WHITE TRASH
Fred Eaglesmith

When I met her, she was a beauty queen who wanted somethin' more,
And now she's hangin' out with me in front of a liquor store.
And it won't start when I shut it off, so she has to get the beer.
She puts it in the back seat and she quietly says to me:

"When exactly did we become white trash?
How come we got seven dogs livin' in the g'rage?
How come the only eight-track in our car is Johnny Cash?
When exactly did we become white trash?

And she tells all our friends that I've got my Ph.D.
But it stands for post-hole digger. It ain't exactly a degree.
And there's curtains on the windows and we hardly watch TV.
And that double-wide is a triple-wide now that she's with me.

And she says, "When exactly did we become white trash?
How come we got seven dogs? Who burned down the g'rage?
How come the only eight-track in our car is Johnny Cash?
When exactly did we become white trash?"

[As sung by Fred Eaglesmith & The Flying Squirrels on "Ralph's Last Show: Live from Santa Cruz," Signature CD #1265, 2001.
["G'rage" approximately rhymes with "badge."]

Where's the song about 'Black Trash'? or would that simply be 'racist'?

Right on, Jules!

As for

And she tells all our friends that I've got my Ph.D.
But it stands for post-hole digger. It ain't exactly a degree.

The composer obviously does not grasp the essence of central American humor. Such a person would never bang home the joke by adding "it ain't exactly a degree." Subtle is the by-word in these matters.

Steve Young also has a song with a similar title - 'The White Trash Song - which he recorded on his excellent 1975 'Honky Tonk Man' album. The album was reissued in 1994 as a CD: Drive Archive DE2-41060.

So when you carve my tombstone, honey, don't worry none about no name
Just say that he come with the morning wind, and he left with the mountain rain
Ah but he could play a fiddle, lord, he could make a dobro ring
He could make a guitar sparkle like the early morning rain

--Stewie.

Fred Eaglesmith say what you may ... but he is a gifted songwriter, artist, environmentalist, and Oxfam Canada's spokesperson for the Make Trade Fair agricultural campaign.

There are a LOT of country songs popular right now that are about various angles of white trash/rednecks/boondocks-- it's a new movement shaping up about classism. Kinda loud and awkward at this point, but blue collar folk gotta find new ways to stand up and keep standing. It's not about racism-- it's about the stereotypes people have been aiming at THEM.

I was called 'a piece of white trash' by an Indian guy in the Northwest Territories. I replied that he was a 'sheep fucker, par excellence'. We seldom spoke after that.

Now you see, that's the difference between where you live and where we live-- in our parts, that would be considered the start of a lovely drinking buddy-ship.

Actually, we did speak on occasion afterwards. We fought a fire together, and that kinda put a few things in perspective.

May I recommend "White Trash Cooking," by Mickler? Still in print after 20 years.

Many useful recipes. Some call it the answer to those southern Junior League cookbooks and their pretentious concoctions, but it stands on its own.
Lady Divine's Chicken-Asparagus Pie is 'divine'. Some are masterpieces of invention- Sheba Spann's Mock She Mock Crab Stew and Peggy's Pig Eggs and Bonnie Jean Butt's Banana Puddin, and Goldie's Yo-Yo Puddin and Cajun Anisette (guaranteed to knock your head off).

Harper Lee ("To Kill a Mockingbird") called it "a beautiful testament to a stubborn people of proud and poignant heritage."

I suppose the purists amongst us will find something wrong with it, but I think this song is funny and worth a liste:

And the next song in the YouTube chain for me is "In Spite of Ourselves." I suppose the purists won't like that one, either, but I love it.
