Apparently tonight sees Humph saying farewell to his Radio 2 programme, The Best Of Jazz: but never fear, he's still chairing I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue. What a star! He deserves a big thank you for what he's given to music & broadcasting.

We saw him with his jazz band in Exeter a couple of weeks ago (and I hate jazz!) - we had a lovely, warm-hearted sort of evening, and he gave his fans all the time in the world in the foyer during the interval and at the end. A national treasure I'd say, to coin a cliché.

Steve, and I listened to him and his band in Hamburg, 1958!
That's 50 years ago now, and I have had the same feelings in 1958 you have had today. What a great artist!

Manfred

And he finished off with an old George Lewis recording of Climax Rag !

He was so funny too, with exquisite comic timing, just as you'd expect. He told a joke he said he'd nicked from Barry Cryer:

Two blokes were having a natter and one said to the other, "Have you ever shoed a horse?"

T'other said, "No, but I once told a pig to piss off."
