Subject: RE: Unsung contemporary performers From: Ebbie Date: 13 May 04 - 02:32 AM I heard at music tonight- it's official: Buddy Tabor has been invited to perform at Folsom Prison! He's thrilled. I've forgotten the date but it will be in early October when he'll be 'down south' anyway. At the Alaska Folk Festival this spring some inmates heard his set and got hold of some of his CDs and clamored for a performance. Buddy is especially thrilled about it because Johnny Cash played there. My guess is that he will find the 'clanging doors' overwhelming but the experience should bring forth some new songs. |
Subject: RE: Unsung contemporary performers From: Ebbie Date: 12 May 04 - 06:41 PM efolkMusic.org http://www.efolkmusic.org/ArtMusic/ViewArtist.asp?Artist=Buddy+Tabor&AID=211 Quote: "About the artist: With the release of "Writing on Stone", 20-year Alaskan singer-songwriter Buddy Tabor is creating new fields from old soil. "Buddy Tabor is a player and a poet," said the late Townes Van Zandt, for whom Tabor opened during one stop of the legendary artist's 1994 Alaskan tour. Writing On Stone is Tabor's second CD, but his fifth recording release. The album includes 15 original songs, Including I Never Prayed for Elvis, Stories Made of Beauty, New Fallen Snow (lament for Townes Van Zandt), Songs of Joy and Sorrow and Moment of Conception." Buddy's songs are wonderfully crafted and some of them, I think, will become classics. Some old ones, among many, are 'Mr. Basketball Shoes" and "Cowboy in a Wheelchair". Some of the new ones:"Jesus Loves Me (more than he loves you); "Canyon de Chelly"; "Wild Horses"; "A Man Called Rush"- lots more. He is prolific. Not nearly all of Buddy's songs and CDs are listed on the efolk site. If you are interested, PM me and I'll put you in touch. |

Subject: RE: Unsung contemporary performers From: The Borchester Echo Date: 12 May 04 - 04:57 PM If you don't want Jim Moray talked about, why mention him? Obviously he's getting media coverage at present as a single "Sprig of Thyme" was released yesterday and a nationwide tour in support of Richard Thompson begins at the weekend. I happen to think J Mo, Damo and PM are all excellent (but not at all unknown). However, you may not know much about Mawkin yet, or The Gloworms , but you will. |
Subject: Unsung contemporary performers From: Ed. Date: 12 May 04 - 04:38 PM Of course this is entirely subjective, but I do wonder why (the a bit rubbish) Jim Moray gets decent media coverage, whilst far superior artists such as Damien Barber and Pete Morton are virtually ignored. I don't wish to start another Jim Moray thread, click here for that. I'm interested to know what music you think is great, that most of us don't know? Links to sites with audio files would be appreciated. Ed |
