Subject: Mavis Staples - We'll Never Turn Back From: Jeri Date: 18 Jun 07 - 08:33 PM Here's some information on this new CD There's an interview with song clips. WUMB (Boston) has been playing cuts from this, and it sounds like one amazing recording. 60s freedom songs for now, because the journey isn't over yet. I'm going to find the CD and buy it, but in the meantime, has anyone heard the whole thing? Comments? |
Subject: RE: Mavis Staples - We'll Never Turn Back From: Azizi Date: 18 Jun 07 - 09:54 PM From that linked website: Track listing: 1. "Down In Mississippi" (JB Lenoir) 2. "Eyes On The Prize" (Traditional) 3. "We Shall Not Be Moved" (Traditional) 4. "In The Mississippi River" (Marshall Jones) 5. "On My Way" (Traditional) 6. "This Little Light" (Traditional w/ lyrics & arr. by Ry Cooder) 7. "99 And A Half" (Traditional w/ lyrics & arr. by Ry Cooder) 8. "My Own Eyes" (Mavis Staples, Ry Cooder) 9. "Turn Me Around" (Traditional) 10. "We'll Never Turn Back" (Bertha Gober) 11. "I'll Be Rested" (Ry Cooder) 12. "Jesus Is On The Main Line" (Traditional) -snip- It sounds like a GREAT CD {though I can't get the actual interview and sound clip to work}. I particularly love the song "Jesus Is on The Mainline." I remember hearing this song when I was a child. I didn't know then that they were talking about a telephone line. I thought Jesus was walking on the main railroad line... This is definitely a CD worth purchasing. |

Subject: RE: Mavis Staples - We'll Never Turn Back From: Wesley S Date: 19 Jun 07 - 11:58 AM A friend of mine - Buddy - plays guitar for John Mayall. They were on the same bill as Mavis not too long ago. Buddy says she's really hot right now - and that her live shows are not to be missed. |
Subject: RE: Mavis Staples - We'll Never Turn Back From: Wesley S Date: 25 Jun 07 - 11:28 AM I picked up the CD over the weekend and I love everything I've heard so far. The producer is Ry Cooder - so there is some great guitar work to be heard. Highly recommended. |
Subject: RE: Mavis Staples - We'll Never Turn Back From: C. Ham Date: 25 Jun 07 - 03:19 PM I've been following Mavis Staple's work since her days with The Staples Singers and I think this is an inspired, and inspiring, album. In my opinion, it's almost the best album she's ever done. The only one I like even more is "Spirituals & Gospel," the duo album she made a few years back with Lucky Peterson. |
