst of conservative's intelligence), as long as DougR is the subject...

...I remember distinctly when the subject of something non-political came up here on the mudcat. DougR piped up with some very useful information that, in the giving, showed how intimately DougR was familiar with the subject, and how much he had involved himself with this subject. But the subject was one that liberals have long believed was THEIR domain. One of the liberals here actually expressed their shock the DougR knew anything about the subject.

I doubt that anyone here has taken more undeserved abuse that DougR. Through it all, DougR has remained a VERY good sport. I've always admired that in him.

I too admire and like Doug. He is a gentleman.
By the way, I did not say, nor did I imply that I am superior. Better re read my post.
Finally, I used to be a republican and a staunch conservative, so I CAN argue that point.
You are right about one thing, a high IQ does not mean success, because, in our society, success is measured by how much you own and how much you have in the bank. In America, the almighty dollar is king.
Motto of the republican party: "Pull up the ladder, I'M aboard."

Well, I have a few conservative friends whose intelligence I admire, but it is a different sort of intelligence than mine, such as it is. It is geared toward hard-nosed negotiation, investing and day-trading, and adventure trips to the tops of moutains in far coutnries...not exclusively, of course. But when it comes to politics, they retreat into mouthing condemnations such as "you just don't get it" and reciting ovaloids and such. (I just made that term up for pat phrases generated from around the Oval Office, sound bites used to govern the PR with.)

Actually I think the whole "left-right spectrum" of attitudes is entirely too 2-dimensional to be of much real use. This has been clearly demonstrated int he categorical confusiosn that have surrounded many issues of late -- the "left" and "right" have swapped attributes in some cases and individuals have found they are on both ends of the spectru, on different points. I don't think it is a really useful map of ideological territory, because there are so many other dimension involved.

Doug R is steadfast and I have always enjoyed our disagreements. Hope he's ok.

I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death my right to stop you saying it. Amos, I think you are getting a bit confused between 'left/right' and 'liberal/ authoritarian'.

To the left, the state's main role is to redistribute wealth so as to tend towards an egalitarian society, and that the individual has strong communal responsibilities. The right sees the state mainly as a defender of individual, especially property, rights. This combines with left/ right to form a matrix.

So you get:

Liberal rightwingers
Authoritarian rightwingers (conservatives in the USA)
Liberal leftwingers (I'm one, and I'm RIGHT)
Authoritarian leftwingers (Communists for example)

Most people fall somewhere on the page, you can probably plot where you'd like to be (not the middle, that's WRONG).

You also get liars and chancers who are mostly solipsistic authoritarians (Stalin and Kissinger for example), and as monsters can't be mapped onto the same world as the rest of us.

I don't doubt the intelligence of Kendall or Amos.   Both may be brilliant with high IQ's.

Research has shown over and over and over and over that the average intelligence of voters for republicans is higher than voters for democrats.   Indisputible evidence.

The argument that liberals are smarter than concervatives or that conservatives are smarter than liberals is stupid and arrogant.

Democrats have the top and bottom of the IQ range, Republicans the vast group in the middle. Super intellects such as Tom Lehrer and Isaak Asimov are quite liberal, but so are dolts like Natalie Maines and Steve Earl, who, on a bad day, drools on himself.

Ok, forget IQ. What it all boils down to as far as politics goes is simply this. We all vote with our wallets, and the republican party has never done squat for me. The Democrat party gave me Social security, the 40 hour week, overtime, child labor laws, Medicare and my wife's right to vote.

And, the republicans fought every one of those programs tooth and nail. Compassionate conservative...the ultimate oxymoron. Speaking of morons, that was a Bushism wasn't it?

Most of those threads were in reaction to an anti-conservative one of similar name. And I do not believe the "equally " guilty- as there are far fewer of us (here), we are less guilty! ( sarcasm)

Like me in 1945, you and your small, embattled group of faithful and true conservatives find yourselves unfairly outnumbered and attacked constantly by what amounts to a grand liberal alliance...composed of fuzzy thinkers, do-gooders, anti-business fanatics, anarchists, self-righteous and corrupt democrats, and outright hardcore communists!

My advice is: Go down fighting. History WILL exonerate you.

Well, if you're going to talk about per capita percentages, I think the people who don't call themselves "liberal" actually produce more stuff aimed at "liberals" here in the Mudcat than the other way around. But I am still willing to believe that both sides give as good as they get.

Way back when, you stated that Mudcat was 97% Liberal, 3% conservative.

Evidently , conservatives "give as good as they get", just not as often.

Post - Top - Home - Translate

Subject: RE: BS: Where's Doug?
From: CarolC

When did I do that, pdq? I'm having difficulty imagining myself trying to project percentages like that.

But I really am talking about individuals. There are some individuals from both sides of the spectrum who are equally guilty of the sort of thing they are both complaining about. And there are many on both sides who are not very guilty of it. If you go to internet fora where there are more people who don't self-describe as "liberals", you will see the inverse of what you see here, ie: there are more non "liberals" who engage in these behaviors than "liberals".

"Liberals" don't have a monopoly on these behaviors. It's just that each side tends to only notice it when the other side does it. Being not of either side, I tend to notice it when anyone does it.

I think Doug lives in the next county over from me in North Texas. If someone will PM his particulars I'll look him up and give him a call. It's so Effing hot down here right now he may be laying low somewhere, not wanting to heat up his house by running the computer. Or maybe he got smart and headed down to the coast to a nice beach or somewhere else cool.

