I was looking at a picture of Australian bush musicians actually taken outback. There were no guitars there. The concertina and button accordian seem to be the most prominent. Of course, a guitar is hard to carry around when you are an itinerate worker ("On the wallaby track.") as they say here. I am sure the harmonica was popular; but it doesn't show up in the pictures.
