please leave me my little teddy bear

My mother sang a song to me when I was an infant, and in later years when she got nostalgic. In fact she sang it to me about a week before she died. I now have great-grandchildren and would love to sing it to them. It concerns a child who being told of 'poor little girls and boys' tells Mum to give his/her things away to the poor children, but ends each verse(or chorus, Im not sure which) with the plea 'But please leave me my little Teddy Bear'. Can anybody help please?

Hi Roy
I've found a snippet from someone reminiscing but I'll keep looking and check the source and add it later.

In my cupboard I have lots of toys,
Dollies and soldiers and sailor boys
at the top, the tip tip top, stands my own little teddy bear
At Christmas time, my mummy will say,
which of your toys will you give away?
I will say-take all thats there,
but leave me my own little teddy bear!

That came from this site and a thread asking what songs Mums sing to their children these days.

http://www.netmums.com/coffeehouse/general-coffeehouse-chat-514/coffee-lounge-18/749712-songs-you-sing-your-little-ones-your-parents-family-used-sing-you.html

The use of the term teddy bear dates the song to be after 1902 but the reference to soldiers and sailor boys possibly makes it post World War 1
song. I think the maestro searcher will probably come up with more soon.

A Lullaby by Florence Steane

In my cupboard are many toys
Ships and sailors and soldier boys
A doll and a golliwog are there
But most of all I love my teddy bear

He sits with me for dinner and tea
He always goes to bed with me
We're not afraid of the dark of night
We cuddle together as tight as tight.

my little teddy always played and danced together
there was this little pretty forest where i lived i always walked in there when my mama was gardening and we walked over thick logs over streams i have to say i never lost my teddy till i was 13 years old because i brought it to school and we had a really mean princable named mrs.prunsky she ripped her head off! that was mabey a bad day of my life but what scared me more of my family dying in world 2 i was 1 of the children surviving i am now 86 years old and i still pray for my mama and my papa and my teddybear.

You, your teddy and the evil Mrs Prunsky really need to be put in a song.

I still have my Teddy. He was given to me when I was two, and at six years old I was a bit shocked that he wore no clothes so I knitted him some pink knickers. He's still wearing them, but they're faded now. He sits on my bedroom cabinet. Dear old Ted, I've asked that he be buried with me.

You all have it wrong.

In my cupboard are lots of toys:
Dolls soldiers and sailor boys.
There's a big Noah's ark and a blackboard there,
But best of all is my teddy bear.

He sits beside at lunch and tea,
Climbs the stairs to bed with me.
He's not afraid of the dark at night.
We cuddle together as tight as tight.

When Christmas comes mama will say:
Which of your toys will you give away?
Dear mama, you can have what's there.
Just leave me my own little teddy bear.

In my cupboard are many toys .. dolls and sailors and soldier boys ... Noah's ark and a top are there but the nicesest of all is my teddy bear. He growls and growls as if to say kindly turn me the other way. I turn him round and I kiss his nose ... and dance him around on his tippy toes ! At Christmas time if my mummy would say.. which of your toys will you give away.. ? I would say dear mummy you can have all there but leave me my own little Teddy Bear !!

Yes this version below is exactly what my mum sang to me. And now I sing it to my children. Although I have an extra verse after "but nicest of all is my teddy bear". The extra verse goes:

"The dolls can't speak they are most absurd, The ark can't utter a single word, But teddy bear in his coat of brown, Will growl if you turn him upside dow."

Then continues with "he gowns and growls as if to say......."
