1. These are "before" taxes wages, GfinS... So you got that one wrong...

2. We had stronger teacher's unions in the late 70's then we have now or any time since then... So you got that one wrong...

3. Abortion rates do not count in the statistics of infant mortality, GFser... That makes you 0-3... Heck, if Mudcat was a sport you'd fit right in in Washington, D.C....

4. I'll give you half a point on the new health care bill 'cause it ain't even implemented fully...

5. And I'll have to give you a full point on the debt... I meant to type annual debt so you do get a point...

Let's see??? Accordin' to the Wes Ginny Slide Rule you ended up 3 1/2 wrong and 1 1/2 correct... Not too bad...

BTW, you get a warm & fuzzy point for the "I liked your impassioned post" but then lost half a point for the "In a way" giving you a total of 1/2 warm & fuzzy points!!!

Hey, we're makin' progress...

Bobert, I liked your impassioned post, in a way..but...the Democrats share some of the blame, of that, which I posted.
Because the Dems are comprised of many diverse interests, and groups,(in the common folk level) they are a bit scattered, as far as a power base. The 'leadership'(?), though, is a different story.
As far as being 'ill-informed', I don't think you can lay that at my feet!
If I were to believe you, in your entirety, then I'd be persuaded that corruption is only limited to the Republicans..which, of course, is utter nonsense!!
As far as, "We pay less in taxes than any developed/industrialized nation in the world... We are the least governed and the least regulated...".......GOOD!!!

"1.the actual wages of the working class have been stagnant for the last 35 years while those of our competitors have increased..."

Due to paying interests to the 'Fed', and 'foreign aid' which is nothing less than bribery to keep peace...

"2.the US has gone from 1st in science in math to 23rd"

And so it would be a logical conclusion, that increased teacher union's pay raises are doing NO good! We're missing the boat!

"3.the infant mortality in the US is 27th"

Are you including the wonderful world of abortions???

"4.we pay 17% of our GNP on health care compared to an average of 8% that out competitors pay but don't have decent health care except fort the rich."

And now after the 'new' health care fraud, we can pay more, and get less...except more government intrusion in our lives, and less freedom!

"5.that our national debt is $1.4T, which is higher than the next 10 countries debt combined"

Misinformed????..Try 14 trillion.....thanks a lot to BORROWING and interests paid for excessive, wasteful programs. By 2020, we will be paying 1 trillion each year, on the debt alone!!

All of it, from both sides is a scam! Both sides have a 'global' agenda. Maybe without their bullshit, of wanting to control how that goes down, we ALL get get along quite fine, thank you!

I believe it is the objective for different reasons, to topple us, and beat us into submission..throwing out the baby with the bathwater!
...and STILL, the 'manipulators' in control, will remain in control!...and that, too, is within their 'negotiations'..but not for us!
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Akenaton, Thank you....and it is the truth. WE The People, are not the ones who start the wars..but We The People, are herded in to fight them. I think without the MOTIVES of the 'manipulators', we would all find that the people of this earth might just get along just fine!!!...
...maybe even sing to each other....

You apparently are not listening to the many Dems in Congress who are saying the same things, GfinS... They are fighting to get just one minute of microphone time but the corporate media is hoggin' it for the FOX Noise machine... The Big Three (ABC, NBC and CBS) are all being led by the nose by FOX Noise...

That is the reali9ty... It isn't that every danged Dem in Congress is some corporate whore 'cause most of them have been trying to get the story out...

Just because you are unwilling to educate yourself by watching the only outlet for the truth, MSNBC, doesn't make you any less "part of the problem"... Reality is that the Republican Party is going to try to dismantle the New Deal... Their 35 year old strategy of "starving the beast" has the federal government on life support... That is reality...

What is not real is the PR bullshit that the Repubs have crammed into your head that we are over-taxed, over-governed and over-regulated 'causde none of those things are true... The Repubs have spend hundreds of million$$$$ of $$$$ to plant those lies in people heads...

We pay less in taxes than any developed/industrialized nation in the world... We are the least governed and the least regulated...

And isn't it curious that while the Repubs have been busy starving the beast that:

1.the actual wages of the working class have been stagnant for the last 35 years while those of our competitors have increased...

2.the US has gone from 1st in science in math to 23rd

3.the infant mortality in the US is 27th

4.we pay 17% of our GNP on health care compared to an average of 8% that out competitors pay but don't have decent health care except fort the rich

5.that our national debt is $1.4T, which is higher than the next 10 countries debt combined

Yeah, the reality is that the battle lines are being drawn right now... The Repubs are poised to do exactly what their daddies and grand-daddies couldn't do: kill off the New Deal!!!

This ain't no time for rationalizations and excuses on why you don't think you have to do anything, or even spend the little tiomje it takes to be educated on what is happening and just who are the folks fighting the good fight, 'cause there are plenty... If you are waiting to hear them on CBS, NBC, ABC or Fox Noise then the battle will be over before you realize it even began...

Like I said, "Yer either part of the problem or yer part of the solution".... Remaining uninformed = part of the problem...

Well, Amos, and Bobert....you actually said it..but you didn't see it.
and here is the quote, "...magazine and he purdy much said what I am sayin' and that is that folk musicans are supposed to be like "reporters"..."

