Subject: Lyr Add: I AIN'T GOT YOU (Jimmy Reed)
From: Jon W.

Here is one version of I Ain't Got You:

I Ain't Got You (Jimmy Reed version)

I got an Eldorado Cadillac
With the spare tire on the back
I got a charge account a Goldbach's
But I ain't got you.

I got a closet full of clothes,
But no matter where I go,
I keep a ring in my nose,
'Cause I ain't got you.

(bridge)
I got a tavern, and a package store
I hit the number, yeah four forty four,
I got a mojo, yes don't you know,
I'm all dressed up with no place to go.

I got women to the right of me
I got women to the left of me
I got women all around me
But I ain't got you

No I ain't got you
No I ain't got you...

There was another version (by the Yardbirds I think) that started with the lines

I got a Maserati GT
With the snake-skin upholstery

The rest was similar if not identical to the above.

And then there's the yuppie computer nerd version:

I gotta Mercedes Benz one nine oh,
With the Alpine car stereo,
But it's my worst case scenario,
'Cause I ain't got you

(bridge) I got a PC, and a Macintosh
I do Windows, but I don't do DOS,
I got a hard drive, and a Zip also,
I'm all dressed up with no place to go.
etc.

I AIN'T GOT YOU was indeed written by Clarence Carter. Besides Carter, it has also been recorded by Aerosmith, The Animals, Billy Boy Arnold, The Blues Brothers, Eric Clapton, John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, Jimmy Reed, The Yardbirds, and several lesser-known performers.

Hey Guys

"I ain't got" you credit is given to CALVIN Carter, who worked with Jimmy Reed at VeeJay Records

so it is credited to one or the other at some points

As a kid and with commercial radio we was hearing it from the Yardbirds, but Billy Boy Arnold it is said recorded the original. I still listen to Billy's version all the time and prefer it over the Jimmy Reed version.
As for any "several lesser-know performers" I was always impressed with the 9 minute version by Blue Oyster Cult, it is outstanding, transformed to Rock n Roll, uptempo and of course Blazing Guitars. My opinion is and I have heard them all. "On Your Feet Or On Your Knees" the Best Rock LIVE album out there. Give it a try, from 1975.

Billy Boy was also signed to VeeJay records, I think he had the first crack at recording it.

Billy Boy Arnold recorded his version on VJ in 1955.