Arguments between Republicans and Democrats are arguments between two varieties of what in other places would be called "conservatives" (not a term which I'd actually see appropriate, since both sides seem so wedded to the idea of change for its own sake). I suppose that's why it gets so heated, sibling rivalry.
...................................................

Doug generally stays polite and level-headed in a discussion, and that can be more important here than whether we get it right or not. People on both sides in the arguments that flare up here from time to time would be well advised to follow his example.

I have quite afew friends who are conservative thinkers.

I enjoy their company and discussing our differing views.

However I draw the line at people who support our military action in Iraq, I simply dont believe good people can really blind themselves to the murder of innocent children.

Would any of you treat a terrorist who deliberately killed civilians as a friend? The opinions that people hold are part of their personna and everyone is responsible for their own opinions.

Akenaton: "I simply don't believe good people can really blind themselves to the murder of innocent children."

Well, it's simple, Ake. Those good people simply focus on the innocent children who are dying at someone else's hands, that's all. That's the part they notice. So Doug notices the innocent kids who are killed by Muslim suicide attackers and such. If some kids are killed "accidentally" by American forces, then he figures it is the fault OF the Iraqi insurgents who caused the situation which required a legitimate American response. And so it goes... ;-)

Thus, it is not only easy for good people to support the US position in Iraq (which you and I hugely oppose). It's ridiculously easy! It just depends who you choose to blame for the general situation, that's all. Doug blames Saddam, his supporters, and Muslim terrorists in general.

So...Doug is a good person...who happens to see only the side of the coin that he is prepared to focus on. That's exactly how it is with most people. You can support a totally wrongful cause with all the good intentions in the World, and people do. They always have done so, since time immemorial.

Of course we all bear some collective resposibility for the bad things done in our name. Few of us lay down in front of the tanks, or refused to pay taxes.

we all buy in, we accept the good things our society provides us with.

I suppose in the end we have to hope that Mr Blair and Mr Bush are men of good faith, and that they have done what seemed the wisest course.

No doubt the many of the people who were incinerated in Hamburg and Dresden in WW2 were as innocent as the children who died in this latest conflict. its what happens in war.

The telephone rang and when I picked it up a voice said, "I'm calling Doug Richards, is he there?" I replied, "Speaking." The voice said, "This is Lonesome E. J. Were you DougR on the Mudcat?" I said, "Yep."

Then he told me about this thread.

Number 6 is right. I decided to take a break from the Mudcat. The reason:I thought the political postings, mainly, were becoming a bit more personal than they needed to be. Those postings about political figures or policies that I support is what I mean. I don't believe that I ever questioned the right of anyone to think differently from the way I do, nor do I think I implied that because they did not agree with my POV the were inferior to me or less intelligent. We just thought differently. I thought a bit of a break would be in order and although I have missed the Mudcat, and many of my friends here, I think it was a good decision.

I am most appreciative of the many complimentary remarks I have read in this thread. I apologize for not replying to PMs, but I never received them. If they are still available, I'll try to reply to them. I emailed Joe and Max before I left and told them what I planned to do. I just didn't want to leave the way Martin Gibson and several others did because their departure messages just provoked many insensitive (to me anyway)posts. I thought it best to just steal quietly into the night. I am grateful to Lonesome E. J., though for tracking me down, and Kendall, thanks for starting this thread. You are a good friend, though I have never met you. I saw a couple of threads that I was tempted to dive into but then decided...nah, I might get hooked again.

I will make a couple of comments, though, about questions posed to me in this thread. What did I think about Pat Roberson's suggestion? I thought is was stupid. I don't take the Pat Robertsons or Jerry Falwells very seriously politically.

PDQ: I was not a symphony director (conductor). I was CEO of the Phoenix Symphony for eleven years. I am not a musician, I just love music, and from time to time strum my guitar and sing for my own amazement.

Kendall: I know you profess to have been a conservative at one time. You could not have been a dedicated one otherwise, you would NEVER have gone wrong. :>)

Oops! I hope this posts as I didn't sign in as a guest.

I have some rather astonishing news.

I found Doug's address and phone number and called him. His wife answered and told me Doug had experienced an epiphany while listening to an NPR piece about underpriviledged Mongol tribesmen. He apparently contacted Habit for Humanity afterwards, and has taken a 6 month sabbatical to help erect Yurts for these nomadic peoples. She will try to have him contact us.

Arguing with ANY moron (or anyone period) does not normally accomplish anything. That doesn't mean people won't keep doing it. Their egos won't ALLOW them not to keep doing it. They have to assert themselves to satisfy the incessant demands of their raging little ego. That's why you keep coming back here too, Martin. And me too, of course. Only I know it.

Of course life away from here is better. Far better. The only reason I'm here tonight is...I came downstairs, with nothing much to do, everything else is done, and the computer said, "Turn me on and check Mudcat. Do it now."

Little bastard's got me in its control... ;-)

Hey...it's not as bad as being controlled by a fucking TV for several hours a night. At least I'm doing something here.

Look, man, I've been in places where I never looked at a TV or a computer for months at a time...because there wasn't one. By God, did I have a good time too. It was like being born into real life again. I hope I'm back there soon, but it's not easy escaping mainstream El Norte America when you have a business to run on a daily basis.

Doug never mind the bloody politics, just Google John Feeney Tenor and you will find a Site which includes his career in Ireland and the US, very detailed and do click on the reference to RTE with details of the programme.
