I said it many years ago, if Detroit builds cars that get 40 miles to the gallon, and they become the most popular car on the road, the oil companies will simply jack up the price of gasoline to compensate for the loss of revenue.
I worked in a couple of gas stations back when most cares were gas guzzlers and the price of regular was .39 cents per gallon. Buicks, Cadillac and Chrysler full size cars got 15 mpg. My 1954 Pontiac still gets about 15 gallons to the mile.