So, if that is the case, and I somewhat agree, (though possibly more than reporters)...reporting what, to where???..for what??...You mean like 'Up from the street?' Common people to common people? From the bottom up?? If you meant those, I heartily agree!!...Why???
Because is certainly isn't happening from the top down!! All we get are lies, fronting a 'cause', as a masquerade, as an attempt to FOOL us, while back room deals are cut, and commerce pays off their cronies...and if the condition of the country slips, or we go further into debt, accommodating lucrative profiteering, in passing bills that are full of shit...except, for those benefactors of the back room deals!

Hey, LBJ and Vietnam was exactly the same fucking thing!..and while organized crime, mixed with elements of the intelligence community, and military made billions from selling arms to the Shah of Iran, from our Vietnam inventories, and the Golden Triangle churned out drugs..they drug the war out..to exact every profit they could make of it!!! While the C***suckers, negotiated for 14 months ON THE SHAPE of the table, for the Paris Peace talks, our brothers and sisters were getting snuffed out there..and just as bad, we were doing a lot of snuffing of our own. They we actually in no fucking hurry, to end the war...BUT...the debate went on in Washington, and in our press....and NEVER mentioned the real reason we stayed so long!!!
And its IS the same fucking thing going on today!! AIN'T nobody in the beltway telling you or us, what is REALLY happening, and why..are they???....but...they have managed to get this fraudulent debate going on that has 'right' vs. 'left' distract and occupy everyone's minds, while they are at work, AGAIN!!....DON'T BE A PART OF IT!!!!
It is a smokescreen, and they are not listening, are they??...We just have to accept whatever crap they say, and be conditioned to accept any and all bullshit, profiteering bill the pass..at our freedom's expense!....and all the lower level party guys applaud them....only because, it was a 'score' for 'their side'......only, their side, ain't on their side...BUT, take heart, as long as you blindly root them on, and get all excited about them, guys such as yourselves, miss what this is really about......just like before! IN other words, any progress, any solutions, and any work that gets it done, any productivity will come up from the street...up from the people. NOT from the top down...they are ALWAYS behind the curve. They are lawyers and lawyers get greased, no matter if they win or lose..and they will argue for innocent, when they know their defendant is really guilty. They make their living misrepresenting the truth, but winning 'legally'...and making 'legal', that which is criminal, either legally, or morally. This is what you have representing you...and they've being lying through their teeth to you, to get you to trust them..........and you, and Amos so stall-worthily cheer them on.

No, Pal, change is going to come from the bottom up..and it always does. It will start in the minds and hearts of ordinary people..and will be made manifest in the love and common decency of people....not legislated down and enforced by 'police' power!

Anyway, Have a Happy and Prosperous THINK!...(maybe even a 'remember'!)

Bobert....I dont advocate lowering living standards as a tool, these standards are going to fall whether we change or not and that fall can be placed squarely at the door of Capitalism. No excuses no get- outs, like " "Its all the fault of the other party"

This is a systemic failure.....we had a nominally left of centre government in power and are basically in the same, or worse position as you.

If we are to starve, we must ensure that the starvation leads to something positive.

Now as fir folk musicans???

Think it's time to get writin'... I mean, we have another Vietnam right here on our doorstep and it's called Mitch McConnell and his radical Repubs...

Yeah, we know that LH and GfinS have taken a pass but they don't represent the folk community... They represent the "Just Watching Party"...

Don't join that party, BTW, 'cause at the end of the day we will all be judged by how many peas we put in the pot... And as far as I can see there ain't no "Just watching pot"... Not sure how this relates but my grandma always said that a watched pot never boils???

Wrong, Ake... Amos and I are on the correct side of this issue... You may think that starving the beast, which in this country will mean poverty rates like we haven't seen since the Great Depression is the formula for success... I think it is archaic thinkin' that uses human misery as some kinda convoluted and sadistic tool to achieve greater political power??? That is some very messed up thinking... I mean, it is like using leeches to try to cure disease... I mean, it is severely outdated...

Wrong Amos....you got to know what the problem is before you can fix it. It is the purpose of Political Parties to distract attention from the root problems, by replacing them with false problems.

For over fifty years I've watched folks squabbling with one another over idiocies, while the people were being bled dry....change must come and can only come when the system is weakened.

and by change I mean real change, not a change of presidential colour or minority "rights".
Our living standards are about to fall by at least 30%......might as well make that suffering mean something!!

Bobert is right; seeing what is and saying what you see is a critical part of sanity and honesty. ANd your blanket condemnation of all parties in the game is kind of apathetic, since it opens no doors to improvement. You and Little Hawk should go off and take a long vacation together, and spend a whole mess o'time agreeing how everything is fucked. It'd do you good. Well, no, it wouldn't ... but it would make you feel right, anyway. That's gotta be worth something, I suppose...

Well, Capt'n... You have experience at this kinda thing...

But, heck, I was just readin' some stuff that yer buddy, Utah Phillips, said in an old "Performing Songwriters" magazine and he purdy much said what I am sayin' and that is that folk musicans are supposed to be like "reporters"... I understand that... He also said that something that I learnt off mah main man, Sparky Rucker, and that is "if yer gonna get the song then ya' gotta sit thru the sermon"...

So here the country is at a crossroads with the Republicans wantin' to return to the good old days (1920s) and the Dems wanting to hang on to the New Deal and Great Society...

