Subject: RE: Lyr Req: directions From: Wilderness Woman Date: 05 Sep 05 - 01:21 PM I need to introduce a song by George Fouke, "All of Us Are Members of the Family of Woman and Man" by George Fouke. It will be sung by the DC Labor Chorus at the Takoma Park Folk FEstival on 9/11/2005. Could any one give me any information about when, why or under what circumstances this song was written or sung? Thanks, W.W.

Subject: RE: The Family of Woman and Man (George Fouke) From: Joe Offer Date: 05 Sep 05 - 07:03 PM Here's an excerpt from the San Francisco Folk Music Club Folknik from March/April 2003:
Many in the folk community were saddened at the end of 2002 by the death of George Fouke, a local folksinger, songwriter and political activist since the 1940s. Among many other songs, George wrote The Family of Woman and Man, which has become the unofficial anthem of the Freedom Song Network, in which he was active. I didn't know George, but maybe some of our San Francisco people will be able to tell you more. I think Faith Petric recorded this song, and I know I've heard her sing it - the Freedom Song Network meets at her house, which is also the main gathering place of the San Francisco Folk Music Club. -Joe Offer- |
