Mike Pinder, the last founding member of the Moody Blues passed away on April 24, 2024. He was 82 years old. Orchestra, rock, vocals, psychedelic, "Days of Future Past" created a sound I had never heard before.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Together with Tony Clarke, engineer Derek Varnals also contributed heavily to the creation of the Moody Blues' classic studio sound, working with Pinder and Clarke to create a more symphonic overlapping sound on the Mellotron as opposed to the sharp 'cut off' the instrument normally gave, partly achieved by removing all the "sound effects" tapes (trains, whistles, cockerel crowing, etc.) and then 'doubling up' the tapes of orchestral instruments' sounds, which combined with Pinder's knowledge of the instrument and ability at playing it, and Clarke and Varnals' recording skills, created an orchestral 'wave' sound that characterised the Moody Blues' music thereafter.

They provided the musical backdrop for my first dalliance with psychedelia and Mr. Pinder's keyboards were, to me, the most mind-blowing part of that band. RIP

Nights in White Satin is one of my all-time favourite songs. It stops me in my tracks whenever I hear it. The rest of the world just fades into the background.

[Oddly enough, my other two all-time favourite songs are White Room by Cream, and A Whiter Shade of Pale by Procul Harum but that belongs in a different discussion, I think.]

Rest in peace, Mike Pinder. My eternal gratitude to you and the other members of Moody Blues for some beautiful musical memories.

I always liked Go Girl.Saw them at Cleethorpes Winter Gardens in 1965! Denny Laine apologised to Bessie Banks for outdoing her original recording. RIP Mr. Pinder

Until reading the bio, I had never encountered the term, "Mellotron."

Obviously, a peculiar odd instrument. One I would like to see, and play the keyboard. Watching schematic disruptions ... I have no clue.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Another "rabbit hole" to dive down ... who, when, why, how?

Perhaps you mean ‘Go Now’? ;-)

I saw them at Scunthorpe Baths around the same time - easily the loudest band I’d ever heard at the time! My then girl-friend and I watched them from the balcony, the whole structure was vibrating from the volume of the band, especially the bass. Fabulous evening!
