How are you today, Sinsull? Has there been any improvement or are you still in the Slough of Despond?

maeve, sick and tired of doing laundry in her wringer washer...

Q, I was afflicted with the same winter itching problem, mostly on my lower legs just above the ankles and my abdomen at the waistline. I heard a dermatologist on the radio recommend lotions containing urea as the most effective skin moisturizer. I tried one called Uremol which contains 10% urea (a highly hydrophilic compound) and haven't looked back - it worked beautifully. I have since recommended it to many people and everyone now swears by it. This year I started using olive oil based soap just by chance and so far my winter itching problem has not yet surfaced so I will keep on using it and see if that helps.

Sins has got cooties!

Like others have said, get thee to a dermatologist, M'dear, and leave the petroleum jelly alone.

May have nothing to do with the problem, but check soaps, body cleansers, laundry detergent, etc.

My problem was itching and scratching. The doctor recommended several changes, starting with Dove soap for sensitive skin, dispensing with all products such as Bounce in the drying cycle, and use of Tide-free as the detergent (and as noted above by several, stay away from perfumed products).
As a skin lotion, she recommended a product called Neutroderma for a start.
The skin specialist echoed the recommendations, but preferred another product for the lotion, but it was less effective than the Neutroderma, and very expensive as well. Also prescribed was Beniderm, a prescription in cream form, to use in severely affected spots. It does help, but can't be used for large areas (cortizone included in the formula).
I don't have scaling, so doubtfully your problem. My eyes are sensitive to dry air, but the common saline drops are sufficient for me.

The itching is a lot less, but I still have it. It is a common complaint here, where the air is very dry and cold in the winter, and often there is thin cloud cover, obscuring the sun (which is low in the winter anyway- central Alberta). The well-to do can spend a lot of winter time outside the province (Hawai'i, etc.).

It may take the allergist-dermatologist a while to narrow down the cause of your problem, but actions such as the above may help. My daughter-in-law is a physician, and she keeps me informed of new treatments.

For a while now I've been using aqueous cream, both for washing patches of dry skin (don't ask!) so that the skin doesn't dry out, and for moisturising those patches after washing.

It won't fix the underlying problem, but the problem with rashes like this is that the skin splits and the area gets infected from something else, so the original cause might have gone away but now you've got something else causing it! Aqueous cream helps make those patches of dry skin supple and strong without it splitting, cracking or flaking.

Also consider trying an antihistamine cream. If your problem is sleepiness when you take tablets (as it sounds like), then the cream form might be better.

Graham.

Ow, Mary! What are you using for soap at the moment? Also, laundry detergents and fabric softener sheets can do a number on people with skin allergies.

I suspect my new job environment is contributing - a sealed building. But this started in August before the job and the first bout was triggered by nail polish remover. I haven't used any nail products since. I think it may have triggered a sensitivity to other things. Better today but I used Bacitricin last night. My eyes are fine and were checked by a specialist. Just a diseased looking scaly rash. Very attractive. I am glad I wear glasses - at least it is some cover.

yep I'm with Kat on this one

no way should you be putting vaseline on it - or baby products - a lot of those don't let the skin "breathe" either.... plus many contain perfume & alcohol which will make things worse..

see the dermatologist

but if you like try paw paw cream

Re contactlenses - for 20+ years I wore the hard perspex ones with NO hassles - just a little bit of redness.

So he insisted that I get SOFT ones - went thru nightmare madness for AGES till I ditched the bloody SPECIALIST and just listened to the optometerist - it was the SILICON intended for 'long wear' that made my use churn out excess mucus that the lenses sucked up and turned opaque in a few hours!

Took a search, but eventually fond ones that I can wear with no hassle.

Well, she did have Micca there!**bg**

Richard, most baby lotions, etc. have scents, i.e. perfumes, added to them which can be a real irritant to some, esp. if the skin is broken. We couldn't use any of them on my grandson.

When my son's feet were cracked from being so dry, they were extremely painful. Eucerin was what the doc recommended and the only thing which worked.

Mary, how are you, tonight?

I also suggest seeing a dermatologist. But just to add to the list of possible causes, this derm. site says wearing nail polish is a frequent culprit in rashes around the eyes.

Mites are common in facial areas and usually not troublesome. See Demodex
If they are a problem, a dermatologist can help, but this is doubtfully the cause.

