I recognize all the examples on this page from a book of the 100 worst album covers that I picked up this summer in the sales bin at Coles. Couldn't pass it up.

We've all seen a lot of bad cover art over the years.

What's your favourite "what were they thinking?" example?

What I can't believe is how some of those covers show some actual time and work put into them, as far as band logos, etc. Like the one above of the Manson family. Somebody actually worked a bit on that title. Then they stuck that cheap freaky photo under it.

Now there was some group called CC Music Factory that had an album a few years back and you can find in every hock shop and delete bin in North America. It must have been terrible. The cover art certainly was! I have looked on the Net for it, but haven't found it or I would post the link.

Cluin - Thanks for the tacky C & C Music Factory cover, but that's not the one. It's bad, but it's not the one. The one I was referring to has a cover that's mostly in an unpleasant shade of turquoise green and has 2 inane looking dancers standing around in supposedly "funky" dance poses, one male, one female, both black. It must be a seriously bad album, and they must have made millions of them, because it can be found in every used CD bin in Ontario, and I don't know anyone who admits to owning a copy. Of course, I don't live around the Jane & Finch area in Toronto, so maybe that's why.

He lives in Orillia, Ontario, and has played for years off and on in our songcircle, and he usually does the sound (quite well) for the Orillia Folk Society. His name is Dave McMillan. Nice guy. He's still sort of recognizable...being the guy on the right, as you look at the picture...or the guy on the left if you're him in the picture. The Fernwood Trio's name was probably inspired by Fern Resort, a large vacation establishment on one of the lakes here. They used to play it frequently back in the 60's.

And ya know what? He said that act got him a lot of good luck with the girls back then. Yesiree. They were the cool of cool. They were mega-cool. Well...until Dylan came along, anyway.

I was just about to point out that you had neglected the Great Shatner's album art, Cluin, but you have redeemed yourself. And it doesn't end there! I have an incredibly rare Ktel double album of Shatner that HAS to be heard. I'll play it for people on special request, but only for big bucks or certain other inducements...in some cases...

One person offered me a mint condition Martin M-38 Grand Orchestra guitar for that album. No way. This kind of thing is simply priceless.

Actually I kinda like that "Has Been" cover. Very stark, yet overdramatic, like the man himself. Nice design.

In the other one, with Shat holding the guitar, if you look at a blow-up of it, he's not actually fingering any known chord. He's even stopped the same string twice, 3 frets apart. Looks like he doesn't know when to quit there, either.

Thomas Wolfe would have appreciated the nude-on-the-fridge. He wrote all his novels using the top of his fridge as a desk. (Threw the finished pages into an orange crate and carted it to his editor when it was full.) On the other hand, maybe Wolfe would have told her to get the #$%%^&$ off of his desk.

I think "The Minstrel Show" cover might be for real for real. The San Francisco Mime Troupe did a very controversial musical by that name during the sixties. The actors were all in black face. It was a very politically incorrect riff on racism, and it rattled a lot of peoples' chains.

Thanks, Cluin. you made my day. But the "Spaghetti Sauce" one is actually a parody, the original being "Whipped Cream and Other Delights" by Herb Alpert. It featured a woman in the same pose, in a mountain of whipped cream, and as a parody, that's not a bad cover.

At this time of year it just has to be Mario Lanza's Xmas Hymns & Carols album, which exists in various versions, the most common of which seems to be THIS. Generally you can pick up copies of this in your local charity shop in the 50p vinyl bin. Don't let the cover put you off though, for this is a top piece of work - & worth it for the version of We Three Kings alone, which is damn near definitive!

Alas not, Ed - it's the real McCoy. Word is Wor Johnny will pay good money for every copy destroyed. More alarmingly, it seems it was recorded in 1979. Bang on the nail there, Johnny!

I know what you mean. Had a bandmate going on about his idea for our next album cover (which I'll spare you). I'll have to dig up my copy of the book to show him next reheasal. His idea is certainly a candidate if we let him run with it.