I cannot fathom any real folk musician being able to just sit this one out... I mean, let's get real here... This is what folk music is about... Utah got it right... We supposed to be "reporters"... That goes with what we do... The rich folk don't need folk musicians... They really don't need squat... They got all the squat that money can buy...

BTW, Capt'n... I'd be more than willing to send you this issue of "Performing Songwriters" I you like just 'cuase it has this nice article on Utah in it...

Also has a nice one on Bonnie Raitt...

Bobert: "Here's the deal, GfinS... Yes, the Dems and Repubs are like two rival fraternities and they both are dependent on $$$ in order to run their campaigns..."

With all due respect,..and you said it right, "...the Dems and Repubs are like two rival fraternities and they both are dependent on $$$ in order to run their campaigns..."

But in fact, though they are LIKE two rivaling fraternities, that is the theater they perform. Though idealistically, there might be sincere folks going in, once they learn the ropes, its SHOWTIME with big 'bennies' from there on out!

Short on time.....I'll pick it up later..

I know all them songs, GfinS... I mean, I was playing 'um back then and I fully understand what both Lennon and Dylan were sayin'... I also who what the Who was saying when they sang "We will not be fooled again" so it ain't like I haven't given this stuff some thought...

Here's the deal, GfinS... Yes, the Dems and Repubs are like two rival fraternities and they both are dependent on $$$ in order to run their campaigns...

One party, however, wants very much to kill off the New Deal and the other is fighting to not let that happen... That is reality... If John Lennon were still alive he certainly wouldn't just sit on the side lines singin' "Both Side Blues"... Dylan??? Well, he has always been completely apolitical...

But for the rest of us, if we really do care about real people, there really isn't much choice... We either support the one party that will fight to protect the New Deal or we don't... It's all just that simple...

BTW, sittin' out is a vote against the New Deal...

Historically this is when folk musicians stepped up... I mean, what would Woody be singin' about??? Folkies knew their place during civil rights... Lots of folkies, tho not gettin' radio time, knew there place as George Bush started 2 wars... Now you have Boss Hog trying to push the country back to somewhere around 1920 and, guess what, there are folkies out there now writing songs and saying "Hell no, you won't"...

Another 60s slogan was "Yer either part of the problem or part of the solution"... That's purdy much where the folk community should be... Sitting on the sidelines is "part of the problem"...

Correction...that is not really relevant, but I quoted something out of order...but the meaning is still the same....from the Lennon tune:

"We all want to change the world
But when you talk about destruction
Don't you know that you can count me out?"

In any event, Both parties have been destroying the integrity of our country, at the beckon call of wealthy 'Boss Hoggs'...and 'Boss Hogg' would be all for violence in our streets, if they could turn a profit as a result of it!!!
The meaning is still the same, and still remains.

Bobert: "..You can talk all you want about how musicians should do this or that to further the "cause" but if yer "cause" is all about protecting the rich then in the words of John Lennon, "Count me out"....?

And the line before it is, "and if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao, You ain't gonna make it with anyone anyhow...."

And here, being as you HATE correct context, and pull snippets out, to further your bullshit political brain-lock:

Revolution Lyrics
John Lennon

You say you want a revolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world
You tell me that it's evolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world
But when you talk about destruction
Don't you know that you can count me out?

Don't you know it's gonna be
Alright?
Alright?
Alright?

You say you've got a real solution
Well, you know
We'd all love to see the plan
You ask me for a contribution
Well, you know
We are doing what we can
But if you want money for people with minds that hate
All I can tell is, brother, you'll have to wait

Don't you know it's gonna be
Alright?
Alright?
Alright?

You say you'll change the constitution
Well, you know
We all want to change your head
You tell me it's the institution
Well, you know
You'd better free your mind instead
But if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao
You ain't gonna make it with anyone anyhow

Don't you know it's gonna be
Alright?
Alright?
Alright?
Alright?
Alright?
Alright?

Look, Bobbsie-Babes, The so-called 'Democratic Party', as well with the Repugnantcans, have LONG ago sold out. They are both married to your 'Boss Hogg'...but like a betrayed wife, you seem to be the LAST to know! You don't seem to get that, but there doesn't seem to be much that you get, these days, anyway...eyes glazed over, in a trance, chanting 'Heil Blindness'..Heil Boss Hogg, Who art in disguise, hidden be your game..."

Sorry you spent so much of your time, and life gambling on a dead horse. Your cause got co-opted out of your blurry eyed youth..and out of grasp of your understanding. Get over it. BOTH, yes, BOTH.. B..O..T..H.., parties have been corrupt for years, and Do not represent the Will of the American people, nor the populace of this country..and the polls back that up. 13%..got that?? 13% of Americans approve of Congress. I guess that's because Congress is doing a GREAT job, eh???

Here, let's try this lyric, from the time of your youth....and see how many more years it takes for you to figure it out....and that it means BOTH sides of the isle.......

Take a Slow, careful read of this...We know you already know it...but you really don't know what it means....:

Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.

That song was, and is NOT a political endorsement for the Democrapic Pottie, any more than the Repugnicunt Pottie!

So, if I want to 'bag' on both parties, because they both suck eggs, and are rotten to the core, and have been corrupted beyond recognition, I'll do just that! It's not my fault that you can't see, nor discern the obvious! Sorry all your efforts were a waste of time and energy. I guess I'd feel like you would, if I ran around the neighborhood, and workplace trying to solicit support....while my head was up my ass!

