I heard Peter Gabriel did a surprise appearance at his memorial cconcert on Friday at the Queens Hall, Edinburgh.

I remember seeing him at a festival a few years ago.

Absolutely tremendous. Played every instrument himself and played them all superbly.

How very sad that he has died so young but his music will never die.

He was the inspiration for a whole crop of innovative young Scottish bands and I feel sure his music will still be played for a very long time to come.

Have just caught up with Mudcat again after a few days so late in posting.
Although I'd been aware of his long battle with the illness, I too was shocked and yes, truly devastated at the news.

Martyn's Grit is one of THE outstanding albums of our time.
It's musically and creatively brilliant; brave, honest, and often downright scary. The mind boggles to contemplate what else he might have gone on to produce, but that will have to stand as his memorial. And the rest of his legacy's pretty amazing too.

Sincerest condolencies to Margaret and his family. RIP Martyn.

I too think Bothy Culture was one of the most brilliant pieces of Scots/fusion I've every heard.

There will be a service at Salen Church on the Isle of Mull this Saturday at 11.30 followed by a wake at Dervaig Hall.

Calmac are running an extra ferry to Mull on Saturday leaving Oban at 10am with a ferry back at 5. Reservations can be made on 01680 812343.

Sad news today. Martin Bennet passed away yesterday after a long battle with Hodgkinsons Lymphoma. I'm absolutely gutted, as I'm sure many more of you will be. He was 29 years old, and arguably the most inspired figure in new scottish music.

How sad! I never met him, just his mother once, when she mentioned his illness, keeping a brave face. Not hearing anything else for a couple of years I hoped he was on the way back to health. Condolences to Margaret and his other family.

Just terrible news. I only just started listening to his music, though I know his mother, Margaret's, singing well. As adied in the wool traditionalist, i just loved his music for it's inventiveness and sensitivity. His poor family: I heard one of his pieces on the radio to announce the news and I was devastated, I can't begin to think how they must feel. The only thing I can quote is the title of the music I heard... "Why?"
