My favourite a capella group for madrigals might take a bit of digging up:

High Soprano - Minnie Ripperton
Soprano - Nellie Melba
Alto - Mama Cass Elliott
Tenor - Undecided, but let's say Enrico Caruso
Baritone - Peter Dawson
Bass - Paul Robeson

Regards, John

D'OH!

Yaaa! Dick Gaughan... ya... I can't believe I forgot him... definatly on vocals... but I'm keeping the guitar in Don's big ole hands...

;-)

But Ian Anderson is good for more than just leaping and cavorting... he's one of the worlds best flute players (floutist? sp?) and has won more flute awards than he can count...

Oh ya.. I wanna add my good friend Len Wallace 'cause he's the only guy who can play accordion in such a way that I don't hate it... If ya ever get a chance to see him, ask him to play "Taking Care Of Business"!! And let him know that I put ya up to it!! He'll play it and hate ya forever!! LOL!!! Seriously, Len is wonderful on so many levels...

And he's not even paying me to say this stuff!! LOL!!

;-)

I'll take the Mama's, the Papa's, Jim Kweskin on backup, Janis Joplin on lead vocal, with Catspaw49 writing the lyrics...and fiddling with the players.

I'm surprised that Woody Guthrie hasn't been mentioned here.

I'd have to include the Ralph Stanley in any group that requires harmony.

How about Levon Helm and the late Rick Danko?

Peg,

Great call on Ian Anderson, finest leaper and cavorter I've ever seen. Also the most spellbinding performer.

gol-leee!!!..I now see WHY "de gustibus" is "non-disputandum"!!....guess I'm too old, but the only one of those groups I even consider walking across the street for is kendall's!...(If Loreena McKinnit is singing, I'll walk around the block to avoid it..*grin*)....but, it takes all kinds, I guess. And there so MANY kinds of groups..Celtic, Old-Timey, Bluegrass...let me think..It would be interesting to take Aly Bain, Alistair Anderson and Martin Carthy, and see what developed....then Norman Blake, Vassar Clements, Joe Maphis and Tut Taylor...awww..this is too HARD!

Oh Jaysus, there are so many to choose from, I don't even know where to start!

Oh yes, I do! I'd start Mick McGoldrick on flute, whistles and uilleann pipes, then I'd have to get Niamh Parsons and Sean Keane to do the vocals, Alasdair Frazer on fiddle, Gino Lupari - bodhràn -what else?, Jim Rainey would do the guitar and bouzouki stuff, and finally Mairtin O'Connor on the squeeze-box. Dinkey, huh? I can't wait for the first CD.

Ummmm...

Neat question...

On Fiddle Oliver Schroer 'cause he's the best, he's not hampered by being strictly traditional, and he's not a pedophile

On Accoustic Guitar Don Ross 'cause he's also the best!

Flute, Volcals and Songwriting... Ummm... Ian Anderson knowing full well that 1)He'd never do it and 2)he really should be included if something like this happened...

Vocals and Harp The Lady Herself Ohhhh Loreena... Mmmmmm... HuH!?! What ?!?! Sorry... But I think her and Ian should have worked together a long time ago.. they could mix thier eastern influenced stuff...

I'll likley add to this list as the coffee sinks in, but that's where I'm gonna start...

Bob Roberts Master of the last trading Thames barge Cambria. Aye Skipjack, the very same man. I once had the pleasure of being introduced to him. And I have always enjoyed the Copper family too. They are from the same area my mothers family are from in Sussex. Yours,Aye. Dave

Well, I suppose I ought to suggest mine (all UK): Lonnie Donegan on rhythm guitar and lead vocals, Dave Pegg on bass, Ian Wheeler or Paul Jones on harmonica, Tony Davis on kazoo & 5-string banjo, the late Beryl Bryden on washboard & vocals, Jim Douglas on guitar and tenor banjo, Joe Brown on lead guitar, melodeon, ukelele & mandolin, guest fiddling from Dave Swarbrick, guest vocals on Caribbean songs from Cliff Hall.
Repertoire a nice mix of skiffle, folk, blues, a little jazz & maybe even 50's R&R.

Really? I can't get my hands on the 3rd album, so I haven't heard them without Roy Boy--in fact their albums are out of stock everywhere, but thanks to the library, I got the debut album. Personally, my favorites are the Jeff Lynne/George Harrison songs. I'm headin' for the light.

Dave, is your Bob Roberts the erstwhile master of the Cambria? I have been reading Des Sleightholme in Classic Boat (superb publication), who tells some smashing Bob Roberts stories.

If you could put together a line up of 5 or 6 folk singers/players present or past to form a super duper group, who would be in it?
I am still arguing with myself as to who I would choose, but I will make a decision and get back to you
kindest regards
Patrish