I'll give you one more clue, though I stated it before,..THE whole, of the body politic, is riddled with cancer...and standing on your Democratic soapbox, beating your chest, extolling the virtues, of a broken, and openly rejected, sold out whore, of the remnants of the fucked up Democratic Party, and acting like the can do NO wrong, is truly an embarrassment to you.....and the same goes to the Republicans. They have made themselves obsolete, and irrelevant!
Beat Away, you're living in the past, spouting idealistic pipe dreams of the past idiots, who didn't see it coming!

Fuck man, play your ax...do your blues. Leave this psychic vampire politics bullshit, in the trash, out back. Get your mind back!

Hey, GfinS.... Let's count the times that you have played the "both sides the same" card... You are addicted to the 2000 Nader election campaign jargon... I know it backward and forward... I knocked on alot of doors with it... And it was real then just as the reality that the Dems have gotten it is now...

But you are completely stuck in 2000...

That's what I mean by Betty Ford... You seem addicted to an old story line... Yeah, I know, it's an easy story line where you really don't have to deal with policy issue by policy issue 'cause you can just say "Hey, they are both the same" and go on with yer life feeling all smug and "classless and free"... Don't work like that... The next line was "Yer all fucking peasants as far as I can see"...

Yeah, you may be happy with seein' the New Deal get shredded but I ain't... And I hate to break it to ya' but there are one shitload of Dems who ain't ready to see it go down Boss Hog's drain either...

But maybe you don't give a shit??? I donno... What kinda folk musician doesn't give a shit about the real lives of real people... This is the real deal here... You can talk all you want about how musicians should do this or that to further the "cause" but if yer "cause" is all about protecting the rich then in the words of John Lennon, "Count me out"....

I mean, get off yer "both sides" Republican PR bullshit...

I'd love to see some leak that could be used to prosecute Bush, Cheney, Wolfy, Pearle, Rice or Rumsey fir war crimes...

Baby Bush, Cheney, Mad-Dog Wolfowitz & Co. managed to needlessly kill hundreds of thousands.

Lets see them in jail first.

Petraeus is getting people killed every day. Lets lock him up, too.

And I don't think that Obama much cares about Wikileaks all that much 'er they would be playin' hardball... Right now I think Holder is just kinda making the perfunctory protestations and threats...

As for "the system"... Well, yeah, Ake, "the system" will survive but that isn't the issue here in my book... As the Obama government are intent on stopping the airing of these leaks, possibly it could pertain to something which is bad for the health of the system.

No matter who the president/prime minister is, the system will always come first.

We will see, Ake... I mean, we have a new consumer protection czar and it kinda depends on what common-sense regs she can get implemented... Put that on top of the new banking regs and I believe we have the beginnings of some saner financial policy...

The problem with our "capitalism" is that way too much of our "capital" is being hoarded and not invested by the upper 5%... It's one thing to have rich people who invets but quite another to have them playin' "hide-the-dough"... If that is allowed to continue then at some point any responsible government has no choice but to get those dollars back into circulation, even if it means doing it with some tax penalties on those who are stashing it... I mean, just printing up more money to replace the money that is out of circulation isn't a realistic long term policy... No, the capitalists are gonna have to get back in the "capitalist game" and quit playing "keep away" 'cause "keep away" isn't capitalism, it's capital hoarding... There's a big difference...

Bobert...as I am tird of repeating, the deregulation of the banking system was a device to promote growth in the economy in the absense of any other "growth provider"...manufacturing and export having been largely abandoned due to our uncompetitive status.

De regulation created a classic Capitalist "bubble", now the bubble has burst and the jar of soapy water is empty....we have nothing left to play with!

This situation would appertain no matter which party was in government.
To say Obama could go further with regulation of the banking system is simply wrong, the Capitalist system is based on the use and manipulation of money, that must continue under any shade of government....IF we want the system to continue.

Additionally, capitalist "democracy" requires ever increasing amounts of revenue just to stay in the same place.
Marx warned of this situation many years ago.....The contradictions of Capitalism......we should have put our house in order long before now, but selfishness and greed are strong motivators for a weak species....Ake

Well, Amos, Skinner wasn't all wrong... Beneath our complex (at least compared to rats) there are some more primitive aspects to our behaviors... One thing that Skinner observed in rats that I think is also found in man is that the closer one is to reward the more "excitement" there is to our behavior... I mean, at a very basic level, from sex to winning a game, I think that is true... That does make some human behaviors similar to that of rats... With that said, I think the human behavior kinda takes a nose-dive from there and the rats behavior makes alot more sense... Take George Bush, fir instance...

Think I'll just leave it right there... *grin*...

Of course money is scarse, but the government are determined not to alter the system if it kills us. They would rather lower living standards with all the suffering that will involve.

That may be well and good if the system could really be repaired, but our system is in decline, there is nothing left with which to save ourselves.

The time is right for change, if we dont do it now, our rights of free speech and protest will be swiftly eroded under the old cold war guise of "National Security"

Bobert...I dont think you understand.
The Uk Banking and financial sector has collapsed through greed and encouragement in deregulation from a Labour govt.
The Liberal Democrats had positioned themselves to the left of Labour on many issues before the last election, but when the election result was inconclusive, the Liberals could not wait to join the Conservatives in a coalition government. To get this chance, they were prepared to jettison all their progressive policies and act as mercenaries for the conservatives.

