Essentially, the issue is Google Search (or I assume Google News - I've never used it) often presents a synopsis of the news article from the newspaper's site to allow you to decide whether to click the link. If you don't click the link the newspaper gets no advertising revenue - but it provided the data. So Google's business - presenting search results - relies on the work done by the newspaper. And they want paying for it. More generally, Google (and any search engine) relies on content provided by others to display results, and show you adverts - 'sponsored' links. Some sites (e.g. Mudcat, whose content was provided free) are happy with that. Others, who spend a lot of money providing content, are not.
