Subject: Tannahill Weavers in concert From: Pauline L Date: 08 Oct 05 - 01:25 PM The Tannahill Weavers, one of my very favorite Scottish bands, is giving a concert in the Washington DC area on Oct. 10. They play such a variety of tunes, from the mystical Highlander's Celtic music to the rollicking, sometimes even brawling Lowlander's Anglo-Scots tunes, and everything in between. They play quite a variety of instuments: guitar, flute, bodhrán, whistles, bouzouki, keyboards, bass pedals, fiddle, cello, viola, Highland bagpipes, Scottish small pipes, and -- of course -- the human voice. I don't recall them playing a concert in this area, so this is a rare and wonderful opportunity. For details, look here. |

I still have my old club diary which shows account of their visit to Hexham folk club 'way back in the late sixties/early seventies. I'm curious to see how many names have changed---- |

Subject: RE: Tannahill Weavers in concert From: Pauline L Date: 11 Oct 05 - 06:50 PM I heard them last night and WOW!!! They are even better live than on CDs. High energy, great harmonies, wonderful songs and tunes. I spoke to one of their two pipers after the concert and asked him what key the Highland pipes are in. (He also play Scottish small pipes, which resemble Uillean pipes.) He confirmed what I thought I knew: B flat. I told him that their fiddler probably doesn't like that key. (I'm a fiddler and I don't like it.) He told me that their fiddler just tunes all his strings up a half tone, so GDAE becomes A flat/E flat/B flat/ F. Very clever. I spoke to people in the audience who had driven 100 miles or more to hear the concert. It was well worht it! |

Subject: RE: Tannahill Weavers in concert From: akenaton Date: 11 Oct 05 - 08:18 PM Never heard the boys live, but I've got most of their LPs and CDs. The original "Celtic thunder band" I preferred the line up with Alan MacLeod on pipes. "The merchants son/Dr Ross's 50th welcome the Argyllshire Gathering" is a classic, the pipe march fair stirs the blood ..Ake Glad you enjoyed the gig Pauline. |

Subject: RE: Tannahill Weavers in concert From: Pauline L Date: 12 Oct 05 - 11:13 PM One of their encore tunes was Atholl Highlanders. That would surely get people excited enough to march into battle. I've played it, too, and it's great fun. |

Subject: RE: Tannahill Weavers in concert From: Dita Date: 13 Oct 05 - 06:27 PM So many memories!!!! Conn on spoons, Mike on fiddle, Phil the roadie, Les as part of a duo. My band even covered (we called it sang in those days)a couple of Les's songs, one was "John can make the flowers grow." I bet I'm one of the few who remember them with a girl singer. Roy's Dad did not like it though "There shouldnae be ony lassies in the Tannies" John |