The motivation for this behaviour is, that they claim that the financial meltdown which was created by capitalist government, means that money is not available to carry out these progressive policies.
Not only is the money to improve the lot of the poor "not available",
but they also intend to sqeeze the shit out of poor people to re-set the system, while replacing our nuclear capability costing hundreds of billions.

The only thing which is of any importance to Capitalist politicians is the survival of the Capitalist system....end of story.

Just as a bookmark, the position of the UK Liberal Democrats BEFORE the last election, was miles to the left of US Democrats. None of the democratic liberal parties can be trusted, and democratic liberal, refers to parties of the right, left and centre.

God! you guys are not still on about "our side can deliver a better society" crap.

What is wrong with you? The system determines what sort of society we have, not the political parties!

Cant you read or understand what has just happened? the Capitalist financial system has collapsed and will keep collapsing until we become competitive again.
The system is no longer able to keep the population in a living standard which is acceptable.
We are about to be squeezed until the pips squeak,we will lose all sorts of freedoms and rights as people begin to realise what is actually happening to them and start to protest; and these protests will be violent, many will lose their lives, many will starve.

Dont allow that suffering to be in vain, please understand who the enemy is. Deep in your hearts many of you already know, but are unwilling to desert your long held beliefs. You have been told for so long that the opposing political party is the enemy....classic divide and conquer....but the enemy are those who pull the financial strings, they are apolitical, using left and right to play and win the long game.

In my lifetime, I have had to reassess my political ideas, right back to the bone. My left wing Utopia, a cherished goal as a young..and not so young man, I now realise is unattainable, given the present learned behaviour of humanity.

It will take generations to construct a workable and sustainable society.....but I have certainly realised that to have any chance of persuading others to lead a sustainable lifestyle, we have first to banish the Capitalist financial/social system to the dustbin of history.
That can never be achieved, while we tear ourselves to pieces over Party Politics. .....Ake.

Good article, Amos...

Seems that the Repubs have set out to put down several markers that really aren't based on reality...

First, the demonization of labor unions... Reality is that it was the labor movement that brought about the middle class... Reality, part B, is that Repub think tanks and Boss Hog's PR companies have spent alot of effort to kill off unions and they have done a very good job... This goes back to the early 80's when Ronnie "Never-met-a-scab-I-didn't-like" Reagan fired the air traffic controllers... Since then not only union membership has been in decline but also the standard of living for the average American worker...

Second, and connected to what I have just said, is the demonization of public employees... Yes, if you'd buy into the Repub/Boss Hog PR that is coming at US fast and furious, public employees are a bunch of free-loaders... This is not based on any reality as public employees have traditionally earned less then those in the private sector and, other than anecdotal stories, keep this country running...

Third, the Repubs are trying to not have a conversation that deals with both sides of the income/expense of the deficit... They are hellbent on the middle class giving 100% and their rich donors nothing... That has always been the New Deal haters goal... They would love nuthin' more than a return to the sweat shop/ child labor days... These goals have now been passed down from generation to generation...

Lastly (at least for now) is Boss Hog's PR push to have folks parrot this "both sides are the same argument" that GfinS has learned all to chords to... This is all more Repub PR/BS... They don't want the peons to know that there are now major differences between the two camps because that would mean that having to take in alternative policy proposals... And the Repubs don't want that... All they want is more capitulation from Obama and the Dems until they have the last of the New Deal run thru the shreader...

Well, that's it fir now except...

If you listen to the recent speeches of Republican presidential hopefuls, youÕll find several of them talking at length about the harm done by unionized government workers, who have, they say, multiplied under the Obama administration. A recent example was an op-ed article by the outgoing Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty, who declared that Òthanks to President Obama,Ó government is the only booming sector in our economy: ÒSince January 2008Ó Ñ silly me, I thought Mr. Obama wasnÕt inaugurated until 2009 Ñ Òthe private sector has lost nearly eight million jobs, while local, state and federal governments added 590,000.Ó

Horrors! Except that according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, government employment has fallen, not risen, since January 2008. And since January 2009, when Mr. Obama actually did take office, government employment has fallen by more than 300,000 as hard-pressed state and local governments have been forced to lay off teachers, police officers, firefighters and other workers.

So how did the notion of a surge in government payrolls under Mr. Obama take hold?

It turns out that last spring there was, in fact, a bulge in government employment. And both politicians and researchers at humbug factories Ñ I mean, conservative think tanks Ñ quickly seized on this bulge as evidence of an exploding public sector. Over the summer, articles and speeches began to appear highlighting the rise in government employment and issuing dire warnings about what it portended for AmericaÕs future.

But anyone paying attention knew why public employment had risen Ñ and it had nothing to do with Big Government. It was, instead, the fact that the federal government had to hire a lot of temporary workers to carry out the 2010 Census Ñ workers who have almost all left the payroll now that the Census is done.

Is it really possible that the authors of those articles and speeches about soaring public employment didnÕt know what was going on? Well, I guess we should never assume malice when ignorance remains a possibility.

