Subject: Swinton Secret Festival From: Dave the Gnome Date: 03 Oct 09 - 11:01 AM This may sound realy weird but I think there is a festival this year. Think? Yes - I don't really know. I beleive it to be on Saturday October 24th and I understand that there is an evening concert with Gary and Vera Aspey and Geoff Higginbottom. I assume the big sing and play is on all day in the bar but, again, I am just guessing. If I am right it will be at the White Lion, Swinton. Manchester. Maybe I am wrong to post here. maybe we should keep it a secret. After all, it is the punters who give us most hastle... :D (eG) |
Subject: RE: Swinton Secret Festival From: Les in Chorlton Date: 03 Oct 09 - 02:07 PM Mmmmmmmmmmmm, I think you might be right. I have been trying to keep our Singaround, First and Third Wednesdays at The Beech, Chorlton a secret also. I think it builds tension and mystery and helps us to achieve cult status. You may have more trouble than we do keeping it a secret! Cheers L in C |
Subject: RE: Swinton Secret Festival From: Bernard Date: 03 Oct 09 - 03:40 PM According to the website there just may be one in 2008...! If you've any information, lettuce snow for Oldham Community Radio... Erm, Les, you sure that's 'cult'?! |

Subject: RE: Swinton Secret Festival From: Dave the Gnome Date: 05 Oct 09 - 01:57 PM Remember the secret entrance to the Ceilidh last year, Greg? Well, we decided it wasn't secret enough so we are not having a ceilidh at all this year! |

Subject: RE: Swinton Secret Festival From: Joan from Wigan Date: 08 Oct 09 - 02:42 PM Is it okay to secretly refresh this again? (looking around furtively to make sure no one's looking or listening...) |
Subject: RE: Swinton Secret Festival From: Dave the Gnome Date: 08 Oct 09 - 03:28 PM It is, Joan. Be seeing you there as usual? Or is that a secret as well? I believe the secret concert also involes the not so secret Stanley Accrington. But no-one will ever know... DeG |

Subject: RE: Swinton Secret Festival From: Bernard Date: 10 Oct 09 - 02:52 PM How illuminating! |
Subject: RE: Swinton Secret Festival From: Dave the Gnome Date: 14 Oct 09 - 10:56 AM The concert with Gary and Vera Aspey and Geoff Higginbottom was so secret that Geoff did not know about it and accepted another booking - Not his fault I hasten to add and he will be there for the afternoon session. A suitable substitute has been found in the person of Stanley Accrington (anag. Can't act, yel nor sing) There is also a top secret blues concert on Friday the 23rd with anyone who is anyone in the murky world of Salford blues:-) But their names are being kept secret to protect the guilty. Coupled with the clandestine recovery workshop on Sunday afternoon it promises to be a spledid if rather covert weekend... I may or may not post further details as they are now watching me... DeG |
Subject: RE: Swinton Secret Festival From: Les in Chorlton Date: 14 Oct 09 - 11:25 AM S o are we ............... |
Subject: RE: Swinton Secret Festival From: Pistachio Date: 15 Oct 09 - 10:56 AM Sounds interesting.. but can't possibly go if it's a secret - hope the veil of mystery doesn't keep others away from Swinton, Stoke, Salford and Blackpool!! (or did I just get my cobwebs crossed!) Ooohh H. |
Subject: RE: Swinton Secret Festival From: Bernard Date: 15 Oct 09 - 01:59 PM It should be pointed out that Swinton is the capital of Salford...!! |
Subject: RE: Swinton Secret Festival From: Dave the Gnome Date: 20 Oct 09 - 06:35 AM I thought 'S' was the capital of Salford. Ah Well... I have broken the code! Following a courageous raid last night in which 6 pints of Guinness lost their lives I now have all the information I need to give you the full truth. On Friday the 23 October at around 8:30 there is to be a Singaround somewhere in the White Lion - Now, we can honestly say that it has not yet been decided in which room because it depends on the next item, but running favourite is the bar. This event is free of charge. Also on Friday the 23rd at 8:30 pm is Dai's Blues Night. An acoustic blues extravaganza with Hellhound Rex and Hootowl Robin (The Devil's menagery - guitar/harp duo from Lancaster and the Lakes), Gary Atkinson and Friends (Superb dirty down-home Blues on shiny guitars!), The Chilly Pills (Jugs, Ukes and Washboards, Hokum and Good-time Blues from Charlie and Rosemary) , Steve Woolley (Master of the Mississippi growl), Pete Ryder (Back to his ragtime roots for our Salford guitar-slinging singer-songwriter hero), Dai Thomas (Just too much Blues and maybe too many instruments from your genial MC) and a cameo guest appearance by 'Barrelhouse' Barbera Thomas. Tickets for this event are £5 including raffle and it will be in either the club room or the upstairs room. On Saturday the 24 October starting at 12 noon and going on until the last person falls over is a singaround/playaround/jam and anything session in the bar. This event is free but your liver may pay dearly. Hosted by Phil Atkinson and friends of Swinton Folk Club including Geoff Higginbottom. Saturday 24 October. 8:30pm Upstairs room. Concert with Gary and Vera and Stanley Accrington. Following Dai's wonderful descriptions and comments for the blues night I was very tempted to do a pen sketch of the folk concert artists. But I couldn't be arsed... Admission £6. Sunday 25 October. From lunchtime-ish till tea-time-ish. Yes we can be vague if you like... Survivors workshop. Probably in the bar, unless we get thrown into the club room... Free. There you have it. Gird your loins and come along. We don't bite. Often. DeG |
Subject: RE: Swinton Secret Festival From: Dave the Gnome Date: 20 Oct 09 - 10:25 AM Forgot to say. As an added bonus our hosts, Dan and Sonya, have laid on a barrel of Robinson's seasonal brew, the aptly Haloweenal Wags to Witches. With 4% ABV it is not as heavy as some of the offerings from the Stockport brewery and promises to be a good session beer. Get yourselves outside some! DeG |
Subject: RE: Swinton Secret Festival From: Dave the Gnome Date: 21 Oct 09 - 05:06 AM I believe there may be some secret food on as well but I don't really know. I don't do solids. :D (eG) |

