Subject: Origins: The Other Side. Who is Bill Dorsey? From: Joybell Date: 06 Jul 07 - 07:40 PM I'd like to find out more about the songwriter who wrote "THE OTHER SIDE" (The Icecaps are Melting) It's on Tiny Tim's "God Bless Tiny Tim -1968" The liner notes credit "a young songwriter" and give his name as Bill Dorsey. The arrangement, which is probably equally important with this song, is by an Artie Butler. Google hasn't helped much. I did find a Bill Dorsey but he seems an unlikely candidate, and the song is not mentioned in connection with him. Does anyone know anything about the man who wrote this song? I'd be very grateful. Subject: RE: Origins: The Other Side. Who is Bill Dorsey? From: Joybell Date: 06 Jul 07 - 07:46 PM Found Artie Butler alright. Still working as a song arranger. There's a picture of him with his arms around Barry Manilow. Highly respected with important songs to his credits. No mention of Bill Dorsey that I've found yet. Cheers, Joy |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE OTHER SIDE (Bill Dorsey/Tiny Tim) From: Joybell Date: 07 Jul 07 - 04:18 AM Yes Joe, OK. The lyrics come from the album. We had to play it and get them that way. No sign of them anywhere else. (mad laughter) Oh! (bass ostinato) One eye is brown. The other is brown. I am a fish. I swim around. You say I'm lost. I disagree. The map has changed, and with it, me. Flying through the seaweed, what strange things I see below. Cars are waiting, windshields wiping, nowhere left to go. Ooh! The icecaps are melting, oh, oh, oh, oh! All the world is drowning, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh! The icecaps are melting. The tide is rushing in. All the world is drowning, to wash away the sin. (instrumental break) The seagull flies in search of land. The children hide beneath the sand. As golden toys come floating down. I play the fish. I swim around. (spoken) Now, everybody sing! I tell you, my dear friends, oh, how wonderful it is, no matter wherever you are, we can all be happy singing, no matter if you're out there parked in that car along the highway, or whether you're at home, sitting by the radio, or whether you're having a meal, or whether you're by the TV set, let everyone sing about the melting icecaps, how they're coming down into the sea, and let us all have a swimming time, as we sing.... (chorus with orchestra, fade out) by Bill Dorsey arr: Artie Butler Wonderful aren't they. It's wild and very cheery-sounding. If you can get to hear it I recommend it. Cheers, Joy |

Subject: RE: Origins: The Other Side (Bill Dorsey) From: GUEST,MagicManky Date: 18 Jul 10 - 09:21 AM I was looking for info on a set of Monkees bootlegs and found this thread. There are a number of demo recordings made by Bill Dorsey for the Monkees, including one credited as either 'I Am A Fish' or 'I Swim Around', but it has the exact lyrics above so it's actually 'The Other Side'. You can find these demos on some bootleg discs, sometimes listed as 'The Peter Tork Acetates' (they were discovered in his former home), but the quality is poor. Some of Dorsey's songs were recorded for the '33 1/3 Revolutions Per monkee' TV special in 1969, including 'Wind Up Man', 'A String For My Kite' and 'Goldilocks Sometime'. |
