Hi all been reading a few threads after a break from the Cat.
And seems a bit contentious in places.
So maybe there is one subject that we could all par take in without errr disagreeing.
What did you listen to last night?
I listened to my Mrs playing her low d and other whistles as we practiced a tune we have come up with.
I enjoyed that very much.

Good idea for a thread. I listened to "The Lighthouse" (R. Hinson & G. West) and "Precious Lord Take My Hand"(Thomas A. Dorsey) in preparation for singing them with friends in church. I awoke with "Take My Hand" running in my head. Hmmm. That'd be nice on my low D, too!

Various hits by Meatloaf, Buddy Holly, Dylan, Flanders and Swann, Thin Lizzy, Kirsty McColl, Marc Cohn, Rod Shearman, Jake Thackray, Manfred Mann, Alison Kraus, Cream, Whitesnake and the Silly Sisters - I love driving with my iPod in the car!

I rarely sit and listen to a whole album by a single artist at once - I find they mostly get a bit 'samey' and I get bored. I have eclectic tastes and my iPod/MP3 selection certainly illustrates this. It's only recently I took the Brahms and Mozart selection off. There's some Handel to go on it next.

Friday night, not last night - but here's a cut-and-paste of my post to flatpick-l from Saturday morning:

Saw George Jones and band at the Vermont State Fair (Rutland) last night. Pam Tillis opened. Big crowd. A significant fraction of Rutland County, and people from as far away as Montreal.

In brief, George is beginning to slow down, and letting his band members do more of the hard work. But he's still got the essentials. He still has all the note bends that nobody could get away with and get back where he should be by the end of the line...does with melody what Clarence did with time.

He has a fiddler, a telecaster player, and a chick singer, any of which would have been worth going to see in their own right, and his band is VERY tight. They all seemed to be actually enjoying themselves. I suspect, if this crowd was typical, knowing the ticket prices, they were doing a lot better for themselves than they could as soloists, even given their abilities, and they know it.

I didn't get into Pam Tillis's set very well. The volume was set too loud in general, and the instrument volumes overpowered the vocals. I guess that's the way the "hot new country" fans like it. But I like to hear the songs, not just a wall of noise. Normally, I'd be aware that what old f....old folks like has no economic significance; but this crowd had a majority of old folks. So you'd think she would have adapted. Oh, well. The good news was that _her_ tele player was incredible. I just ignored her and listened to him. I didn't get his name, but she introduced him as a grandson of Hank Snow. That made sense.

After nearly 50 years of playing acoustic guitar and sneering at electrics, I want a telecaster. Have since I saw Bill Kirchen a year or two ago. But I'm probably too old to learn to do anything with it, and I'd need a band. Ah, well, none of us can have it all, and I've had more than most.

Jim Moray - "Sweet England".

Sheer genius.

I am well pleased at the way the "Scene" is evolving, with the likes of Eliza C and her musician mates ; Bellowhead, and Mr Moray, making music which raises the hair on the back of my neck, and sets the blood racing.

I am minded of the mid to late 1960s, when the three chord wonders in denim caps, with their own 'songs', songs written on sh*tpaper in the interval, started infesting the folk clubs.

I damn near went back to playing rock 'n' roll. You couldn't breathe for pseudo-American accents and then the Watersons and Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick came to show us (me) the way.

Some might not like the way the "Scene" is evolving, but it is, I think, ineluctable. Perhaps we are now beginning to recover from the damage inflicted on the Revival by the likes of Mr McColl.

Then my beloved and I listened to a compilation disc by Maddy Prior - 'Hind Horn' ; 'Sheath and Knife' ; - sheer genius.

The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band

Since having the pleasure of being entertained by Washboard Breezy and the good Rev. at the Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival in August, there hasn't been a day or night that's gone by that I haven't listened to their CD, Big Damn Nation.

I don't think I have been that obsessive about a group since I was a kid. Described as Robert Johnson on crack, perhaps this makes me a crack addict. Not a duff cut on the whole CD. I just love them!

I was listening to Lowlands by Jean Redpath and Abby Newton and fine it is too!

However,I want to defend "Mr McColl from the base charge by Bryn Pugh that he damaged the folk revival.What absurd tosh!
Ewan McColl was a towering figure in the folk world as a writer,collector and singer of traditional material.He also encouraged young and talented singers and musicians around him.The Radio Ballads were landmark recordings and many of his own songs have passed into the tradition.I am thinking of such songs as Dirty Old Town ,the Manchester Rambler and The Terror Time.

I saw Karen Tweed (who did a Dipper tune) with Roger Wilson and they were fab.
They began with John Kirkpatrick's Seven Up and because it's such a good tune, did it as an encore.
A fine old custom worth reviving.

Listened to myself playing the harmonica, just got a new set of Suzuki's and was trying them out. Afterward, I went for a drive and put on a new CD that I jsut purchased and new nothing about, but it sounded interesting. "Mr Peters", an accordian player/singer from Belize. WOW!!. There's no point in trying to describe it, but if you like traditional Caribbean music, this guy is a must for your collection.

Not last night but Sunday night I went to see Queensryche, Alice Cooper and Heaven and Hell (which is bascially Black Sabbath with Ronnie James Dio singing). It was AWESOME. Obviously a far stretch from folk but I have loved Alice Cooper since I was about 6 years old and he was on the Muppet Show. I've seen him live 3 times now and he puts on a hell of a show every time.