Subject: RE: Swinton Secret Festival From: Dave the Gnome Date: 23 Oct 09 - 11:31 AM I have often heard that Bernard was not all there but I didn't know he ws entirely missing. Hope it is not true on the Day, B! :D (eG) |
Subject: RE: Swinton Secret Festival From: folk1e Date: 23 Oct 09 - 11:55 AM I will be calling in to the White Lion on Saturday ....... just for a quiet beer (or 3). I will try (fairly hard) to not fall over too much or to sing both loudly and out of tune, but I can't promise too much! See you all there! |
Subject: RE: Swinton Secret Festival From: Dave the Gnome Date: 24 Oct 09 - 06:19 AM Well, it's started. I believe the blues concert went well. The sing/play around certainly did. But don't tell anyone... D |
Subject: RE: Swinton Secret Festival From: Dave the Gnome Date: 25 Oct 09 - 03:22 PM I think it might have finished, but what do I kmow? DeG |
Subject: RE: Swinton Secret Festival From: Dave the Gnome Date: 26 Oct 09 - 08:59 AM Yep - That's it. Definitely over. Woke up this morning with a vague feeling that something had gone on so I guess something secret must have happened. I am under strict instructions not to let anyone anyone know the whereabouts of Pip Radish and Gedi so I will not. But there were a couple of renditions of well know ballads (or is it bad salads?) on Saturday and plenty of pink melodeon playing on Sunday. (I thought I said a red carnation not a pink melodeon but never mind!) Anyone who did not get enough of Phil Atkinson over the weekend will be pleased to hear he is on at the club tonight. Cheers DeG |
Subject: RE: Swinton Secret Festival From: Gedi Date: 26 Oct 09 - 09:24 AM Well I tried to remain incognito but my cover was blown - it could have been the melodeon that gave it away! cheers Ged |
Subject: RE: Swinton Secret Festival From: GUEST,Count J Date: 02 Nov 09 - 09:20 AM Is it not on again next year? Is there a Singers Night tonight? What was Billy Joe MacAllister throwing off the Tallahatchie Bridge? Anyone there....? |
Subject: RE: Swinton Secret Festival From: Les in Chorlton Date: 02 Nov 09 - 10:15 AM Could it have been Gedi's melodeon? L in C |
