From: GUEST,Amy

Here is a version of Little Willie that my Mother-in-law's grandmother taught her. It was my mil's first harmonica tune (at age 11). Her grandmother's first harmonica song was a song that had just come out called "Poor Old Jesse James" ;-) Searched the DT for this Little Willie and couldn't locate it, so thought I'd add it here.

I Love Little Willie

I love little Willie, I do Ma-ma
I love little Willie, I do ha-ha
I love little Willie, but don't ya tell Papa
For he won't like it, he won't Ma-ma

Last night he kissed me, he did Ma-ma
Last night he kissed me, he did ha-ha
Last night he kissed me, but don't ya tell Papa
For he won't like it, he won't Ma-ma

He said, he would marry, he did Ma-ma
He said, he would marry, he did ha-ha
He said, he would marry, but don't ya tell Papa
Cause he will stop it, he will Ma-ma

O, now we are married, we are Ma-ma
O, now we are married, we are ha-ha
O, now we are married, an' you can tell Papa
Cause how can he help it, how can he Ma-ma

I moved Amy's "Love Little Willie" here because it's certainly not the same song as Little Willie.

Here's the Traditional Ballad Index entry on this song:

I Love Little Willie

DESCRIPTION: "I love Little Willie, I do, mama, I love Little Willie, But don't you tell Pa! For he wouldn't like it, you know, mama." Similarly: "He wrote me a letter," "He gave me a ring," "And now we are married," "We fuss and we scratch."

Here's the version from Lomax, American Ballads and Folk Songs (1934). Music and words from Bess Brown Lomax.

I Love Little Willie

I love little Willie, I do, Mama.
I love little Willie, tra, la, la, la.
I love little Willie, but don't tell Pa,
For he mightn't like it, Mama, Mama.

He told me he loved me, he did, Mama,
He told me he loved me, tra, la, la, la.
He told me he loved me, but don't tell Pa,
For he mightn't like it, Mama, Mama.

And now we are married, Mama, Mama.
And now we are married, tra, la, la, la.
And now we are married, now you can tell Pa,
For he's got to like it, Mama, Mama.

The tune is very familiar, but I can't tell what other words go to it. Anybody know?

Thanks, Masato. I knew it was familiar.

There are three versions of the lyrics and two tunes in Randolph's Ozark Folksongs. Here's #382A

I Love Little Willie
(Randolph 382A)
contributed by Mr. Louis Goether, Hot Springs, Arkansas, March 16, 1933

I love little Willie
I do, I do,
I love little Willie
But don't you tell Paw!
For I caint help it.
How can I now, Maw?

He wrote me a letter,
He did, he did,
He wrote me a letter,
But don't you tell Paw!
For I caint help it.
How can I now, Maw?

An' now we are married,
We are, we are,
An' now we are married,
But don't you tell Paw!
For I caint help it.
How can I now, Maw?

We fuss an' we scratch,
We do, we do,
We fuss an' we scratch
But don't you tell Paw!
For I caint help it.
How can I now, Maw?

Subject: ADD: He Wears a White Hat (I Love Little Willie)
From: Joe Offer
Date: 28 Nov 05 - 06:33 PM

Here's Randolph #382B, from Mrs. Emma L. Dusenbury of Mena, Arkansas, November 13, 1929. Mrs. Dusenbury callis it "He Wears a White Hat." No tune available for this one.

He Wears a White Hat
(Randolph 382B)

I love somebody, I do, Mamma,
I love somebody too, ha ha ha!
But don't you tell Pa,
For I can't help it, you know, Mamma.

He's coming to see me, he is, Mamma,
He's coming to see me, ha ha ha!
But don't you tell Pa,
For I can't help it, you know, Mamma.

He wears a white hat, he does, Mamma,
He wears a white hat, ha ha ha!
But don't you tell Pa,
For I can't help it, you know, Mamma.

We're going to be married, we are, Mamma,
We're going to be married, ha ha ha!
But don't you tell Pa,
For I can't help it, you know, Mamma.

Next Thursday night it is, Mamma,
Next Thursday night, ha ha ha!
But don't you tell Pa,
For I can't help it, you know, Mamma.

Oh, now we're married, we are, Mamma,
Oh now we're married, ha ha ha!
An' you can tell pa,
For I don't care, you know, Mamma.

The tune is similar to the Lomax tune, but different enough to warrant posting.

Here's Randolph #382C, as sung by Mrs. Irene Carlisle, Fayetteville, Arkansas, February 12, 1942.

I Love Little Willie
(Randolph 282C)

I love little Willie, ha ha, mamma
I love little Willie, mamma,
I love little Willie, but don't you tell pa,
'Cause he wouldn't like it, you know, mamma.

He wrote me a letter, he did, mamma
He wrote me a letter, mamma,
He wrote me a letter, but don't you tell pa,
'Cause he wouldn't like it, you know, mamma.

He gave me a ring, he did, mamma
He gave me a ring, mamma,
He gave me a ring, but don't you tell pa,
'Cause he wouldn't like it, you know, mamma.

We're going to get married, we are, mamma
We're going to get married, mamma,
We're going to get married, but don't you tell pa,
'Cause he wouldn't like it, you know, mamma.

You must all come to see us, ha ha, mamma
You must all come to see us, mamma,
You must all come to see us, but don't you bring pa,
'Cause he wouldn't like it, you know, mamma.

The tune is quite different.

How did this one work out then?

Was this a concert piece, a marital aid.......

you wouldn't believe the trouble I have getting even the most inoffensive little songs on the airwaves.

I haven't as yet written one with that title.

well it would brighten up some of my more intimate moments, and I think it provides sound historical reasons as to why the Campbells were coming.
