Subject: Lyr Add: ON THE BANKS OF JEDDORE From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 26 Aug 06 - 03:16 PM Lyr. Add: ON THE BANKS OF JEDDORE (Tune- Farewell to Nova Scotia) Nova Scotia is a free-born coast. Its fisherfolk live on the sea. The northern ocean I must cross. Chorus: Farewell, Scotties, for I must go. I'm griev'd to leave my native shore, I'm grieved to leave my parents all, My aged mother I adore, And the bonnie wee lassie, On the banks of Jeddore. My sailing ship is waiting on the waves. The signal beckons me away, And bids me part with you my love. Chorus: Farewell, lassie, for I must go- I'm griev'd to leave.... The waning sun has set in the west. The whipporwill sings on the hill. A bold sea rover must not rest. Chorus: Farewell, darling, for I must go... The lonely cries of the gulls aloft Drift on the wind that fills the sails. Away I'm sailing on the sea. Chorus: Farewell ye all, for I'm gone.... Bright is the light of the summer moon, It steals through the curtain of night, And I am dreaming of my home. Chorus: Farewell, my land, for I must go.... Sung by Charles Barbeau, Beauce, Quebec- adapted by Marius Barbeau. Marius Barbeau, Arthur Lismer and Arthur Bourinot, 1947 (1963), "Come A Singing!" Canadian Folk-songs, National Museum of Canada, Bull. No. 107, Anthropological Series No. 26, pp. 1-2, with music. The tune is that of the better known "Farewell to Nova Scotia," but in part paced differently from the usually sung version. See DT Study, Farewell to Nova Scotia, thread 63989: Farewell |
