Subject: RE: Post-Getaway Song Circle at SINSULL's From: Dani Date: 21 Oct 05 - 11:15 PM Having had the great good fortune to make it to July's song circle, I highly recommend it. Not that anyone asked, but I want to post the lyrics to the song I sang. Mostly 'cause it's the only one I ever wrote, and had to cadge the tune at that, but also because I didn't get a chance to sing it for Janie and Mick. The summer night seems so long ago already. It seems like a dream now, making that journey up there with Tinker, and walking in the door. How wonderful to have such warm friends in cold places! Understand that Kendall had no idea I was coming: I wanted to surprise him. But, he'd somehow got the word that Tinker would be there, and would perhaps have another Mudcat guest. His imagination, it seems, did not stray below the Mason-Dixon line. Dani (To Molly Malone) In South Portland city where the lobsters are pretty Our setting's the home of the lovely Sinsull She had wine and chili and cats that were silly She cried, come in and see Him Alive, alive-oh Alive, alive-oh Alive, alive-oh Crying come in and see Him Alive, alive-oh Despite Tinker's patience and calm navigation The journey was longer than either had hoped but through singing and chatting and general Mudcatting They had finally, Oh finally Arrived, arrived-oh Arrived, arrived-oh Arrived, arrived-oh They had finally, Oh finally Arrived, arrived-oh Sweet Kendall was quiet Not for this man a riot But wide-eyed and startled it's quite clear he had Expected a Big Mick But instead of the big man With Tinker is Dani Surprise, surprise-oh Surprise, surprise-oh Surprise, surprise-oh With Tinker is Dani Surprise, surprise-oh Big Mick would have been here But swinging in full gear With golden cape waving he's saving the world Squashing foes with his right hand Way down there in Maryland Crying take that, you bastards Organize, organize-oh! Organize, organize-oh! Organize, organize-oh! Crying take that, you bastards Organize, organize-oh! Left at home was poor Janie, who, equally zany, Would quite have fit into this glorious romp But next time she'll be here With a cold glass of near-beer 'Cause singing means feeling Alive, alive-oh Alive, alive-oh Alive, alive-oh 'Cause singing means feeling Alive, alive-oh From Jacqui a sweet kiss And warm fluffy soft gifts and laughter: who's dafter? Herself or The Sins? They're plotting and making and wise men are quaking Crying help us, and keep us Alive, alive-oh Alive, alive-oh Alive, alive-oh Crying help us, and keep us Alive, alive-oh To Max be the glory for starting this story with Greenhaus and others who gave us this gift Here's a glass we drink to you May all good be with you For keeping tradition Alive alive-oh Alive, alive-oh Alive, alive-oh For keeping tradition Alive, alive-oh Alive, alive-oh Alive, alive-oh For keeping tradition Alive, alive-oh |

Subject: RE: Post-Getaway Song Circle at SINSULL's From: jacqui.c Date: 23 Oct 05 - 12:08 AM There was plenty left, believe me. WE had a good turnout and it was still going when Kendall and I left at 11.30. Persons present :- SINSULL, catsPHiddle, Micca, Ranger1, Jenny (friend of R1), Curmudgeon, Col K, Alex (picked up at the Press Room by SINSULL yesterday) and wife, Giok, Deborah and Tom (our realtor and her lawyer husband, but both great people), Bat Goddess, Judy B, Charlie Noble, Kendall and me. Oh, and Seamus and Clancy and the cats. There was loads of good food, lots of good songs (Giok has a great voice) and presents and balloons for SINSULL's birthday (Monday). If Kendall hadn't been falling asleep in the chair we might have stayed longer but we were both tired. We're back there tomorrow for a lobster lunch so the beat goes on..... |

Subject: RE: Post-Getaway Song Circle at SINSULL's From: Jeri Date: 23 Oct 05 - 09:22 AM Is Alex the guy ColK met at the Press Room? It just dawned on me that my Beanie lobster is dead. I know he's dead because he's red and they only turn that color when you boil them. He doesn't move very much either. Maybe he's just permanently embarrassed. Oh well. Enjoy your crusty-rations. |

Subject: RE: Post-Getaway Song Circle at SINSULL's From: Charley Noble Date: 23 Oct 05 - 12:07 PM It was a really nice party with lots to eat and drink, and a whole lot of singing, at least six or so rounds with lush meaty choruses. Giok does have a good voice and plays guitar well, but it's his choice of songs that interested me, from traditional Scottish ballads to Woody Guthrie songs to Australian songs. And one never knows what Micca will turn up from his magic book. Sinsull and I are still presenting alternative versions of "Don't Go in the Lions' Cage" but we may ultimately achieve fusion. She knows even more of those songs than I do; I may have to dig deeper into my "reserves." We sang several John Warner creations including "Kitty Kane" and "Bunyip" which JudyB led, and my rendition of "Anderson's Coast." I was impressed that some of the UK folks appeared to be familar with Warner's work. Alex was certainly a fine addition to the party, a good singing voice and not at all intimidated by being surrounded by people he didn't know well. Where is he from? It was nice how one song led to another, a whole set of nautical songs including "Race of Long Ago," "Outward Bound," and "Lee Fore Brace" all composed by Cicely Fox Smith. And I can never get tired of hearing Linn's rendition of "Aunt Clara." I do have to rake through my collection and see what might appropriately follow. The best I could come up with this time was Rudy Vally's "Tattooed Lady," not "Lydia" but the one about her more conventional sister, a housewife who gets seduced by a villanous painter at the beach. Jacqui and Kendall did Utah's Phillip's song about the miners and their packets of morphine, a very haunting song that I'm still missing parts of the story. But Utah will be doing a concert in Maine, November 11, and maybe I'll get the rest of the story. I'm always delighted in hearing what Tom chooses to lead. He's another singer with incredible reserves which only are drawn upon in long singing sessions. Some day we'll hear the rest of "Andrew and His Cuttygun." And I wish that we had realized that this was also Sinsull's birthday. There are several potential gifts lurking in our basement locker that might have merited her attention, although nothing that would rival her new and glorious lamp! We do have a recording of about 4 hours of this evening, before the batteries gave out. We will entertain bids from those who would like the chip wiped or replicated as MP3 files. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Post-Getaway Song Circle at SINSULL's From: SINSULL Date: 23 Oct 05 - 08:03 PM Silence - pure gold. The cats and Seamus are sound asleep. Colin and Giok are off pub crawling with Tami. Most of the Song Circle and Lobster Boil debris has been dealt with and I can relax and enjoy remembering last night. The high point for me was when deborah, a Maine friend, decided to sing after swearing she couldn't. She was teary afterwards. Another convert, I think. Kendall was in rare form. He sang and played and made dry comments. Just like old times. Giok has an amazing variety of songs and is talented - an honor to have him here. Khatts and Micca were Khatts and Micca. IThey are on their way to Nottingham and I miss them. Jacqui did Lonesome Robin for me. Beautiful. There was much more... Now, what do I do with 30 lbs of cake, ice cream, cookies, and sweets? |
