The Captain of the Cornelia Marie died as a result of a stroke. The Discovery Channel has documented the captain and his crew as they fight the elements to bring home the crabs, The Deadliest Catch.

Ah, sure.... I remember watching him chain smoke, even after being in the hospital. No one can say he wasn't his own man.

Bill - you make me think of The Lockkeeper. Didn't you ever once wish you could be on one of those boats just for a day mid-winter hauling in crabs?

I once wished I had the stamina and daring to go NEAR one of those boats.

Why, when I was young, I wanted to climb mountains...hang by my eyeteeth & crampons from shelves and cornices. We Kansas boys didn't get much chance.

I was only ever in a bad one once. 6 hours laying off Alma, New Brunswick in a 26 footer in ten foot seas and driving rain. Which is nothing compared to what them lads go through.

Women too. I will probably see some at Fisher Poets on the 26th. I am sure that Phil will be remembered there. Crab fishing is the most dangerous fishery out here and they come so close to shore..and of course Alaska is a whole other story...mg

i watched this just the other day and dreamed of butter and lemon as they pulled up the "crab pot"

I saw him when he first suffered a clot in his lung and nearly died.
His mom also died of a stroke. His sons should not be too eager to try their hand in the captains chair.
Phil was likeable because he was honest about fear and the danger he was facing every day.

I saw the Cornelia Marie last October, just before they left Dutch Harbor for the first day of crab season. I've been on it and most of the other boats featured on "Deadliest Catch" and I've certified the commercial scales that weigh all their crab. The crews on these boats are mostly crazy, but incredibly hard working. Captain Phil will be missed by everybody that knew him.

Those guys really earn their bread. Commercial fishing is the most dangerous job on the planet.

I'll tell yo this much, the Davis strait in the dead of winter is no tea party either. Especially in a number 9 sea!

You're right Kendall. I came across from Akutan to Dutch Harbor in a commercial pollack boat last fall in 30 foot seas and 60 knot winds. Southwest Alaska is a very wild place. All us land lubbers kept our barf bags close at hand.

LOL Mary. Trust me, one time on 30 foot seas is enough. It leaves a lasting memory. Tawmmie is fine, she's been dyeing her hair blue and green and red and she's thinking of getting another tattoo. Lori is still in Boston and still single. My other kids are in Indiana, Michigan, Colorado and Florida. We've got only 77 days left until retirement then we get to move down south and I change my name to Florida Mike. Hope you are well and happy. See you at the Getaway.
