Just been reading some history. Apparently American codes have 4 downs is a result of Harvard University not having room for a full sized pitch, and many of the differences are a result of the cramped playing surface used by American teams. Just to compare, the Football Association laws of 1863 specify a length of 200 yards (same as the Melbourne Football Club laws of 1858). |