There has not, however, been any visible effort to retract those erroneous claims. And this isnÕt the only case of a claimed huge expansion in government that turns out to be nothing of the kind. Have you heard the one about how thereÕs been an explosion in the number of federal regulators? Mike Konczal of the Roosevelt Institute looked into the numbers behind that claim, and it turns out that almost all of those additional ÒregulatorsÓ work for the Department of Homeland Security, protecting us against terrorists.

Still, why does it matter what some politicians and think tanks say? The answer is that thereÕs a well-developed right-wing media infrastructure in place to catapult the propaganda, as former President George W. Bush put it, to rapidly disseminate bogus analysis to a wide audience where it becomes part of what Òeveryone knows.Ó (ThereÕs nothing comparable on the left, which has fallen far behind in the humbug race.)

And itÕs a very effective process. When discussing the alleged huge expansion of government under Mr. Obama, IÕve repeatedly found that people just wonÕt believe me when I try to point out that it never happened. They assume that IÕm lying, or somehow cherry-picking the data. After all, theyÕve heard over and over again about that surge in government spending and employment, and they donÕt realize that everything theyÕve heard was a special delivery from the Humbug Express.

So in this holiday season, letÕs remember the wisdom of Ebenezer Scrooge. Not the bit about denying food and medical care to those who need them: AmericaÕs failure to take care of its own less-fortunate citizens is a national disgrace. But Scrooge was right about the prevalence of humbug. And weÕd be much better off as a nation if more people had the courage to say ÒBah!Ó (NYT article "The Humbug Express"

At least kendall has the reasoning to look at the broader picture.
Why is it that those who identify with the liberal left, resort to hysterical name calling, and stuffing words into people's mouths, that they then start blathering an argument with????....???

....answer: To get away from having to bring ANY FACTS or truth to the discussion!...and that's because, their mindset is comprised of opinions based on an ideological notion, of a premise, than anything solid to stand on!!

The evidence is overwhelmingly abundant!

leys stop pulling punches about republicans. these people are a ok with assinaqtion of foreign world leaders for just helping their own people. robertsoon and chavez(chaves has mostly just taken over his oil revenv=ues and given the benefits to the people rather than to american corporations and their allies).

or under regan they supported rio mont and his genocidal murder of a quarter of a million mayan natives in guatemala. they have enured themselves from and decency in thr name of delusional ideal and are destroying any hope of democracy in north america as well as much of the world.

yes we have the spin off in our present conservative government. they were heavily finded by us corporaqtions whem organozing their " reform party" and follow the corporate line. one of their ideallogical leaders tom flannigan called for the assination of julian assuange. they have abondoned democracy and believe in corporate rule. unfortunalely that rule has caused the derugulation driven collapse of the economy and is destroying the enviornment.

its almost too late==maybe it is already too late. the seas wll likelybe dead in a decade and the sustainability of highr life will be gone within fifty years except in small pockets. in addition the dereg insanity caused the chicago merchantile exchange scandal(rip off is more like it) the keating bank scandals and now the great weath thrft by wall street and bailed out by the taxpayer.

That is exactly the point, Capt'n...

Reality is that most folks are hurtin'... I live in one of the poorest counties in Virginia and I see it every time I leave this farm...

And here's one of the dumbest ideas that has come outta the r4ight winged noise machine... Up the retirement age to 68??? How many folks, even in their late 50s, have tried to get a job??? Those jobs aren't out there... And the lucky few that do get jobs are taking jobs that pay, you guessed it, minimum wage... I see older people pushing shoppin' carts, workin' check out lines, putting up stock... And all for minimum wage, if they are one of the lucky ones to get one of those jobs....

This is terribly irresponsible on our society's part and tragic in that we really don't give a flyin' fig for the well being of our elderly neighbors...

That is the conversation we should be having...

Not BS conversations about cutting, cutting and more cutting... This nation can afford to do better...

What are they calling it but inflation?

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

It's even beyond a promise... It's good policy, too... With the working classes wages stagnant for the last 35 years while prices has risen the reality is that folks are either going to need some help in their old age or we are going to have to be the only civilized country that allows our elderly to slip into deep poverty... This is a human rights issue...

(But, Boberdz... That what retirement accounts are for...)

Yes, they are and that;s fine fir the folks who make a decent living... Come to the South where we have "Right-to-Work" (Section 14b of the Taft-Hartley Act) and you have middle aged people working for minimum wage, which BTW is less (indexed) that it was 40 years ago... The Repub answer is "personal responsibility"... In other words, it is their fault... Problem with this broad stroke explanation is that their donors aren't creating good paying jobs... You can't blame that on the working class...

So reality is t5hat we have millions of people living paycheck to paycheck who literally can't afford retirement accounts!!!

This is reality... No "personal responsibility" BS can change that...

So we are back to Social Security... Entitlement??? Promise??? Moral obligation??? A human right??? Yeah, kinda all of the above... Does it need fixing??? To some extent, yeah, but taking money oput of it right now (as the so-called tax compromise does) is like putting a leech on a sick man...

But the progressives can't seem to get their thoughts thru the right-winged noise machine to get even these simple thoughts into the conversation... And the people who will be hurt the most when Social Security is recrafted by Boss Hog & Co. are the very same people who are voting for the crooks who are eat up to do just that???

By the time that Tea Party Nation figures out this pea-under-the-shell game they will have lost it all... Very stupid people... No, just make that very uninformed people...

