Subject: She's the Daughter of Mother Machree From: raredance Date: 17 Feb 00 - 11:35 PM I am looking for recordings of this song. A colleague of mine at work inqired of this song recently. It seems her mother talked of it a number of times, but my friend had no idea what it was like. Her mother died a couple years ago so ther is no asking her for more details. According to my friend her mother was not musical, she didn't play an instrument or read music, so she must have learned it from a recording or the radio (which would likely also have been a recording). After a few misfires and even considering that the song might havwe been "Mountains of Mourne" because it mentions a girl named Mary Machree, I found the song in the Levi sheet music collection and printed a copy of the score. The tune for "She's The Daughter of Mother Machree" was composed by Ernest Ball and published in 1915 by Witmark. Ball also wrote the music for "Mother Machree" in 1910, "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" and a lot of other romantic and patriotic songs in the Tin Pan Alley style. I have found one recording performed by Charles Harrison on a cassette of early 1900's popular music collected from old Victrola recordings. I was hoping to find something a little more recent that might have better sound quality. Maybe somebody has seen it on one of those ubiquitous collections of syrupy "Irish" songs. rich r |

Subject: Lyr Add: SHE'S THE DAUGHTER OF MOTHER MACHREE From: Jim Dixon Date: 06 Jan 11 - 03:49 PM From the sheet music at The Archive of Popular Music at UCLA: SHE'S THE DAUGHTER OF MOTHER MACHREE Words, Jeff T. Nenarb. Music, Ernest R. Ball. New York: M. Witmark & Sons, © 1915. 1. I was dreaming last night In the moon's silv'ry light. In my dreams I was gazing across the blue sea. As she stood on the shore, I could see her once more, And I knew she was waiting for me. CHORUS: She's the fairest of Ireland's fair daughters. She's as sweet as a wild Irish rose. Sure her laughter just ripples like waters, Far away where the Shannon flows. She is just like her mother. I want for no other. She's more than the whole world to me. May the angels above her Protect her and love her. She's the daughter of Mother Machree. 2. What I saw in my dreams Was the truth, so it seems, For I have here a letter that reached me today. Sure it's stained with her tears. I've not seen her in years, But I'm going back home right away. |
