Subject: BS: Speaking French in US From: bradfordian Date: 31 Jan 12 - 09:47 AM SACRE BLEU! Struggling US presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich has taken a shot from a Gallic angle at Republican front runner Mitt Romney, accusing him of speaking French. In an attack advertisement released as he battles to turn the tide ahead of the South Carolina primary, the former US House speaker compares Romney to John Kerry, the Democrat skewered by similar claims in a run for the White House in 2004. Je ne comprend pas! |

Subject: RE: BS: Speaking French in US From: ChanteyLass Date: 31 Jan 12 - 10:30 AM Perhaps only in America, or at least here in the USA, would speaking another language in addition to English be considered a political handicap by one's opponents and many voters. I imagine that in most countries it would be considered normal or an asset. |
Subject: RE: BS: Speaking French in US From: GUEST,999 Date: 31 Jan 12 - 10:43 AM The LDS church sends an elder and a newbie together on missions. The elder may be just a year or two older. They go out to sell the faith. I expect that if Mitt's mission was to France, he'd have had time to acquire the language. That type of remark is typical of the crap Republicans do in political campaigns; they even do it to each other. Certainly not their finest hour. And that's precisely why they will not form the government until at least 2020, at which time they may interpret the numbers as a sign from the heavens telling them to take a good look at themselves, hindsight being what it is. |

Listen to [Read] this incredible recording of a speech made by JFK before the American Newspaper Publishers Association. He asked the medias to alert the american mass public about the secret societies that are the real power in military and global affairs. Retranscription below from the JFK Library: The very word "secrecy" is repugnant in a free and open society; and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths and to secret proceedings. We decided long ago that the dangers of excessive and unwarranted concealment of pertinent facts far outweighed the dangers which are cited to justify it. Even today, there is little value in opposing the threat of a closed society by imitating its arbitrary restrictions. Even today, there is little value in insuring the survival of our nation if our traditions do not survive with it. And there is very grave danger that an announced need for increased security will be seized upon by those anxious to expand its meaning to the very limits of official censorship and concealment. That I do not intend to permit to the extent that it is in my control. And no official of my Administration, whether his rank is high or low, civilian or military, should interpret my words here tonight as an excuse to censor the news, to stifle dissent, to cover up our mistakes or to withhold from the press and the public the facts they deserve to know. ################################ The rest of that speech is worth reading and easily available on the www. |

Subject: RE: BS: Speaking French in US From: Charmion Date: 01 Feb 12 - 08:48 AM No Canadian politician hopeful of leading a federal party can get away without at least showing willing in the other official language. It's a measure of Stephen Harper's determination that, over some 10 years in federal politics, he has learned to speak serviceable French despite his deep disapproval of the outsize importance of language in our domestic power struggles. This sideswipe at Mr Romney is rooted in grassroots suspicion of politicians who are a little too obvious in their sophistication and worldliness. Who knows what elitist nonsense a candidate who speaks French is capable of? |

Subject: RE: BS: Speaking French in US From: Bill D Date: 01 Feb 12 - 12:05 PM Oh, I get US politics.... when almost everyone is allowed to vote and get involved, there are crazy people who see opportunities. It's the price we pay for various 'freedoms'. I just find it UNreal that any "American" would be so stunned as to think negatively of such and equally as shocked that Newt would actually believe that this would not be a negative for him. Is he really that stunned as me arse? Running for president of the US and he's a complete idiot? WTF? Again, I didn't need to say any of that. Newt doesn't have the smarts of a newt. He's proven it. Subject: RE: BS: Speaking French in US From: Jim Dixon Date: 01 Feb 12 - 08:34 PM Some TV show yesterday—was it Jon Stewart?—pointed out that some sharp-eyed researcher looked up Newt's doctoral thesis and found that its bibliography included many books written in French--which implies that he can read French, n'est-ce pas? Or else he lied by listing the books in the bibliography. Actually, it's probably true that he can read French. His thesis was on Belgian policy in the Congo, a topic that couldn't be researched properly without reading French. (I don't know whether Flemish would also be relevant.) You can see Newt's thesis here. |