Yes. When you call someone an idiot or an asshole it really weakens your argument, and it can only have one result...another insult, and the whole thing devolves into a pissing contest. If you have a reasonably good command of the language you don't need to resort to insults to get your point across.
If you feel that you must use a baseball bat to get their attention, maybe it's your message that's at fault? Ever considered the possibility that you might be wrong?

Well, GfinS, just who is it that you say you are sandwiched between???

I'm talkin' real world here and you keep moving the goal posts around... Make up yer mind... You get all huffy about being stuck between factions and when I point out that it ain't Dems v. Repub, 'er left v. right you get all high-horsey and start SCREAMING a bunch of weird stuff that cannot possibly be grounded in any real thought process???

I mean, reality is that, yeah, politics suck... Especially when one side can write and/or rewrite the rules as they go along... That's exactly what we have here and that is a good reason why the only conversations that are taking place are on the right side of the divide...

The left hasn't had the microphone since the 60s... And the folks who were holding it were conveniently (for the right) killed off one by one...

That is the issue here... The country is sinking fast and seems that rather than try to fix it to compete the folks who have brainwashed you don't want any input from the left or the educated...

No, it's emotionalism and nationalism... But no intelligent policy... Just policies that make Boss Hog more $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$...

Check it out... That's the real deal here...

What about my above post don't you understand(or CAN'T understand?).

FUCK POLITICS!!! It has RIPPED OFF everyone at every turn...including YOU!!!

What left can you be talkin' about, GfinS??? The left hasn't had so much as a wiff of real media time compared to the right... The middle you are stuck between is the right and the far right... The right being the corporate media (CBS, NBC and ABC) and the far right being FOX... Those are the BIG 4 and none of them has any interest in the left... I know... I am a leftest and my people don't get any BIG MEDIA time...

(But. Boberdz... The Dems are all leftest, aren't they???)

No, they most definitely are NOT...

BTW, ya'll when was the last time ya'll saw Dennis Kucinich on any of the BIG 4??? And until Bernie Saunders did his 9 hour mini-filibuster last week when did he get any BIG 4 time???

Ya' see, this idea that people are stuck between two opposite polls is nuthin' but garbage out... That is exactly what Boss Hog wants you to think because he is slowly moving the conversation further and further right while the "left" is completely left out of the discussion so that there will no one with any microphone accessibility as Boss Hog dismantles the4 New Deal...

Think not??? Think again...

Kendall: "They are all tarred with the same brush. We have to decide which gang of liars and thieves will do the least damage."

WE DO????????? Why?? So we can be just a 'little fucked up' instead of totally fucked up???!!??

When people hear the truth..and they KNOW that they just heard the truth..have you ever noticed that it takes the form of REMEMBERING???
Where do we 'remember' it from?? Maybe, certain things we already know to be true..BUT, we, as writers, DON'T write of create from there...Then we get all pissy that there is no truth out there!!..THIS IS ASININE!

WE ARE IT!!!..but there crippling political notions out there, that get some of our best creative thinkers, to get LAZY, and expect to be 'entertained' instead of CREATING!..and to accommodate that, some elect to compromise, and therefore create mediocrity!

Don't let other people's problems be an anchor to YOUR mediocrity!!!
If you want to be different, BE EXCELLENT!

kendall, OK, gotcha..what is going to happen, I believe, is that the left and the right are going to push an agenda, to their respected 'devotees'..each side different aspects from the other, on why, for this reason or that, communications, whether it be internet, what we hear on radio, T.V., etc. will be 'monitored' or censored, 'regulated' for reasons (bogus reasons) for 'national security'...citing various excuses, like Assange,(Wikileaks), identity theft, and political 'stirrings up'. You will hear one side or the other(or both), dropping hints about 'Federally licensed airwaves', and who should be allowed to do what on them...even threatening to not renew licenses, etc, etc., for various reasons. This is a scam and a sham! They will WANT the public to demand or 'welcome' 'regulations' and 'security'...so, the media will dutifully run stories, and more of them, to create the unrest and demand...(You know, like advertising for any product..'Be the first on your block, to get hip'....Blah blah blah) Its all BULLSHIT!
The American public, deserve to have the TRUTH reported, AND different HONEST views..and let them (US) decide.
This stuff about being programmed, 'What to think, or feel' about this or that is absolute bullshit..AND MIND CONTROL!!......and you thought it was merely 'political differences'!..Their playing both sides against the middle, and coming up with 'solutions' that were solely for the benefit of them...NOT US!!!....AND is what they wanted all along!!
Example: The 'Patriot Act' was written, with MUCH of BIDEN'S input...in the 90's..BEFORE 9-11!! BIDEN????....Yeppers!..check it out, yourself!...and you thought it was Bush, and the 'far right'??

Take a look at these two bills up now,..the omnibus and Bush's tax cuts...Do you think they just 'came up' with a couple more THOUSAND pages, this week, alone??????
Now the two will 'compromise'(bullshitting again), to pass all this shit, or try, without DUE PROCESS of the supreme law of the land, the Constitution, and the order that it specifies, as far as appropriating money.....ITS ALL BEING CIRCUMNAVIGATED BY BOTH SIDES!!!!....but packaged to look like a 'cool deal'!

....And NONE OF IT IS!!
OK??

