The Planxty version, "Johnny of Brady's Lea," was posted way back in nineteen hundred and ninety-eight, thread 6867: Johnny

Child 114f compares with another long version(26 verses) in Bronson, Group Ab 9.
The ballad is listed in both Child and Bronson as "Johnie Cock.' As far as the date is concerned, Bronson notes that Percy received a copy in 1780 but did not publish, and Scott published the first "conflated text" with no refrain (not interested in the tale as a song).

To simplify coordination of the various texts, perhaps these threads should be gathered under "Johnie Cock"- The various spellings make it difficult to search them out. On the other hand, modern singers use titles similar to Planxty's.

The song is not in Brown (North Carolina), Randolph (Ozarks), nor Cox (West Virginia).
