Subject: BS: Bad Cover Art From: Cluin Date: 04 Nov 05 - 08:20 PM I recognize all the examples on this page from a book of the 100 worst album covers that I picked up this summer in the sales bin at Coles. Couldn't pass it up. We've all seen a lot of bad cover art over the years. What's your favourite "what were they thinking?" example? |

Subject: RE: BS: Bad Album Cover Art From: Cluin Date: 04 Nov 05 - 09:33 PM What I can't believe is how some of those covers show some actual time and work put into them, as far as band logos, etc. Like the one above of the Manson family. Somebody actually worked a bit on that title. Then they stuck that cheap freaky photo under it. |

The cover art certainly was! I have looked on the Net for it, but haven't found it or I would post the link. Clinton, you naughty lad! How do you know what "bukakke" means? I am shocked! |

By 1970, Attila, of which he was a member, released their first album. Attila were not successful, and Joel spent some time in a mental hospital, recovering from depression. Despite this, in 1973, Joel released his first solo record, 'Cole Spring Harbor', followed by 'Piano Man', which received significant critical acclaim.... And now, from the vaults... Atilla! Yep, that's BJ on the right. Looks like the photo shoot was done in a meat-packing facility on coffee break. Check out the meat on Billy! |

Subject: RE: BS: Bad Album Cover Art From: Little Hawk Date: 08 Nov 05 - 02:10 PM Cluin - Thanks for the tacky C & C Music Factory cover, but that's not the one. It's bad, but it's not the one. The one I was referring to has a cover that's mostly in an unpleasant shade of turquoise green and has 2 inane looking dancers standing around in supposedly "funky" dance poses, one male, one female, both black. It must be a seriously bad album, and they must have made millions of them, because it can be found in every used CD bin in Ontario, and I don't know anyone who admits to owning a copy. Of course, I don't live around the Jane & Finch area in Toronto, so maybe that's why. |

Subject: RE: BS: Bad Album Cover Art From: Little Hawk Date: 08 Nov 05 - 08:12 PM Omigod. You are sick, man, sick. Really sick. I note that you are really attracted to or else severely bothered by: 1. Nerds! 2. Tacky sexual innuendos! 3. People who are just having good clean FUN! 4. Bizarre perversions. 3. And most of all...ALL of the above at ONCE! EEEEEEEE-YYYAAAAAUGHHH!!!!!!! But listen to this man, just listen: I KNOW one of the original 3 members of the Fernwood Trio! No joke. He lives in Orillia, Ontario, and has played for years off and on in our songcircle, and he usually does the sound (quite well) for the Orillia Folk Society. His name is Dave McMillan. Nice guy. He's still sort of recognizable...being the guy on the right, as you look at the picture...or the guy on the left if you're him in the picture. The Fernwood Trio's name was probably inspired by Fern Resort, a large vacation establishment on one of the lakes here. They used to play it frequently back in the 60's. And ya know what? He said that act got him a lot of good luck with the girls back then. Yesiree. They were the cool of cool. They were mega-cool. Well...until Dylan came along, anyway. |

|
Subject: RE: BS: Bad Album Cover Art From: Cluin Date: 08 Nov 05 - 08:22 PM What I RELALY liked about the Fernwood Trio one was that super groovy avant-gard macaroni font they used for their name. THAT cost `em big bucks, I bet. Just wait'll I post some Shatner covers, LH. Then you can drool. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Bad Album Cover Art From: Cluin Date: 08 Nov 05 - 08:26 PM See? He can try and squeeze it together as much as he wants. The fact is, Bill Shatner has a really huge head. It's been getting bigger every year. The outer man growing to resmble the inner. |
|

|
Subject: RE: BS: Bad Album Cover Art From: Little Hawk Date: 08 Nov 05 - 09:04 PM I was just about to point out that you had neglected the Great Shatner's album art, Cluin, but you have redeemed yourself. And it doesn't end there! I have an incredibly rare Ktel double album of Shatner that HAS to be heard. I'll play it for people on special request, but only for big bucks or certain other inducements...in some cases... One person offered me a mint condition Martin M-38 Grand Orchestra guitar for that album. No way. This kind of thing is simply priceless. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Bad Album Cover Art From: Cluin Date: 08 Nov 05 - 09:57 PM Actually I kinda like that "Has Been" cover. Very stark, yet overdramatic, like the man himself. Nice design. In the other one, with Shat holding the guitar, if you look at a blow-up of it, he's not actually fingering any known chord. He's even stopped the same string twice, 3 frets apart. Looks like he doesn't know when to quit there, either. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Bad Album Cover Art From: Little Hawk Date: 08 Nov 05 - 11:20 PM "Quit" is not a word you will find in Bill Shatner's vocabulary. |