Dust mites are everywhere and necessary to get rid of shed skin cells- If one is alergic to them, one has a real problem, but it can be controlled.

There are many causes of allergy; it may take a while for the allergist to sort it out. Think back and see if you have changed anything since the problem developed- you may help the allergist narrow down the causes. New pet? Change in soaps, cleaning agents, etc., etc.

One cause of facial skin irritation few people think of is sitting in front of a CRT. They put an electric charge on your skin (particularly if it's dry) so it attracts dust (with whatever allergens may be in the dust, e.g. mites).

Do you have a fringe, and have you had your hair dyed recently? If so put those together.

"...wrung out just enough to keep cold water running down your collar may help."

That was meant to be< "keep cold water FROM running down your collar" of course. Sorry, Sinsull. The best moisturizers from my dermatologist seem to be based on oatmeal as a main ingredient. Avena is one.

Baby lotion, and baby oil, and the various things you can put on babies arses are good and usually non-irritant moisturisers.

In terms of more immediate help, does a cold, moist compress give any relief? You want to calm the reaction, and a (well rinsed) washcloth soaked in cool or cold water and then wrung out just enough to keep cold water running down your collar may help. Be sure your hands are very clean and well-rinsed, and that you keep from touching the inflammation no matter how much it drives you batty. I would avoid soaps completely in terms of your face.

Love,

maeve

Do you wear contact lenses? Have you changed your solution recently or has the solution changed without you realising it?

Only a thought as I don't wear lenses but I do know of someone who was allergic to the solution he used and the symptoms sound similar. It's something to consider if you're eliminating allergens.

I do agree that a visit to a dermatologist is the best course of action. Once your system is already on the alert, you could easily become sensitized to over-the-counter treatments as well.

The MD we first visited thought True Love had a fungal infection and prescribed strong meds accordingly. The dermatologist recognized it as a sensitivity brought on by extreme dryness. Her effective treatment was much less invasive and did the trick.

You'd be better off with the specialist! I'm sorry you're dealing with this, my friend. It is no fun at all!

I can't believe your doc recommended petroleum jelly. Your skin cannot breath breathe with that stuff on! Whatever you get, be sure it says noncomedogenic which means it won't clog pores and such. If nothing else, try Eucerin.

Try claritin during the day? It's not supposed to make you drowsy.

I agree, though, if it is that bad, a dermatologist will be your best bet. We've had similar with Morgan, when he was a baby he had bad eczema and had to have a prescription, as well as go to an allergist.

Good luck!

kat

Ditto, and the best defense against allergies is a strong immune system, particularly a strong adrenal system-- it's the adrenals that pump out the natural cortisol in our bodies that responds to allergens (and inflammations and stress), for which so many people now use the artificial version (cortisone cream or cortisones by mouth or injection). Cortisone (and prednisone, and all the 'sones) helps in the short term, but actually dampens the adrenal response over the longer term.

More info about rebuilding adrenals is available via PM if you wish-- I have a standard doc I've given many folks.

The thing is, newly-sensitive allergies can be a sign that the adrenals are exhausted, and the more that is demanded of them the more help they need. It's this allergy today-- it may leave you open to others, as well, as it weakens your system-- ain't aging FUN?

I would suggest seeing a dermatologist and getting a proper diagnosis, then you would know how to treat it.

Best stuff I have found is Bach's Remedy Cream (or something like that) in the Organic aisle at Hannafords or at Lois' Natural Foods, Mary. It's a bit pricey (about $12-$14 for a tube) but it is well worht it, and you don't need much so it'll last awhile. I use it on my hobbit feet and a good friend of mine has actually cleared up her eczema on her hands with it. It's all natural and I, who am allergic to EVERYTHING, can use it with no problems.

For the second time in a matter of months, the area around my eyes is reacting to "something". An online search says it is probably a cosmetic so I have to stop using all cosmetics and then add them back one at a time to see what the problem is. Meantime I am using petroleum jelly to keep the area moist.
It starts out red and irritated then dries out and flakes. The first time it happened I thought it was sunburn. Bacitricin & Cortaid don't help. Antihistamine tablets at night do but I can't take them during the day. Aloe irritates.

Any suggestions for easing the redness and scaliness? I look weird and it hurts.
My eyes are not red or irritated or running or gummy - not blethoria. Just the skin under and the upper lid in the crease. Doctor says it is an allergy and use petroleum jelly to keep it moist. After a week it is worse.
GRRRRR