Last night I recovered. :-)

I listened to Pint and Dale, live in our front room. After completing Great Yarmouth Maritime festival I invited the crew of the Grand Turk across for dinner and William and Felicia, who were staying with us, offered to play a little music.

It was the cherry on the top of a wonderful festival and, as the Turk may be sold this year, it was a fine ending to the festival and what may be Turk's last visit to Yarmouth.

I listened to my daughter, she wasn't singing or anything. She has just split up from her boyfriend - (unnecessary detail)
Spent the rest of the evening quietly rejoicing at the thought of a new Chris Wood solo album as announced on the English Acoustic Collective website.

Monday night went to the amazingly popular Royal&Derngate to watch the recording /touring "Sorry I haven't a Clue" team. Very funny - (unnecessary detail).

Trubrit - Bill Wyman, Andy Fairweather-Lowe, Albert Lee, Geraint Evans, a couple of amazing horn players, one of who was in danger of a rupture playing the soprano sax, not to mention Georgie Fame on keyboards - awesome.

And, yes, the Manfreds include Mike d'Abo, Paul Jones who last time didn't seem to have aged a day from the 60s, shite on him !! :-); and various Manfred Menn whose names I can't recall.

Mind you, at my age that ain't a surprise.

Last night we listened to Leigh Stirling's 'Standing in the Wings', and Bellowhead 'Burlesque'. That'll be played through before long - even the grandbrats aged 7 and 4 love it.

A lot of early Bob Dylan; they re-played the Scorcese movie on PBS last night. Even after all this time, his music still resonates.
Lay Down Your Weary Tune closed the program; a lovely and under played song.

The 'listen to rock 'n roll hormones' have recently kicked in with my 13 1/2 year old son. He will spend his entire evening (if I will let him)searching iTunes for music to download onto his iPod. I have felt very priviledged the last few evenings that he has invited me to sit with him and listen to many of his selections. He has chosen a whole bunch of decent to really good classic rock from the 60's and 70's - so I've been listening to the likes of the Allman Brothers, Lynard Skynard, Jefferson Airplane, the Stones, ACDC. And he is introducing me to newer stuff - Weird Al whasisname, Green Day, Cake, some ready-for-prime-time rap. Also, the complete soundtrack to Monty Python's Spamalot, which he finds absolutely hilarious, Red Hot Chili Peppers (boy, they sure don't sound like they did when they were local boys playing around Chapel Hill and Carrboro) and orchestral music from the soundtracks to the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Star War movies. Plus a bit of stringband music from the Bing Brothers.

I've noticed him checking out Dylan, but he hasn't aquired a taste for him, and otherwise has little affinity for folk or trad. other than some stringband music (but only the instrumentals.) He shushes me when I sing around him. "You've got such a good voice, Mom, but I can't stand those songs you sing. They're all so stupid." And I still have not been entirely forgiven for accidentally causing some field recordings of a capella hymns and work songs to be downloaded onto his iPod. He has absolutely no tolerance or appreciation for a capella music of any type.

All-in-all, though, not bad selections at all for a 13 year old kid who can not carry a tune in a bucket.

Listening with him is a blast from the past for me, as well as an introduction to newer popular music.

I too listened to Rachel Unthank's album "Cruel Sister" after all of the good reviews I've read and ended up wondering if there was something wrong with my ears. I've heard some poor albums in my time but this beat them all. They must either have a very good PR person behind them or there really is something wrong with my hearing. "The Bairns" would have to be a lot better for me to spend my money on it.

A freebie, thanks to a local music store owner, also a client, who was one of the sponsors and got a block of tickets.

Not exactly my thing - his music lacks structure to me.

But his instrumental technique - incredible.

A group of Cornish fiddlers, the youngest being about 6 years old, Dalla with friends, various folkies singing The wedding Song,[Come Write Me Down], Ellie, a stunningly good hammered dulcimer palyer and two superb fiddlers [one of which flew down from Newcastle where he has just started the folk Music degree]and all to celebrate the wedding of Karensa Newman [used to be Karensa Wragg]to Derek Wright. The setting? Overlooking Perranporth beach. Couldn't have been better.

My wife got on this kick where she must have played several dozen versions of the same song, Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" by different singers on Youtube. Everything from the obvious (Rufus Wainwright) to
the obscure (a bunch of a capela singers in an elvator). The absolute best cover of this song ever was Four Norwegian Guys. Thats how they were billed. A beautiful rendition of a beautiful song.

That is interesting NeilD as my youngest one is compiling a MySpace or similar devoted all the different versions of that great song. His favourite is Jeff Buckley while mine is by the writer himself. Actually I nearly sang it last night at my clubs singaround but we only got round the room once in three hours.

       I also love the Jeff Buckley version of "Hallelujah". My wife and I had a friendly disagreement over Jeff Buckley vs. Rufus Wainwright going until we found the one by these four Norwegian guys.
It's just these four guys sitting around a studio with simple acoustic guitar accompaniment by one of the four, but they all have excellent and unique voices. They each take one verse and sound great but when they combine harmony on the chorus it is divine.
