Just recieved my copy in the post today! It's a lovely album, a mixture of traditional songs and Barbara Dicksons own songs. Her voice is alot more mellow now than in her earlier days. Easy listening and highly recommended!

.....but who else around here is old enough to remember Barbara in Bitter Withy? A superb trio, crowned by Barbara's voice of course, and what a song to name yourselves after.

Hi Colin

Bitter Withy were Andy Ramage, Tich Frier and Lesley Hale. To the best of my knowledge Barbara was never a member. She was a member for a while of The Great Fife Roadshow.

Could it be that she stood in for Lesley on one occasion or more? My memory insists that I saw her in the trio in folk clubs in the North East. Her own site talks of her singing alongside them which doesn't really help, or even supports Eddie's recollection rather than mine, but I have asked someone who is or was acting for Barbara if he can clear it up.

Thread drift... but Lesley still sings at Newtongrange Folk Club, South of Edinburgh most Wednesdays (where my twin sister sings too). It's thanks to Lesley that I started singing out in folk clubs.

I stand corrected by the lady herself. Barbara's swift response confirms that my memory has been playing tricks.

To quote: "No, I was never in Bitter Withy. I can't remember the woman's name who was....the boys were Tich Frier and Andy Ramage!"

But I am not mistaken in remembering Barbara's visits to the folk clubs of south-west Durham. Apologies for the error - and to Lesley Hale.

My wife, Alison Chapman McLean, took many photos of the Bitter Withy back in the early seventies, I think it was. If anybody would like a jpg, just email me with an address and I'll forward them. By the way, Lesley was on the Mudcat site some time ago. I asked her if she wanted the master tape of the LP we made and I duly sent it off after she gave me her address. I heard no more but I'm assuming she got it.

This is a really stunning album - Barbara Dickson at her very best. I think 'Dream Angus' is the highlight for me but 'The Lowlands of Holland' 'Rigs o Rye' and 'Witch of the Westmerlands' are fantastic. The voice is cool and mellow and Troy Donockleys production compliments it perfectly.

Fantastic to see Barbara buzzing with creativity. She sings traditional music with such glorious empathy and passion and she does more than most to use her mainstream appeal to promote folk music. Her concert sets of the past few years have been mainly folk music - and her audiences seem to love it. She has a concert DVD - Into the Light - out soon featuring tracks from Time and Tide and the previous offering, Full Circle. As ever she's supported by some really fine players including Troy Doncockley and Peter Zorn.

Voiceprint have released the album and the DVD. The album - already in the top 40 indie chart - is on sale virtually everywhere.
Dickson - who has just started a national tour - is also headlining the Stonehaven Folk Festival in July this year .

Already booked my B & B for Stonehaven festival: go regularly,but they've got a tremendous line-up this year including BD.
Lesley still attends Newtongrange Folk club weekly, and performs with a number of other people, including Charlie Milne. They both write great songs, and she is most generous to folk who want arrangements, accompaniments, chords for songs, lessons, etc. Recently retired from her day job. I believe she spent some years in Australia too in between times.