I had confused the color of the woman's dress with the background color of the CD. Pretty awful, isn't it? But I bet it sounds even worse than it looks! ;-) Shatner edges out Big George, Manly, but by an admittedly narrow margin. Big George definitely scores high in the charisma department. He pulls a lot of weight. |

|
Subject: RE: BS: Bad Album Cover Art From: Little Hawk Date: 23 Nov 05 - 01:15 PM It may be a real album, in a sense...what I mean is, it may be one of those humor/pornographic bizarre albums that makes fun of regular music for the chance to make some dirty or sick jokes. Chinga Chavez, for example, is a supposed artist featured on such albums. "Chinga" means f*ck in Spanish. It's an impossible name for a real Hispanic singer to have. |

Subject: RE: BS: Bad Album Cover Art From: Cluin Date: 30 Dec 06 - 11:18 AM It's an alternative vinyl-only (yes, some people still put them out) extended single cover. NOFX (a loudsurferpunkrap combo) is known for its tasteless covers, apparently. like this one. |

Subject: RE: BS: Bad Album Cover Art From: RangerSteve Date: 11 Aug 07 - 01:27 PM Thanks, Cluin. you made my day. But the "Spaghetti Sauce" one is actually a parody, the original being "Whipped Cream and Other Delights" by Herb Alpert. It featured a woman in the same pose, in a mountain of whipped cream, and as a parody, that's not a bad cover. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Bad Album Cover Art From: Cluin Date: 11 Aug 07 - 01:55 PM I know, Steve. My parents had the Herb Alpert original (didn't everyone's?) But it's still pretty unappetizing. Claudia Wheeler... COME ON DOWN! |

Subject: RE: BS: Bad Album Cover Art From: GUEST,meself Date: 11 Aug 07 - 02:22 PM Yeah, but - the ones that are SUPPOSED to be bad don't count (I looked it up in the rule book) - not even the ones that are supposed to be hilariously bad in an ironic way, but are just tediously bad in an adolescent way (these tend to feature farm animals). |

Subject: RE: BS: Bad Album Cover Art From: Cluin Date: 14 Aug 07 - 02:42 PM Jen, it works for me the same as the previous link provided by bobad. Comes up with a guardian graphic file showing that hotlinking to that site from another is disabled. You need to cop'n'paste the URL to the address box to see it. |

Subject: RE: BS: Bad Album Cover Art From: Jack Blandiver Date: 10 Dec 09 - 05:09 AM You never miss a chance do you, WAV? Otherwise... At this time of year it just has to be Mario Lanza's Xmas Hymns & Carols album, which exists in various versions, the most common of which seems to be THIS. Generally you can pick up copies of this in your local charity shop in the 50p vinyl bin. Don't let the cover put you off though, for this is a top piece of work - & worth it for the version of We Three Kings alone, which is damn near definitive! |

Subject: RE: BS: Bad Album Cover Art From: Jack Blandiver Date: 10 Dec 09 - 02:15 PM Alas not, Ed - it's the real McCoy. Word is Wor Johnny will pay good money for every copy destroyed. More alarmingly, it seems it was recorded in 1979. Bang on the nail there, Johnny! Anyway, it tops the #1 slot of bad album covers compiled by Media Whores, and it's up against some very stiff competition. Be warned! This is not for the faint hearted... http://www.africans.co.za/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=959 |

Subject: RE: BS: Bad Album Cover Art From: Cluin Date: 10 Dec 09 - 08:36 PM Charley, I know what you mean. Had a bandmate going on about his idea for our next album cover (which I'll spare you). I'll have to dig up my copy of the book to show him next reheasal. His idea is certainly a candidate if we let him run with it. |