A lot of you have guitars, and sing..some write..all you need, is to get clear, and when you hit that place of clarity, everything you write about, will open up, and that is where your best creativity flows....When you can touch the HUMANITY we ALL hold in common, rather than talkin' about the crap, that you've bought into, through the years! (Don't feel bad, though....they've been workin' overtime to sell it to you!)

When you can reach someone's heart and soul, in your music, then you've arrived, at becoming what music is capable of doing...that perhaps you've always wanted..but never quite got to.....Whatcha' waitin' for??

Highest Regards to those Who 'Got It',
Warmest Regards, for Those Who Don't,

Kendall, If you are now just getting to this, (your first post), then you got A LOT of catching up to do..(I had no idea)....and I keep telling you all, that it's both sides working AGAINST the middle. This should be obvious, as the Bush tax thing is going on, loaded with tons of earmarks, and bills that the Democrat Senate couldn't even get out of 'Committee' for a vote, in the Senate!..Another ridiculous piece of crap, is the omnibus bill, 'to keep the government running'..What a crock of shit, that got tacked onto that..INCLUDING the 'Food safety bill', sponsored by Monsanto'..(which somebody else posted stuff about last week or two!
We're getting bushwhacked from BOTH sides...only the simple minded partisan politicos either don't see it, or won't admit it!
There's a lot of shit that they are going to 'compromise their way through', that IS NOT in ANY of OUR best interests!...and its coming from BOTH sides..and they are using unconstitutional trickery to foist it upon us!
Check it out, yourselves!

Jeez, am I blue in the face yet?.....(and still they don't listen!)

Good points, Strings...

It is, after all, about how stuff gets framed and the Repubs have outspent and out-disciplined the Dems when it comes to PR and messaging...

What is infuriating is that every time I hear a Dem operative they admit this yet aren't capable of breaking the culture that has set into the Democratic Party...

I mean, the Repubs indignantly complain about the tax-and-spend Democrats and they rail against "earmarks" but when it comes time to markin' up a spending bill they act like a pack of wolves trying to get their pet projects in the bill... I mean, look at the spending bill that the Senate passed last night... Mitch McConnell, who regularly complains about earmarks, got $650,000 for a study on "genetic technology" for the University of Kentucky... What makes this "double hypocrisy" is that the Repubs are on record of being against that sort of stuff to begin with... I mean, we ain't gonna have no stem cell research but 650 grand for "genetic technology" is okee dokee???

Thanks Kendall and A.

George Lakoff suggests we clean up our language and tell these reactionary Republicans what we really want for our country.

He suggests we get rid of "no" in our vocabulary because it just reinforces the ideas that we protest by a kind of acceptance that they actually have value.

Instead, for example, of "anti-war", we should say "pro-peace". Turn the negatives into positives.

We can say, however, that the bailouts given the "banksters" are the great American heist as Robert Scheer has pointed out. We can say the the Capitulator-in-Chief may have sold out the important social safety nets for our country. We can say that the
Senators and House have been brainwashed by Republicanism and have been hypnotized by the Republican Rumor Mill. We can say that the big bosses in Corporate America now are running our country and are robbing the taxpayer. We can say that America is playing Big Daddy by beating countries with a wartime stick.

These points are called "reframing" and should be part of our dialogue, the kind of marketing techniques that the Republican think tanks have been employing over the last few decades. It still remains that we may speak of aid to the poor through strong protective regulation by our government: from Libertarians, Right-wingers, Corporate crooks and Uniformed war-mongers, and give Americans their jobs back through industry and employ them to fix infrastructure, give workers strong unions and reclaim the New Deal.

"The Banks are made of marble, with a guard at every door and the vaults are stuffed with silver that the worker sweated for".

We can "reframe" and raise our voices by rejecting the language of Republicans and replacing it with terms that reflect our own values.

"Back again, back again, we need Franklyn Delano Roosevelt back again".

Maybe Bernie Sanders is our new Ferdinand Pecora.

Don't accept the language of the Republicans. It is false.

Using reverse accusative psychology, the Republicans attempt to smear Dems with the same actions they use, such as: accusing Obama as being dictatorial when they themselves want absolute dictatorial control, accusing Dems of robbing citizens of jobs when their record has been anti-job creation for decades, demonizing net neutrality as a gov. plot so they can control it with their propaganda, using civil rights techniques to bomb abortion clinics, claiming that their Second Amendment rights make them the victims instead of the perpetrators of weapon-related violence in the U.S., using language such as "Fair and Balanced", "Death Taxes", "Class War" and other nonsense to promote their idiot-oligies.

Dems would do well to take over the language. "Banksters", "Robber Barons", "War mongers", "Capitulators", etc.

Better yet, the Republican rumor mill can be deposed by Dems offering what they do stand for: better housing fairness, nipping Wall Street robbery in the bud, decent public schools, a meaningful public option in health care, a shut-down of Obama's wars, jobs for infrastructure financed by the government, protection of Social Security, "rights" not "entitlements", fair tax laws and more and more regulations that have real teeth not being gutted by Republicans (The Greedy Old Party) and selfish Democrats, a fair energy policy, holding the WTO, NAFTA, and the World Bank to fair practices for indigent people around the world and a clear and sensible foreign policy building schools, hospitals, infrastructure instead of guns, bombs and bullying.
