there are a number of people mentioned by NPR whose music I was familiar with but whose death notices I had missed, for example Papa Wemba and Guy Clarke

they appear to have missed Oscar Brand, who passed on at the age of 96 on September 30, and Pete Zorn (ex-Steeleye Span, ex- Albion Band, ex-Richard Thompson, among others) on April 19, at 65.

Oscar Brand! Right! LOVED his work!

I think I had heard of Zorn, but have at least heard of Steeleye Span. And of Steely Dan.

Maybe they didn't consider Oscar Brand as a musician, but more as a radio host like Studs Terkel and Bob Fass.

And I'm sure we know of many friends who were maybe not so high profile who have passed away this year. The list of "Departed Friends" at this year's Scottish Trad Awards was the longest ever: it did include some who were not Scots, but a mix of professionals, amateurs and those who contributed in different ways (other than playing or singing) to the fabulous music world we inhabit.

Sad news about Rick Parfitt. It will probably surprise a few people to find out that I did some roadie work for Rod Argent in my misspent youth, and all the roadies pitched in on a Quo gig when Argent were double heading, so I got to meet the band and had a laugh with them and the roadies. My mate Dave ended up working full time for Argent Stray and occasionally Quo as soundman, and I carried on with my first love of Folksong as you know. It's all the music business and another brother has gone. RIP Rick- he was a top man.

Tthe Stuff NZ news site widened it to "celebrities" in general. Hardly any I've ever heard of, and the only name that growing up in NZ helped me with was Ray Columbus, though I couldn't have told you what he did.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/celebrities/87664559/2016-was-a-brutal-year-for-celebrities--heres-who-we-lost

I have no audio or video recordings of any of the people on either the Stuff list or michaelr's, apart from Ralph Stanley. (Might get some Leonard Cohen and Mode Allison sometime). Though I do have several CDs of Peter Maxwell Davies (d. 14 March), not mentioned by either.

From where I'm sitting it looks more like a cull of the irrelevant than an occasion for paroxysmal grief.

May I also add lovely Frank Murray, a sweet man whose blue blue eyes I remember from too many years ago - he was the manager for Thin Lizzie, the Pogues etc. A darling man who died too soon.

I've seen no mention here of Roy Harris (d. Feb. 9, 2016) - in the UK. Roy was a folk-club founder, song collector, singer and generally all-around good person.

It's hard to overestimate the effect music can have on our genera health. I have played The Dorset Four Hand Reel at thee start of sessions with Ged, Ken, Mike, Rob, Rachel, Howard, Steve, dawn & family and dozens of others and it always brings pleasure.

I guesss it will continue to do so as we drop of the perch - but no rush - dots on the table, steady tempo, much fun. Happy New Year
