Some really interesting points made here - much appreciated. The Jewish/Yiddish melody similarities is interesting - the German version in the video link sounds a bit like it could be from the soundtrack of Fiddler on the Roof. Certainly any thoughts of it being a traditional English tune are immediately dispelled. But it is still puzzling as to how it ever became a '16th century English folk song'.
